should be around 100mb/s. maybe because its spins at 5400rpm

      • Mine does 95-110MB/s

    • mine went to like 70+ MBps

  • Can anyone suggest a good bargain for Mac storage?

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71396

    Thanks

  • Be a brave ozbee….

Rip open the case and let us know the exact model number and speed.

  • I thought this drive was USB Powered?

    • no its not. its mentioned above many times

      • yer just read sorry, pity :(

Anyone confirm warranty on the box?

        • Box says 3 years.

  • +2

Actually a good start would be if somebody posted the exact model/part number/ etc from the white? panel on the cardboard box. Should be very small numbers- letters.

The white panel should contain good info to help track things.

    • +2

the exact model number is exactly what is on the spec sheet: STAY2000302
and if you google that, sellers have it listed as 7200 rpm

  • +1

just picked one up from Officeworks QV in Melbourne at a price beat - $94.05. Had plenty of stock on the shelves. Made in Thailand Feb 2012.

  • OT: but can anyone recommend a portable (USB powered) equivalent?

  • +2

The OW online price is now $98.

  • Is it better getting this or medion nas 1.5tb for $89 at also?

    • is $89 standard price? Last week, it was $129 at my local one.

      • $89 is clearance price at local aldi, another one is selling it at $99, north Brisbane

  • I mean Aldi, sorry stupid corrective spelling

  • +2

Picked up two from JB at Albert St Brisbane - plenty of stock.

Went to Forest Hill JB and they had loads in stock. One thing though. I noticed a discerpency: Some of them says "Assembled in China" and others are "Assembled in Thailand". Both were manufactured in Thailand. Which ones are the most reliable and/or fastest (7200rpm)?

  • I just bought it from OfficeWorks, the shelf price is $129, scan price is $98. No price match.

  • Went to JB Strathpine. They had a pile of them (about 25) stacked on the floor, in front of one of the laptop displays. They were labelled $139, but they scanned as $99

  • Anyone still got the link for WD Element portable 2GB $9x, that's couple of days ago or even yesterday?

    • 2TB you mean, but that's out of stock. Not to mention loads of people saying the deal's kinda shady.

  • Just bought it from OW online. Thanks

  • Damnit, I knew I'd regret buying my USB3.0 3TB for $170odd last week -_- Great bargain.

    • if you paid by credit card, does it come with a price protection guarantee, or does your place of purchase have one?

  • Just so you know, hard drive supply levels are back to normal, so prices will start to fall soon: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/05/hard-d…

Greed. Like the petrol companies, they are charging more because they can, and people have been used to paying more already. They couldn't charge more before because prices were already set low, and if they raised it themselves it would be suicide (unless they colluded which I'm sure is illegal).

But the flood raised prices for everyone, and it was blank slate. They can now choose not to reduce prices to pocket extra profits. Before, if they wanted more profits they'd have to raise prices which they couldn't do. But since the prices were raised for them, they don't have to, they can just keep them up, and I think they will.

The smaller players selling ext HDDs like Iomega, Toshiba or Verbatim might reduce them but Seagate and WD who don't see them as massive threats will try to hang on to high prices as long as they can.

  • it's 5400rpm confirm by bourke st jb

  • anyone know if this can be separated from the case and use as an internal SATA hard drive for qnap T212?

  • I picked one up at JB Bourke St today. My box says:
    STAY2000302
    DOM: 02/2012
    Assembled in China
    Product of China

As someone had said, google STAY2000302 shows 7200rpm. Either way, I'm happy with the price.

    • Mine was same model and DOM but Thailand. Got it from OW.

I will run the test later to find out for sure if it's 7200 RPM or not.

UPDATE: CrystalDiskInfo says it's a 7200 RPM drive. It's not overly noisy either, and I don't notice any clicking.

Only thing I can hear is the fan which is fairly quiet. The drive can't be heard at all when transferring to it.

  • Went to OW Dandenong this morning and their ticket price was already $98. They've undercut JB already. JB was right next door, and I went into there first but they had no stock, and the ticket price still said $139. OW had plenty of stock, and not only beat their price the moment the store opened and JB's promotion began, they were much more ready.

    So props to Officeworks.

BTW, I used my team member discount to get it for $93.10.

  • Went to OW… All sold out. Ended up going to JB, they literally had like 30 of them on the floor and shelves. Thanks OP.

  • Anyone know if these come with worldwide warranty or just in australia, as will be travelling to europe in a few months for about 3 weeks, so if anything goes wrong, id like to get it replaced there.

Ok little girls - I opened mine up. Here it is:

    http://bit.ly/KWjSgk

Bought a Made & Assembled in China. Does not state what RPM the drive is as you can see.

    • +1

Thank-you big brave boy, coming back to the main question. Can it be used as an internal drive ?

      • +1

Yep. Installed and its currently in use.

Might throw an old shitty 1TB HDD in the shell now.

        • That's exactly what I did, old WD green 1TB in the case and it's working.

    • +1

      thanx katz

I like what the sticker says "Product warranty is void if any seal or label is removed"

LOL you have to rip it out of the enclosure to be able to read the sticker ;)

      • No probs. Was pretty easy to open too.

Interesting how it lacks the RPM on the drive though. I wonder how best to test it?

    • how did you open it? Did you damage the enclosure in the process? Is the enclosure re-usable once opened?

    • What's the hdd connector?

  • -2

katz… give us the PN MODEL, FW and date from the drive part number etc……. cant read it

    tnx

    • +3

the pic is big enough to read.

      PN: 9YN164-570
      FW: CC9C
      Date: 12263

      DOM: 12/2011

      • just wonder, is the PN and SN number on the drive itself the same as the back plate?
mine just seems to be very different from your drive in the picture.

Funny enough, the PN on box is different to the ones on the back plate.

I know every drive is different but there is no resemblance in this at all.

How else can you check the rpm speed without pulling it apart?

  • +1

    Wanted… new readers

  • Looks like its confirmed 7200… bargain

  • How can you tell if you are getting the 7200 rpm or 5900 rpm? Where it is manufactured perhaps?

    • Anything with a DOM 12/2011 or later is 7200RPM.

But 2012 models have newer drives than 2011 models with a different part number (for the drive) which I presume are even better in some way.

A lot of people with 2011 drives have a ST2000DM001 which may be 5900 or 7200, but mine which is DOM 02/2012 is a STAY2000302 and that's a guaranteed 7200.

      • Not so… unfortunately! I just bought the drive from OW in Melbourne and it has the following printed on the box:

        DOM: 04/2012 with STAY2000302 BUT it has a 5900rpm drive - a ST2000DL003 drive inside.

I'm very disappointed as I should have payed the extra $20 to get a 7200rpm drive, which I thought this way.

        Let others beware of this.

      • ST2000DM001 is 7200….

STAY2000302 is the model number for the external drive, that's got nothing to do with the drive inside…

Yes, I was just commenting for others to know what lostn wrote "… STAY2000302 and that's a guaranteed 7200" is not so. ie Others should not to assume that every STAY2000302 has a 7200rpm drive in it, because it doesn't. Mine has a 5200 rpm drive which is very disappointing.

  • tested copying a 7GB file and it's hovering at 85MB/sec. Awesome!!.

  • Internal Seagate 7200 rpm 2TB hard drives seems to be about $120. Probably worth the extra $20 if you are going to use it as your primary hard disk, since you are assured of 7200 rpm speed and a 1 year warranty. Before the floods they were about $90.

    • Better off paying another 20 ontop and getting the Hitachi 7K3000's, 3 years warranty and drives that are much more reliable, and faster as well.

  • +2

Thanks OP for the bargain, bought 2 from JB good to reward the company actually driving the price down rather than the reactionaries!

  • +2

I got mine from Officeworks QV, Melbourne. There were about 80 on the shelves at 19:30 31-05-2012 for $98.
The officeworks ones seem to be made in Thailand

here's some photos of the box and contents http://imgur.com/a/9c5K3

edit: I just used HD Tune to run some tests and check some info, it's reporting the drive with the following, not sure if accurate:
    Firmware version : CC9D
    Standard : ATA8-ACS - SATA III
    Rotation speed : 7200 RPM

    • Unfortunately not. I just bought one from OW Highett VIC and it has a ST2000DL003 drive in it - ie a 5900rpm drive.

Let others know that they are not guaranteed to get a 7200rpm drive!

  • I got one of these drives today
    connected by usb2 i was getting 30MB/s
via usb3 it has settled on 22MB/s

think ill take it out of the case soon…

Edit: out of the case connected by sata2
    getting 90MB/s.

It was bloody hot when i took it out, so lesson to everyone, when doing prolonged writes, make sure the case has airflow over it.

    • Somethings up either with your enclosure or your usb3 chip (most likely poor drivers)Should be maxing out your usb 3.0 easily with these drives, i know i did with my 3tb versions of these.

  • Got one from punchbowl, there were 4 when i went in store, one man came in and bought 2 and i saw one more person grab the last one. I can confirm these ones were all manufactured in 2011 and are from China. Not sure whether i should return it or not after reading about the click of death..

  • For those who experience 'the chirp' with these drives, consider updating the firmware. Most of these drives are made up of 2 x 1gb platters and some do make a noise.
This issue has been discussed on the Seagate forum and is attributed to the Advanced Power Management features of the drive. See this thread:
    http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-Barracud…

Seagate have just brought out a firmware update to correct the issue. See here:
    http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-Barracud…

    Happy 2tb-ing !!

    • What a tool…

Have you tried it yourself… Obviously Not….

Wasted 5 hours backing up my drive.. to another 2Tb…

only to figure out afterwards that the firmware ONLY works for the CC4X (internal drives only)

The external drives CC9x units.. (even if you take them out of the external case)… will not flash up..

The firmware updater checks for the existing firmware on the drive before updating…

      Don't bother wasting your time..

      PS. bought four drives…

The first was faulty out of the box… the second is fine… haven't opening the third and forth units yet..

Havingt said that.. there is literally no difference in the HD tune graphs for the drive via USB3 or hooked up via sata… sustained around 138mb/s backing up a 1TB work of stuff.. attempting the firmware upgrade…

    1. Did the FW upgrade work?

    2. Where is the direct link for the new improved FW? (not some forum with 1000 complaints)

    3. I keep WIndows 7/XP auto update on and only getting 16MB/s on USB 2, and 30MB/s on the USB3 port?? <—- How can I improve this by software?? Is there some better USB drivers??

    cheeeers and lots of Beeeeers

  • Just bought one, and got free delivery, thanks for the deal!.

  • Bought 3 from JB. Assembled and made in Thailand. STAY2000302 can confirm all 7200 rpm. DOM 03/2012

  • Just bought one from Officeworks online, thanks for the deal.

  • Just bought one from OW. Ass in China, Prod of China, DOM 04/2012.

Drive inside is ST2000DM001-9YN164, Firmware Revision: CC9D.

    Confirmed as a 7200RPM drive.

  • Thanks OP! Great find. They were marked as $139 in my local store but when scanned came through at $99

  • Very High temps (57C) getting with these drives - WTF?? My Samsung is only 32C … what are ppls Temps….

    Did the FW upgrade work?

  • Thanks OP! Bought one from Officeworks because JB didn't have any in stock. I have now formatted it to fat32 and it is connected to my TV. Excellent! Now I just have to learn to rip the dvds to it and there will be no more kids scratching the discs!

    Great bargain!

    • Fat32 have a file size limit of 4gb. Don't know if your rips will be small enough. Keep in mind extras, sound and all that kind of stuff are compressed on disc. So a 4gb disc might turn out to be a 6gb rip

  • thanks OP - just bought one from OW at $98 - plenty stock

  • Just grabbed one from JB, and easily opened the case and stuck it in my pc :)

For the record. it is a ST2000DM001 (STAY2000302 with DOM 03/2012).

  • I'm seeing so many conflicting reports as to how to determine which RPM drive you get based on the date of manufacture. In this thread i've seen it stated that anything with a 12.2011 DOM or above are 7200RPM, on another forum I was advised you have to get one dated before 11.2011 to get a 7200RPM drive so who knows? Only way to be sure is to crack it open I guess since Seagate don't state the RPM speed in the specs for the STAY2000302 on their own site :- http://www.seagate.com/au/en/external-hard-drives/desktop-ha…

I purchased one with a 12.2011 DOM (China made & assembled) from OW but they did have 04.2012 DOM (Thailand) ones on the shelf too. Should I have got the latter instead?

Also how easy is it to crack open the case? Will you break the tabs doing it?

    • The case is very easy to crack open, but I did break some of the tabs doing it.

      • Is there any way to determine what drive is inside without cracking it open? As I mentioned the OW store I bought at had 04.2012 ones on the shelf too, don't know if my chances of getting a 7200RPM one would be better with that batch.

        • I couldn't find a way to tell…was just luck that I scored a 7200RPM one.

        • Fair enough. If I did crack open the case would it go back together again and still look like a factory sealed unit? It's more in terms of still being able to use the drive in the external box than trying to return it once cracked open.

        • Yep - I have put an old SATA drive in the case and it shuts ok and looks like "new", and it works fine.

        • I unpacked my drive this afternoon and checked it out with CrystalDiskInfo. The drive reports as a ST2000DM001 with CC9C firmware, a 7200RPM 6Gb/s model. I am a little concerned at a couple of the SMART values it reports though. Displayed in decimal values the Read Error Rate is 1537144 and Seek Error Rate is 2069. These are RAW values so I don't know if I'm reading them right. The Temperature value is an 11 digit number which doesn't seem right. Power On Hours are listed as 0 so it's not somebodies returned unit, it was still completely sealed in the box.
