This is modified sine wave and it can destroy your devices. Thats why its cheap.

Modified sine wave won't necessary kill devices. There are only certain types of device should avoid it, for example fridge for camping. However this 150w one would work perfectly fine for mobiles or low power laptops in a long trip or work purposes. My team used to power up multiple work laptops while travelling in car between major cities in Oz using this 'modified sine wave' inverters. No device got killed.

You're only lucky until it hit, laptop charger has some extra protection built-in but even so you're doing wrong way converting dc to ac and back to dc. With the price of pure sine wave nowadays it'd be very unwise to waste money on these dinosaur.

Isn’t it a bit ironic they’re bad for it, when the DC power supplies are just gonna rectify and smooth out the curve anyway

    • Thanks for the heads up.
Pure sine wave or nothing for me.

      • CPAP machines are sensitive to bad power and their manufacturers say modified sine wave is fine, I'd check the device you intend to use and see if it's fine.

        • That's alright. I already have a 1000W pure sine wave inverter.

          • @edfoo: Cool. Hopefully it will help others to realise PSW isn't always necessary.

    150w from a cigarette lighter - after 12V - > 240V conversion losses. Most cigarette lighter sockets are 120w maximum…

    • May be they want to burn the fuse in car, instead of burn the inverters. So that hey won't have customer coming back in store asking for replacement. :)

  • +4

be aware, that you are more likely to blow your car's fuse on the cigarette socket. always keep your load under 120w if you are going to use cigarette lighter

  • Neat. These are limited but they have their uses, like running an electric blanket in winter, or running small fans or charging batteries for drills and laptops. Nothing that can't be done better in some other way, but will all cost a lot more in time and money than $35

  • Similar price and much higher cpacity at K-mart https://www.kmart.com.au/product/600w-dc-to-ac-240v-power-in…

    • This Dometic inverter can be powered by cigarette socket, while the Kmart inverter needs a 12V auxiliary battery.

    • Does the KMart 600W Power Inverter produce pure sine wave? - does not say in the description

      • +1

If it's that cheap and doesn't say, it'd almost have to be modified sine wave.

        • makes sense, thank you.
