Why Do People Still Want to Order from The Fast Food Drive Thru Speaker Instead of The App?

Yes I'm having a whinge at slow people.

Now that Maccas has pretty much sorted out the app issues, why do people still want to order from the speaker? One reason I can think of is you can't request a specific Happy Meal toy.

I was stuck behind a woman who kept turning her head to the back seat multiple times and took minutes to order just a few items.

Rewards Point and the occasional Discount.

      • +2

Not worth it, see the comment below.

        • Admittedly if it wasn't for the rewards and the discounts, I probably wouldn't go to Maccas. I have several other competitors near me, but I have gotten sick of Guzman, and Oporto.

Furthermore, if I want a Big Mac, I can customise it. I found it tastes far better without Onion and the Pickle (as long as the bread doesn't fall apart first). Same with the Quarter Pounder, by removing Tomato Ketchup and Mustard).

As it is sometimes, the team member on the other end of the speaker can't hear you (which is why I say the code using the Phonetic alphabet, however once they didn't know how to spell X-Ray. LOL).

          :)

@BewareOfThe Dog: I personally hate McDonald's, and don't get take away much anyway. I just want to get a caramel frappe with no cream sometimes, and don't need them asking me if I have the app everytime I go through the drive through.

Those scumbags are just trying to minimise the number of employees, I also hate using the stupid touchscreen things, who wants to touch a communal touchscreen that every grub within a 10km radius has had their dirty mitts all over?

            • +2

@brendanm: I have similar sentiment regarding McDonalds.

Most of the food is over-rated and Bland, however their Marketing in the 70s began brainwashing todays older generations with Play Equipment, WSC Cricket Posters, and then Childrens Toys. Kids would nag their parents to go there, and parents could have a coffee and talk while their kids broke their limbs on the play equipment.

Their Marketing is up their with Steve Jobs.
Imagine if McDonalds bought their Beef Patties, Lettuce + Sauce from Hungry Jacks and sold their Single Patty Burger for more than the Double Patty Burger at HJ's?
              :)

So you criticise the app when you clearly don't even use it much because you don't like the company or take-away? Your opinion is worth less because you are clearly biased and don't use the product you are criticising.

Those scumbags are just trying to minimise the number of employees,

Cry more. You are a boomer that hates technology even though it makes things way more efficient and means they can sell food for cheaper.

I also hate using the stupid touchscreen

Yes, I would imagine you would. Something that makes ordering way faster, easier and more accurate.

a communal touchscreen that every grub

That is indeed not ideal, but it is what it is. You still open doors etc. that are freshly touched by other people.

@watwatwat: They still buy stuff from there, just prefer not to use the app, which is what OP was talking about. Their justification for not using the app is perfectly valid.

Yes, I would imagine you would. Something that makes ordering way faster, easier and more accurate.

Faster? Easier? Perhaps if you use it fairly often, but not necessarily if you don't. I go to McDonalds maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Their UI and categories are inconsistent and you have to put up with them pushing the current deals. I still use it, but there's no way it's quicker.

                • -6

@banana365: It’s definitely quicker using the app unless you’re over 70 and no good with apps. It’s simple to use even if you use the app once a year!!!

@bobwokeup: Wow, all the condescending dicks are coming out in this thread. Perhaps read back a little and realise that the conversation had moved on to the communal touch screens.

                        • @banana365: Didn’t say it can’t be improved but it’s still simple to use.

don't use the product you are criticising

Lol, why on earth would someone use something they criticise? Just don't use it bro.

I'm 36, I could give a shit less about getting a McDonalds burger for 5c less. The prices at McDonald's have never gone down.

Yes, I would imagine you would. Something that makes ordering way faster, easier and more accurate.

Navigating through 500 menus takes way longer than simply talking to an actual person, and saying "medium caramel frappe with no cream please". Done, easy.

That is indeed not ideal, but it is what it is. You still open doors etc. that are freshly touched by other people.

Less than ideal, it's plain stupid, same as the touchscreens in the doctors office of all places. I'm aware, I'm not a germaphobe, it's simply dumb.

So you criticise something you don't use? So, your opinion is close to valueless.

I'm 36, I could give a shit less about getting a McDonalds burger for 5c less.

Cool story bro. You don't like app or non-app because you don't like fast food, so why are you in this thread?

takes way longer than simply talking to an actual person, and saying "medium caramel frappe with no cream please". Done, easy.

This is where you commenting on something you have no idea about actually comes in to play. You aren't taking in to account the duration of the queue. Introduction of digital ordering has reduced queue times to order by a huuuuuge margin, I am sure.

Less than ideal, it's plain stupid,

Haha!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it's so "stupid", then why is McDonald's, Woolworths, Coles, Walmart etc. and companies all around the world investing big-time in digital touch screens?

See above. I don't use the app, because I don't want to. The end.

Why anyone likes eating that garbage is beyond me, but sometimes you just need some quick food because you've had stuff to do, it's not something people should aspire to eating often, it's terrible. Also, again, the thread is about why people use the app, not whether they love McDonald's.

This is where you commenting on something you have no idea about actually comes in to play. You aren't taking in to account the duration of the queue.

That is true but it also reduces customer queue times. I've personally had a huge reduction in wait times at supermarkets and fast food restaurants when they introduce self-checkout.

I've seen what a total shitfest a busy/large McDonald's was prior to a refurbishment. It took ages to queue, customers had to pick a queue and hope it was faster than other queues. It could take 10 minutes just to order and the place was very crowded.

Post-installation of touch screens, it was like a different world. They could re-design the whole restaurant to accommodate a larger pick-up area for food and probably a more efficient kitchen and delivery of food from kitchen to pick-up area. Customers could spread out and more easily view the menu items and order exactly what they wanted, with pictures etc. etc.

Why would you want additional incentive to frequent this establishment? It is garbage food and we should all be trying to avoid it as much as possible, not encouraging our use through points and discounts..

        • I do try and avoid it, but I am sick of Oporto and GVG. Subway is overpriced and take too long.
HJ's is @ 10 mins away each way, and given I only get 30 mins for lunch, it's impossible to have a reasonable break. :)

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: Need to try and shop and cook for yourself. Food will be 100x better, way cheaper and a lot healthier. Cooking can also be quite enjoyable but I understand this is quite difficult to do if you live alone and are only cooking for one.

But @brendanm, then you'll miss out on all the fun when the app inevitably has already did have a data leak.

Imagine, all of those McDonalds' enjoyers will be whining about how they had to freeze their credit cards, or how their email now has all this spam going to it, or how their insurance company 'mysteriously' bumped up their policy costs out of nowhere for some reason. And you won't be there to commiserate with them, man. You'll be laughing at them instead. You'll be laughing because you find their folly funny and you're tired of pretending that it's not.

    • I prefer apps when it’s a non standard order or would love an app for Subway. Though I haven’t had subway for years. I think i could count on one hand the number of times I’ve had fast food since pandemic started.

  • Cant order chicken patties on the maccers app

  • +10

The way I see it, in order to use the app you need to have planned before time. There's no point deciding to get something on impulse and then pull over in the carpark, order on the app, then drive through the drive-through to pickup.

Also not every company has sorted their app. I tried ordering on the Red Rooster app a few weeks ago. Got to the store, parked in their special app order bay and activated the order in the app. I watched 4 people pull up, walk in and order then walk out with their food before I got mine. Also at least a hand full of people I watched go in the drive-through and come out the other end

    • +1

Red rooster is a fkn joke when it comes to the app. Every order you put through the app goes to corporate then gets sent to the franchise. If you have an issue with the order Eg. Out of stock on chicken… Tough tits, you can't cancel the order. Franchise can't issue a refund since the money went to corporate.

You literally have to go to their website and lodge a complaint using the feedback forms.

  • +34

It’s way faster for me to say “give me x meal” then to pull over in the carpark, spend 5 minutes customising an app order while trying to apply my $2 discount and watching 5 other cars get in the drive through before me.

I’m not against using the app, but it aint always convenient.

    • +9

Yep…. If you don't want anything special or have any discounts in the app to apply, then the app is SLOWER than pulling up ordering, driving forward, tap your card and then collecting your food.

I could swing through the drive thru, order, collect my big mac meal and be on my way, by the time I've ordered in the app.

  • +32

I can't stand having single purpose apps on my phone. I order takeaway so infrequently, that why bother signing up for an account and install an app which offers marginal benefits at best. When I do drive through in Maccas, it takes a minute to rattle off my order. Whats the issue?

    • I have about 200+ Apps.

      • Same. I've got every possible app I could think of that I may ever need, so I don't have to go through installing and signing up on the spot when I need it.

      • KFC
      • Hungry Jacks

    • +1

For some reason, the KFC app applies a discount to my order every now and then. I could never figure out why. One time I ordered a zinger combo and only paid like $3 or $4. I used to get those 'we miss you' emails, but not recently.

      • lucky you - i prob visit kfc once a fortnight - but havent really had a reason to use the app.

used to get the 'secret menu' hack items but these days just get a large zinger box + 10 wicked wings.

      • +2

I always use the KFC App. I place the order at work, select PickUp inside, and select 'I'm inside the restaurant', before leaving the car. Sometimes cheaper than 'ordering off the board'.

  • +11

I rarely go to fast food joints and don't have the time to guess how easy the app maybe, nor do I want to divulge personal information to them. I prefer cash and love to not be a datapoint so they can optimise their cash extraction strategy, using the very little power I have, to not comply with large corporations makes me feel amazing.

  • Cause Murica.
But yeah don't get it, i've been in and out quicker than it took a car to move 4 car spaces all so they didn't have to get out of their car.

    • +4

I sometimes find some outlets, give priority to Drive thru over Walk-ins.

    • Depends where you are, the lines at In and Out (hamburger joint) are massive, so a worker or workers will often come out and take orders before you get to the drive through speaker.

  • +8

Because maybe you are running late getting back home from somewhere and its time the kids had lunch and its another 20min til you get home and then 20-30min to make something and the kids are hungry NOW so you stop at the closest maccas on the way home. It's illegal to use apps other than navigation and music whilst driving, and I'm not pulling over for 5-10 min to order through the app when it takes 2-3 min to order at the speaker. Faster for me, sucks to be you…..

    • It's illegal to use ANY app if it means you touch the screen.

      • Is it though in the car park once you get close to Maccas? After all unless it’s changed without my knowledge you legally don’t need to wear a seat belt in car parks (I still do as it’s an ingrained habit).

        • Car parks are an odd one as how they're treated changes depending on the state. Drive throughs (in some states) are treated as part of the public road, so the same restrictions apply. Other states have exemptions for paying for stuff at drive throughs as long as you are stopped. You could be done for using the Maccas app as you're using it to select what you're buying rather than using it to pay for it.

          • @banana365: Good to know thanks. I have mine on a holder so at least it’s not in my hand, so if I’m lucky I could get away with a warning.

      • It's illegal to use ANY app if it means you touch the screen.

@banana365 It should be illegal to make statments when you don't actually know the rules and laws

        Drivers with a full licence
There are only 2 ways you can use a mobile phone while driving:

Hands-free – you can only use your phone hands-free (without touching it) to:
        make or receive voice calls
play audio, for example, music and podcasts.
In a phone holder – you can only use and touch your phone to:
        make or receive voice calls
play audio, for example, music and podcasts
use as a driver’s aid, for example, maps and navigation apps or dispatch systems.

        • It should be illegal to make statments when you don't actually know the rules and laws

Cool, you'll be handing yourself in when this law is enacted then? Or maybe be aware that different states have different laws.

  • One reason is there are some customisations not available in the app.

Another is I don't want to load my credit card into another app/website. I would consider it if PayPal was an option.

  • I can understand more not app ordering for drive thru orders since it's not as easy to order while driving. Those that walk into a fast food restaurant and don't app order makes much less sense to me. Especially when there's a line just waiting to get their order in, you're waiting for no reason when your order could already be placed through the app.

Here's a few reasons specifically related to the Maccas app.

    1. I live pretty far from McDonald's, but sometimes stop in on a whim to grab something quick before work. If I have to sit in the car park for 5 minutes to order a happy meal on the app (yes that's how long it takes me) 6-12 other cars might get in front of me and I might end up late for work. I can get my food without the app within 2 minutes by ordering at the window.

    2. The few times I have used the app, I have somehow ended up with 3 cokes and no food when I thought I had ordered a happy meal. Another time I got 3 burger meals instead of 2 etc. When I asked about it at the counter they referred me to my phone and sure enough that's what it said I ordered. I do use the app for the deals, but I order at the kiosk in store.

    3. I'm stuck in my ways.

    4. I will forever be concerned I will end up with the wrong food again again.

    5. There's too much clutter on the Maccas app and I find it difficult to navigate.

    6. Not everyone finds it easy
Plot twist, I always use the KFC app to order KFC because it's simple and the deals are reusable.

Maybe all us non tech savvy people will just have to accept that OP is better than us.
All hail OP for using the app.
Shame on all of us who don't like using it, we are scum.

I am more surprised such a technologically advanced being such as yourself is kicking it with the peasants of Ozbargain.

I'm here for good value, not cheap stuff.

If you call this app for the technologically advanced then you need to go back to school.

I don't think that's what was stated… Maybe you can join them at this place you call school?

        • It’s what they implied or you don’t think enough to read between the lines?

If you expect people that actually understand technology to go back to school then you need a big wake up.

@bobwokeup: No. Not at all what they implied.

Richmond Tigers made a joke, you thought they were being serious somehow.

As a disabled person, I really hate the new ordering systems. I understand and appreciate others with disability enjoy them though. But for me, I need the interaction and someone else trained in a million menus to punch buttons.

If I can avoid yet-another-app on my phone, I will.

  • Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I'm glad you asked. I don't want Macca's on my phone.

…. now that I think about it. I never want to eat Macca's again. They're slow, expensive and the food is awful.

      How are they expensive?
