  • Does 11th gen draw less power than 12th gen? I've heard 12th gen laptops are really poor on battery life.

8gb ram soldiered to the board, in 2022? Nahhh

Although I agree with you I think soldered is more common for these thin surface type of laptops

      • +2

Yeah I have a dragonfly which is soldiered, but with 16gb. 16 is imho bare minimum in 2022…

        • Yeah I agree… 8gb might struggle…

    • can't we install more RAM?

    • It's a 2021, that's why.

  • +2

This might need to be cleared out for $699 due to the soldered RAM

This is one expensive photo frame! There are a lot Android phones with even more RAM. A “business” laptop with 8GB of soldered RAM and only 256GB storage with Windows at the end of 2022 is just a glorified photo frame!

  • 8 GB RAM , no thanks. far too low for these days.

  • I was tempted to by this for my daughter as she’s starting uni and needs a laptop, then i read the comments. Is there any better laptops for not much more? She’ll only use it for MS Office and browsing and other typical uni software. Will this not suffice for 4 years?

this comes around every now and then. A bit heavier of course.

If she has access to the Lenovo education portal, then perhaps consider a 14" Flex 5 (direct link). I bought this with an upgrade to 16GB RAM for $930 (includes the extra 10% off). That's decent for the spec I think.

And no, 8GB will not suffice. With software and websites having increasingly bloated code, such that a simple website will cause your browser to use a GB of RAM, you won't get far with 8GB. I recommend 16GB as minimum for work laptops nowadays, even if the usage is "office work only".

I really appreciate your reply 🙏

        • …and it came around again :)

Just sign up for a month of eBay plus to get the better price. It's good value for the performance, and it doesn't weigh that much for its size.
I think touch screen is very handy for situations where you can't carry a mouse around. Personally I don't like touch pads.

Not a great deal due to the poor specs, needs to be at least two fiddy cheaper.

I ain't giving you no treefiddy you goddam Loch Ness monster! Get your own goddam money!

  • I tend to go for Ryzen cause benchmarks beat Intel's but are there reasons why Intel's better and in what sense?

    • Probably they bribe better to have their CPUs everywhere.

  • depends on what you do, I guess? I am using an Acer (the one with OLED panel) from one of the recent deals, with soldered 8gb, and have no issues editing 26mp raw photos in Capture One. checked in task manager, have 1.5 gb ram to spare

my gaming machine has 32gb, sure. for day to day usage 8gb is fine
