AppleCare+ Now Includes Unlimited Incidents of Accidental Damage

Received via email:

Your AppleCare+ plan now protects your covered device from unlimited incidents of accidental damage from handling (instead of two incidents every 12 months) while the plan is active and in effect. Each incident is subject to the applicable service fees.
This additional protection comes at no extra charge to you, and you don’t have to do anything.

I mean it should've always been like this, but hey better late than never!

  • Didn’t get the email despite haveing applecare+ monthly

  • Is conventional insurance a better option though? Insurance covers all your devices, even the old ones, and it replaced old devices with new ones instead of just fixing the screen.

    • +1

Problem is your premium keeps going up after claiming (If you're referring to home and contents insurance) where this doesn't occur with AppleCare.

    • Some Amex cards even have damage covers up to $500 for phones. Insurances always going back and forth, they need a diagnostics report in most situations from a repair provider too.

Used to be just two claims per year now it’s unlimited. Pretty cheap insurance around $10-12 per month depending on your device

Android users: Just keep scrolling on pls and go back to your green bubble dilemma.

    • +1

Does it include macbook pro or only mobile/tablets?

      • +1

MacBooks included. Air M2 currently $99/yr or $279/3yr unlimited coverage. Apple going beast mode on 3rd party repairs lol.

        • +1

I'm not an Apple fan, and have always supported 3rd party repair, but gotta say, if you want to beat a competitor, this is the way!

Crazy good value for $279 over 3 years if you take your laptop out of the house / travel / are generally a klutz. Even one minor repair and it's paid for itself easily.

      • Think you will find it was mentioned in the forums. In that case I give credit to Hamboi69

    • +9

I'd feel like I was subsidizing idiots .

And thats before buying AppleCare .

      • +2

That will become even more evident when the price starts creeping up as all the new claims come in

      • That's how a lot of insurance works.

    • +11

      Reported dup (from android)

    • +5

You still gotta pay during repair time ..of course they will take your money Jesus

      • +8

Yes, you need to have something in place at a reasonable price to prevent people just claiming all the time. Not saying the amount is right or wrong, just what it is.

      • +2

i can't imagine them making money on $149 to replace your $2000+ phone…

        • +3

          Or a $6k+ laptop

        • +7

$2000 rrp, $50 in parts + $5 a day in child slave labour from children in Guangdong china.

          • +2

@abjsdhasehasee: Yes 50$ for a mini led display, SSDs etc yes sure!
If you are so concerned about child slave labour I am pretty sure you havent used anything made in china lol

        • You think it's cost apple 2000 ? More like 500 dollars

      • OP is Jesus and advocating AppleCare+ !!! Great marketing Tim

      • I’m trying see why you think this unreasonable.

    • +9

will definitely be dropping the phone off a balcony at month 23 for a replacement device!

      • +3

I guess that will trip the fall sensor and it will call for help.

Why can't Smart Phones deploy parachutes? lol

      • Good idea lol but back it up locally first. :)

      • Don’t you have pay excess to get a new one?

    • +1

I guess this deal won’t be the only thing dropping

    • +13

With regards to the attempted trolling, I'm glad my friends aren't so shallow. :)

      • Cbf

      • Look at me i dropped 2k on a phone. Lol

    • i remember way back when mobile providers provided phone insurance, it was like 15 bucks a month too

    • +3

      Does less.
      Costs more.
      It's that simple.

I had this, sat on my phone accidentally and Apple would not repair it. Apple stated that it wasnt an accidental breakage, cancelled on the spot.

      • +5

It's even worse to hear this when there are people intentionally breaking iphones and Apple employees gladly fix it while laughing at the hilarious way it was destroyed… I guess this is for show.

      • +2

Apple stated that it wasnt an accidental breakage

Why would they think you damaged it deliberately yourself??

      • wow never heard of this, to be honest finding it hard to believe. Is there a communication that clearly shows they declined it? did you try escalating it? what was their reasoning on saying this wasn't accidental damage?

I was thinking of getting the insurance but now second guessing it…

        • +5

I told them the truth, didn’t think there was any need to lie as that’s what happened.

They pointed to the line in the insurance part that said, Apple will repair accidental damage””. They said that I should have known the phone was in my pocket before sitting down, therefore it’s not under Apples accident policy.

I spoke with Manager and tried to escalate it, but was advised the same.

Useless, absolutely useless. Just could not be bothered anymore with Apple. Recycled products sold as new, rubbish accessories like AirPods, over priced, but nothing out there better.

          • +1

@BatmanAU: Damn, thanks for this. Honestly swayed me from getting Apple Care+ for my phone now.

            • +1

@Larsson: I remember reading the terms and even then i thought, well whats accidental, and then the line Apple has the discretion…. Bullocks company

          • @BatmanAU: Can't they claim that "you should have known gravity exists" if you drop your phone too?

      • Why wouldn’t you just say you dropped it?

My mother broke a $1,000 Nokia phone like that back in the day and her insurance replaced it. She broke another one by having it in her pocket and using her hips to close the car door and it was replaced. And broke it a third time, I forget how, and it was replaced too. Some excess each time but a lot cheaper than buying a new top tier Nokia.

The Nokia should have broken your mother's car.

I’d rather this over paying an Optus / telstra based insurance and wait 2 weeks for return

    • +1

No good without the new apple watch, no good if you're dead.

    • +3

This is actually a great alternative to a case & screen protector. Just get AppleCare+, if you break the screen pay $45 for a new one.
Plus when it comes time to sell it, just pay $45 for a new screen and it's basically as good as new.

Having cases are a bit like when you visit your grandma's house and they have plastic on the couch.

      • +2

Except apple care plus doesn’t cover cosmetic damage, so if your screen and phone get scratched and scuffed you’re stuck with it looking like crap…

        • smash the screen then

        • +1

Ah, I wasn't aware. I better tell my colleague to get a case and don't commit insurance fraud.

      • +6

Having cases are a bit like when you visit your grandma's house and they have plastic on the couch.

More like not having a case is a bit like when you're painting without a drop sheet.

        • ?Porque no los dos?

      • +2

This is actually a great alternative to a case & screen protector. Just get AppleCare+, if you break the screen pay $45 for a new one.

Don't forget to count the upfront cost of AppleCare+ which is $239 for the 13 Pro, and probably more for the 14.

If you drop your phone flat on the screen or back and crack the glass, it's $45. If you drop your phone on a corner and the case gets dented which then cracks the screen, that will be $149. Plus the upfront cost.

Cosmetic damage is not covered by AppleCare+.

If you drop your phone and dent the corner or sides but the screen doesn't crack, that is not covered. Dents, paint chips, and scuff marks don't affect the operation of the phone but just looks ugly. It's like how a minor prang in a car park (or someone keying your car all down the sides) makes your car look ugly but everything still works fine.

If you go to a beach and scratch your screen or back with the sand in your pocket, that is not covered.

If you stack your phone together with your friend or partner's phone and the screen gets scratched by the sapphire camera lens cover, that is not covered.

If you wear a diamond ring and scratch your screen or back while handling your phone, that is not covered.

With a case or screen protector, you can just replace it. Without a case you can either live with your phone looking ugly if it gets cosmetic damage or commit fraud and damage your phone on purpose and get it replaced.

Some cases are ugly, some are fine. Some people can't stand the look of any case and that's fine, they just have to be careful with their phone or not mind having possible cosmetic damage.

Plus when it comes time to sell it, just pay $45 for a new screen and it's basically as good as new.

That's assuming the screen is already cracked, and the housing has not been damaged.

And if you haven't made any claims by the time you sell the phone, that's actually $239+$45. You keep forgetting to add the upfront cost of AppleCare+.

        • Would have to think about it more…

Let's use the iPhone 11 Max* as an example.
Say the phone costs AUD $2,500 in Q4 2019.
          After 9-months Q3 2020 and "used" condition it's more like $2,100.
And in it's second year of life (Q2 2021) it is more like $1,600.
When it turns three years old (Q4 2022) it's closer to $900.
And at it's end-life of for the user (Q4 2023) it is $600, and they're looking to upgrade.

If Apple Care+ costs $240 upfront.
And you make 1.5-claims per 12-months, and one extra at the end.
          So we're talking about $50 x7, which is $350 + $240.
Total cost comes to $600 roughly, just to run "naked" without a case.
…i guess it's cheap/worth it if you are in the market for such a device. That must mean you're an OzBargainer who earns +$150k per year.

For the "Median Aussie Consumer" it makes more sense to use a case, which is a low $10-$50 cost, and can be replaced as needed.

And if you think about it, people used to do something similar but simply upgrading their iPhones as soon as they get the new model. But the devices are now holding more and more of their initial value (supply/demand), and the initial price has tripled overall. This means it's not a feasible tactic anymore.
It used to be feasible with Android Phones, but that's also gone the way of the dodo. Perhaps the best value way is now to avoid Apple, and buy a 1.1 years old Android ex-flagship that is Used but in great condition, and then upgrade it every 1.6 years to the next level.
          Example:
          Samsung S7+, Note8, S10+, Note 20 Ultra, S22 Ultra … … …

*I specifically chose that example, as the performance difference is pretty small compared to the latest iPhone 14 Max, but there will be a big difference with the iPhone 15 (A17-Bionic). And the performance metric is important, as that what ultimately dictates how well it can handle updates, and how long it will be supported.

      +1 for the description!

    • Screen protector & case $15 one off cost ,
      sounds cheap to me ,
but then I don't play frisbee with my iPad , so what do I know …

    • +5

Replacements are reconditioned devices, pretty much a Frankenstein's Monster with parts coming from all different places. You'll never get a new device.

    • But who was actually claiming twice a year though?

      • In comparison the claim % to sales is pretty low to the single digits low.

    • I'm amazed at the new "In case of ̶e̶m̶e̶r̶g̶e̶n̶c̶y̶ wanting a new iPhone, break glass" policy.

    • do you have to pay extra for repairs, if not then it is a good deal, if yes then it is what it is(not a good deal for me)

      • There’s always been a claim fee involved, like insurance.

Didn't even know what this was, so sounds like an Apple user problem to me.

    • Yes, got 2 yrs Samsung care free with my s22u. This means that apart from the usual cover i send my handset in in 18 months time and get another new one for $150 if i choose to…….

  • +1

Wow, in time as i am planning to get it for my m1 max 16 inch macbook pro

  • Yeah but you still pay service fee right? Seems like something that should have been available anyway especially if you are paying on top for the repair as well

  • Has anyone actually had any successful claims from this insurance?

    • +1

Yeah, express replacement cover is a guaranteed way to get a new phone. I call apple say my battery doesn’t last as long and without really testing they just sent me a new replacement and released the hold on my credit card

    • Yes I bought Apple care on discount for $150 and my macbook pro 2015 retina died while I was overseas and apple replaced the motherboard for me for free otherwise it was useless. My kids are still using that laptop.

      • How old was the laptop when it died?

        • Around 2 years and 9 months and I was a pro user and used it for learning and doing software development.

          • @randomrandom: Oh, that should be free under ACL anyway since it wasn't that old, but it'd be a challenge if you're overseas so just as well you paid for AppleCare. So in the end you actually paid $150 for that motherboard replacement.

            • @eug: Exactly, still a lot cheaper than a new macbook pro. ACL have 2 years warranty for electronics i believe and in my case it could be a straight decline of the claim

              • +1

                @randomrandom:

ACL have 2 years warranty for electronics i believe and in my case it could be a straight decline of the claim

ACL does not state fixed periods. It says it should last a reasonable amount of time. 2 years and 9 months is definitely not a reasonable amount of time for a very expensive laptop, so you'd have a good case.

    • I took out apple care when I was in the US (no ACL) and made 2 claims in 3 years. Both after I had moved to Australia and it was smooth as everything. I’d highly recommend if we didn’t have ACL. But with it, it felt a bit of a waste. Might be worth if it now covers screen repairs and water damage though.

  • Long live AliExpress

  • Lol at the people that think everyone is goikh to come out in front with this

  • So they're following Samsung care+ now?

Is this another instance of Samsung beating apple to the punch.

If only it included Battery Replacements.
