Router Recommendations for nbn FTTP

I'm looking to connect with More telecom soon on the 50/20 plan.

Can someone please suggest a modem router I could use, I've got FTTP if that helps.

1 storey
~190m2
one ethernet wiring in living room
budget ~$300

Thanks

  • Any modem as long as it’s not locked to another provider. You need to get access to enter password and account details which locked devices don’t permit.

  • Grab a Telstra smart modem… Look on gumtree/facebook marketplace. Happy days

You don't need a modem with FTTP. Do you mean a router?

    • I thought the NBN NTD is the modem (I have FTTC and plugged the mesh straight into the NTD no problems. Same for Fixed Wireless at parent's place).

What I meant is that the OP doesn't need to obtain their own a modem for their FTTP connection, NBN provide the NTD with the connection.

    • Sorry I’m new to all this.

I did see the nbn box inside our garage and inside the box does look like it has a modem inside.

Does fttp mean that we have a modem on our property already?

So a router would just be okay in this case?

Thanks for all your advice and help

      • Yep plug in a router to the nbn NTD. What router are using now? If you don't have a router, how much do you want to spend?

        • If in the garage suggest getting a mesh system. Like the Tenda units that is like 3 for $99. One in the garage and place another in the house.

          • @netjock: I had a Tenda for a week and returned it back to Amazon to replace it with a TP link Deco E4, which was perfect and not much more expensive than the Tenda.
Tenda was horrible roaming between access points and my wifi would always drop.

However, my situation may be different as mine was a multi-floor apartment in a complex rather than a free-standing house, and the problem could have been Tendas ability to cope with congestion or it's lower signal strength.

            • @FirstWizard: I got 3+1 Tenda Nova. Using 2 at home which is pretty good. I think I've got the roaming issue you've got where it doesn't hand off. Haven't had drop off issue yet.

Gave 2 to the oldies and it seems to work for them. Better than using repeaters.

Bought Mercusys 2 pack and DOA, wouldn't sync.

thanks, no router atm. getting the house ready as it was just complete recently.

I'm happy with spending $200-300, we're in a free standing, single storey house (about 190m2 living space)

A mate did recommend getting the Deco X60. Is that overkill for 50/20 and my house size?

          Thanks again for you responses.

          • @trarob: Deco X60 is more suitable for Gigabit speeds. Did the builder install any ethernet wiring to the lounge, bedrooms and so on?

            • @Twix: Yes we do have an ethernet wiring in our living room and one in the master bedroom.

                @trarob: Asus RT-AX3000 $299 @ Scorptec or TP-Link Archer AX55 $229 @ Centre Com / Scorptec.

If you want something without spider leg antennas - TP-Link Deco X20. A single pack should provide enough Wi-Fi coverage. There is a two pack bundle too.

@Twix: thanks twix, will look into it.

    Thanks

I'm using a Google Nest Wifi

  • Do you have a budget?

    How big is the house?

    Single or double story?

Do you have ethernet through the house or do you want pure wifi? (If you don't know, we'll assume pure wifi)

    • thanks updated the post

  • You could get away with a mesh system with FTTP. TP Link might be the way to go. I always suggest tri-band, otherwise, you'll lose speed in the sharing of 5Ghz wifi band. If you running ethernet to other spots you can get away with dual band.

  • The Telstra gen 3 modem actually gives out a pretty good signal. I have a Google mesh because my stupid $500 modem was useless, but when I tried the Telstra modem the signal is actually stronger than my Google mesh now 🤔, should probably sell it hmm

  • The Gen 3 modem has some serious issues. Drop outs and rebooting etc. Not saying it won’t be an amazing modem but until Telstra drops a firmware update, avoid that thing for now. Holding onto a couple of them for when it all works properly without issue.
