          • @tulip99: Update: It worked through Paypal Friday afternoon. The max amount for a Woolies giftcard was $260.42 to spend the $250 Vanilla Visa giftcard.

  • +2

If you considered getting the card to top-up Stake, apparently it does not work. Someone commented and I also asked r/ausfinance and someone posted it won't work. For that reason, I'm out…

  • did anyone get flybuy points for purchasing these

    • +1

Yes I did receive Flybuys points for my gift card purchase

      • thanks, I just checked my flybuys again and points have landed (for purchase of vanilla visa cards) after a delay of 24 hours…..However I have not received points for purchasing standard coles myer gc. is that excluded from flybuys

        • +3

You only earn points on 3rd party gift cards. Coles Myer GC is not 3rd party.

  • Can TCN cards be used to buy other gift cards (Apple, Google Play, etc.) in JB Hi-Fi?

    • I would be interested to know that too…..and the other question would be then, do Apple GCs go on sale at JB Hi-Fi?

      • +1

Yes, you can use TCN at JB to buy Apple GCs. Apple GCs don't usually go on sale at JB but they do at Coles/Woolies.

  • Managed to grab 10x$250 at South Morang, and the manager doesnt looked happy when we buy 5 each and we've to justify its paid by different credit card and flybuys and we are not scammers (which is not necessary if you ask me).

    • When..Oh damn i was there earlier and none left

      • +1

we went there yesterday around 5pm.. and there are about 20 x $250 and we took about 10.. so there are definitely some left …
        not sure about today..

Some ideas for liquidating these: council rates, water, gas, electricity, HELP/HECS university debt, tax debt. ATO charges 0.2% on these for tax/HECS/HELP debt but you can only use 5 per day it seems.

    • +6

ATO charges 0.4% on these for tax/HECS/HELP debt, but you can use 5 per day through the ATO portal, and you should be able to use another 5 per day through Government EasyPay.

      • +3

Ahh you are correct I was using the old batch of coles master cards, they are 0.2%. I haven't used these ones yet. Thanks for the tip on Government EasyPay. I am now officially HECS debt free. Lobster and champagne for dinner!

      • Do you know if purchasing these qualifies you for the 'weekly shop 4x$50' or 'spend over $30 in one transaction' type deals? I know it says they don't but you earn flybuys on them for some reason.

        • +1

Purchases of any gift cards at Coles has not triggered any of those kind of bonus points deals within the last few years for me.

    • +2

Using them to buy Woolies giftcards at 4% discount through Woolies mobile site :-) I got an extra $10.42 profit on my $250 Vanilla card doing this.

      • Nice. It would take me a long time to spend $250 at woolies unfortunately.

      • *back, not profit

Too many people here buying more than they otherwise would. Reminds me of the "it's a write-off" joke.

How to move Vanilla Visa balance into a “safer account”.
    1. As provided in beginning of this forum, these cards are prone to BIN attacks.
    2. I have a AusPost Everyday Mastercard which is issued in my name.
    3. I went to post office, builded a friendly rapo with the post office operator lady, said I want to reload my account for $250, before scanning the card, I said to her that my payment card is a signature card, swiped my card, upon asking for PIN, just hit green button, signed the docket, and the funds were instantly available in my AusPost Mastercard. These card dont work without signature for a transaction above $35 or something

    Rinse and Repeat Method example
    1. Purchase 5x $250 Vanilla cards. It costs $1158.75.
    2. Purchase Coles/Myer Card from Liquorland with Vanilla cards (Payments will require signature, so being friendly with Liquorland person may be beneficial). Just say it is signature card.
    3. Maximum limit of Coles Myer Card is $500, so I purchasing 2x $500, 1x 158.75 is perfect I say. Split payment technique worked in Liquorland.
    4. Go back to Coles, purchase 5x $250 Vanilla cards again from an operator using split payment method (without flashing the payment card!)
    5. NOTE: self checkout at coles may not accept “mixed payments” for gift cards, even with Assistance input. For self checkout limit to 2x $250 cards recommended as $500 is max you can buy for Coles/Myer Card.
    6. When you are tired from rinsing and repeating, or when coles is about to run out of stock, combine left over funds ($91.25 from 5x$250 cards) again into Coles Myer card in Liquorland using split payment method
    7. For the last time purchase Vanilla Cards using new Coles/Myer card (obtained by using leftover funds from Vanilla Cards).
    8. These can be used to purchase Ultimate Home cards at woolies. Tried and Tested. No signature required. Hit enter when prompted for a PIN

    • Sounds good, except it seems to require a hell lot of awkward interaction with various checkout operators.

    • +2

      Thanks for sharing.

    • +1

I didnt think the coles myer gift cards allowed you to buy these vanilla cards?

      • They do. I have done it.

      • -1

        yep just confirmed they work

    • -1

Not sure why you've gotten so much slack, you found a way to continue the real deal haha.

I did this for a few today, not really worth the effort anymore but thanks for letting us know

    • without flashing the payment card

You are assuming most operators at Coles are stupid, and won't ask to see payment card when you do split payment.
The moment they get a whiff of you using gift cards to pay for GCs, they will either refuse service or call the duty manager on the radio.

I have seen this happen last week, and the dumb SOB had to be escorted out by the security guard after he kicked up a big fuss.

      • I think it depends on the store. One store I go to they are pretty relaxed about this. I have even used the Coles GC which is printed on paper, and you can clearly see that it's a GC. The operator said it will not work but I got him to try and it did. He let me use several more.

So I could pay Ato with these just before lodging my tax and then claim a tax refund for the full amount? Effectively making free money?

    • Will ato ask for to tax on the undeclared "profit"?

  • +1

Plenty left at ringwood Coles at 12:30pm

  • +1

I'm surprised this isn't a front page deal with 10+ pages of comments like the last few giftcard offers from Coles

    • These deals took a toll on me.

    • because its VIC only :(

  • -2

Someone posted on WeChat and now sold out

    • -1

Isn’t we chat like WhatsApp tho

  • Can you use visa gift cards to pay rent?

  • Just FYI - tried to use the Vanilla Visa Card at KFC self serve kiosk - payment declined. This was at Docklands VIC. Worked at other places so far.

    • +2

just use the KFC app then

  • Anyone if you can add these giftcards to Beem It?

    • Pretty sure you can

      • Have you tried it? I'm looking to pay a large bill hence don't want to buy giftcards for the sake of them not working.

  • So is the tcn gift cards for vic/tas or all states and if so when does it start.

    • -1

For all states. It's already started better to hurry if you planning to buy

      • -1

I will been away I take tomorrow is last day

  • -1

did someone say coles get new stock every day?

  • I have just managed to get a few of the HIM cards. Just checking that there is not explicit activation required for the cards. I am just planning to use the cards in store at JB

    • You do not need to separately activate physical TCN gift cards purchased in person from a brick-and-mortar retailer (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, BIG W, Target). They are usually activated as soon as the transaction has been approved by the gift card issuer at the store, but there may occasionally be delays. You can check whether a physical TCN gift card has been activated by attempting to check its balance on the TCN website; if you can see the balance, it has been activated.

You usually need to separately activate physical TCN gift cards purchased online and then mailed to you (e.g. from the Flybuys rewards store).

      • +1

        Thank you @WookieMonster

  • has anyone used this card to buy the Ultimate cards from Woolworths in the current promotion? Ie. can you use split payment on a variable $500 gift card?

  • (Sorry if this question has been asked before, I am new to this) If I pay the ato using these cards, would it be possible for me to claim the full amount in a future tax return?

    • +1

I mean to ATO it's just a credit card payment for $249 + $1 fee

      • want to overpay the tax first then claim it back. Will that work?

    • You can claim the card fee as a deduction.

      • Not sure about businesses but not deductible for the ordinary worker - https://www.ato.gov.au/law/view/document?src=hs&pit=99991231…

        • +1

not sure want to mingle with ato. Over paying and claim it back…..

        • One could argue that as you are not borrowing money since it is a prepaid card you could claim it. However I wouldn't risk an argument with the ato over it.

  • -1

I've noticed plenty of stock this time around.

    • +1

I noticed $100 more widely available; you'll need to ask at service desk to get $250.

Decided not to overbuy due to hacking issues, have paid up rates and some bills so I'm happy 😃

      • which bills can you pay with this? thanks.

        • +1

i paid all my utility bill and PHI

  • +2

40+ $250 available at McCrae Plaza

  • Curious if anyone knows vanilla cards if the merchant refunds it back automatically will it work

    • +1

It should return to the original payment form if cash refund is agreed. Sometimes i manage to get refund to other card (instore).

    • Yes, it should be fine.

A merchant earlier this year cancelled an online order after taking funds from one of my Vanilla Visa gift cards, and the funds were returned and available onto my Vanilla Visa gift card a few business days later.

If you ever see this card is non-reloadable or words to that effect on a prepaid gift card, it only means that you cannot top up the balance of the prepaid gift card using cash, a bank account or a debit/credit/prepaid card. However, if a merchant opts to refund you, you can still have the funds returned to you card (as long as the card has not been cancelled or has expired). Just don’t get carried away and start processing refunds from merchants onto a prepaid gift card where that prepaid gift card was not used in the original transaction; if you start doing that, I would expect the card issuer to quickly suspend your prepaid gift card due to anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing requirements.

      • +1

Yeah I remember reading on the news that some no name small bank reported a customer to the police for accepting refunds on a card that did not have the original transactions. And it turned out tha guy was doing return fraud with stolen goods.
I always accept refunds on a debit card whenever possible (with big 4s) and never had problems though.

        • -1

How does return fraud even work tho. Are they initially buying the product or do they return using other peoples receipts maybe.

          • @vinnychase: I can't really remember, my guess is they find some abandoned receipts and pick up the item in-store and return it with that found receipt.
