    • I see a lot of interesting flavours that sachets and other scoop coffee just don't have. Any way to use these pods without an exclusive pod machine?

      • You can use any Nespresso compatible machine (original style pods, not the Vertuo ones), if that is what you mean by exclusive. Doesnt have to be a L'Or machine.

If you mean without using any pod machine, then no not really - not in a way that makes any sense anyway. Sure, you could rip open the pods and brew the coffee with an Aeropress (or whatever coffee brewing method you like)…but that is not really a sensible option (economically, environmentally, etc).

        • The latter yep, so what makes it not worth it that really makes a machine mandatory?

          • +2

@dbmitch: The coffee is in pods…

          • +8

@dbmitch: When you buy pods, you are paying a premium for the convenience of using pods (and pod machine). If you are ripping the pods open and using the coffee from the pods as regular ground coffee, then you are paying that premium for no reason (and being extra bad to the environment by wasting the resources and creating the waste associated with the pods/packaging).

It would be much much much cheaper to buy coffee beans or preground coffee in regular packaging (and better for the environment!).

Think of it like this: a can of coke is a convenient serving package. But if you are not actually using the can / serving size, and are just going to pour 3L worth of coke cans into a bowl of punch, it would have been far cheaper to buy a 3L bottle of coke rather than 3L worth of individual cans.

I believe pods are about 7g of ground coffee. For 31.5c per pod, that is $45/kg of coffee. For $45, you can buy much much much better coffee from a local roaster than you will find in these pods! Or, you could buy Aldi beans for $15/kg (used to be $12!) and still probably get much much better coffee!

Just doesnt really make sense to go about it that way. If you like the particular flavour descriptors, I'm sure you could find similar flavours, but much much better, from a local roaster somewhere!

Dont get me wrong, I'm not anti pods…i think they have a place. But really, it's for the convenience of using a pod machine. If you are not using a pod machine, then that really defeats the purpose of buying pods, and you are much much better off NOT buying pods! :)

            • @caprimulgus: Sounds fantastic mate!

I'm only after those interesting flavours, so if there are better alternatives, I'll surely get those instead. Seeing your cost analysis, they make even the premium blends at my local coffee house worth it.

I'll bypass the pods then, I'm still gonna buy as many Snickers PODS as I can get haha

              • @dbmitch: All good mate - hope you find something you enjoy! :)

And yes, I think Snickers Pods are the better way to go! :)

              • @dbmitch: I was about to say "They make Snickers flavoured Nespresso coffee pods!?" then I realised what you meant. :)

            • @caprimulgus: From Product Details:

              Product dimensions ‏ : ‎ 0.33 x 0.79 x 1.55 cm; 52 Grams

Believe most pods are 5g or less, after accounting for the capsule as well.

Someone one mentioned that there is only one brand of regular sized pods with 7g of coffee, but I can't remember which one it was.

              • @KSMLJ: Cheers - that makes the maths even worse! ($63/kg) :)

            • @caprimulgus: Can't believe you had to explain this lol.

      • You can use a Waeco Nannopresso manual coffee maker. Great for camping.

You can buy Nanopresso NS Adapter or Nanopresso Barista Kit accessories separately in order to use Nespresso** Original capsules and most of compatibles or make double espresso shots.

        • i was thinking of one of these to take overseas with me. i often take a single plunger but its messy/breaks.

have you got much use out of yours?

          • +1

@CheapskateQueen: Lots. We have a caravan we use a lot. About 6 months in total last year. We spend a lot of time off power as well.

I used to use ordinary ground coffee with various options. Moka pot, plunger, drip etc. All had problems with storage of fresh coffee in the van, disposing of the grounds and a messy cleanup. The best was aeropress.

Then I found the Waeco. Game changer. Really good espresso, clean, no mess and the pods are a lot easier to keep in van. It's a bit fiddly, and I scalded my fingers a few times at first.

If you want a longer coffee, get the barrista kit. It lets you use 120ml of water.

            Enjoy your trips overseas 😃

            • @jebdra: *Wacaco (Waeco make fridges) :)

            • @jebdra: thanks for that. ordered the nanopress but will probably fork out extra for the adapter to use pods which is easier when travelling.

might use it at the office as well instead of my plunger!

              • +1

@CheapskateQueen: NS Adapter is frankly pretty handy for travelling (if you dont want to waste time and luggage space taking a hand grinder).

Also recommend the Barista Kit as an absolute necessity, if using with a decent hand grinder. Double dose is definitely worth it, and I would recommend always using the larger water tank for better temperature stability! Even if you are pulling shorter shots, especially when using pods, the larger tank will keep temps throughout the system hotter!

                Enjoy! :)

    • Thanks mate, not a huge fan of the flavored coffee pods but original line will work just fine. :)

  • +3

A full-bodied, rich and intense espresso with exceptional length in the mouth

    • +4

For a minute there I thought you were talking about coffee

  • Anyone tried estremo?

  • +1

Caramel one seems to have good reviews. Giving it a go.
Tried the purple one (Supremo?) and it's pretty good for the price

    • I tried caramel when lor was posting out trial capsules and I agree caramel was very pleasant and fragrant ! Exceeded my expectations

    • I feel like the Colombia has some caramel notes as well.

  • any deals for starbucks pods?

  • +2

At a quick glance their packaging looks like condoms.

    • +1

Would you like cream with that?

  • Price gone up, Jan'22 they were $29 without S&S.

    • +4

Thanks I'll just grab my time machine

  • $31.50 for S&S.

    Good deal.

    • Unfortunately not a good product these flavours though.

      • I don't drink coffee but my partner and son do and they like these

  • I use the large button on my Nespresso Citiz for my mug, 350ml I think. The rest being milk.

For the pod coffee experts out there should be doing it differently, say 2 pods using the small button, or something else again?

I realise I can do any combo that I think tastes good but curious what others do.

    • +2

Medium button with pod, then large button after dumping the pod. Top up with milk. The end of the pod can be a little bitter and the early pull is better anyway (majority of the caffeine and flavour). Plus you have the advantage of the system cleaning itself out on the 2nd water pull.

      • Thanks for this. Just got one of these machines and was curious what people do. I'm going to try this next time haha

    • There pods only hold 5g of coffee, which is less than a third of a double shot (~18g), so don't add too much water!

      • Maybe 2 pods using small button per mug.

  • Awesome Thankyou. Now I just need some cheap coconut water and the pantry will be restocked…. 🤞

  • Could someone please help with a selection for Pods. Was just given a machine and I’ve never tried Pod coffee.
I’m after something equivalent to a strong Flat white. Cheers

    • does your machine do Flat Whites / Milk Dispense?
Smaller POD machines usually only make the espresso (I'd recommend 9 - 12 intensity depending on your preference)

  • How is the shelf life for pods?

I know they're sealed and all that, but does the coffee degrade in the pod. Has anyone used these after a year or two. Any difference?

  • +1

I tried all three flavours when they sent out free samplers.

I was disappointed by all of them. The coffee notes were weak and the flavour nearly non-existent. This was just using the small button, no extra water, and no milk - so as undiluted as you can get.

    • Yep I'm drinking one now and it's gross.

  • +1

Moccona are a little cheaper, and come out of the same factory in France as these. They just don't have the same range of flavours.

  • +2

Did not enjoy these flavours. Have a weird 'artificial' sweetener taste

    • +1

I was thinking about what's weird with these pods and you nailed it 100%.

      • I got the sample pack with the 3 different flavours, vanilla caramel and chocolate. They all just kind of tasted the same with a gross artificial flavour.

  • What's pod maintenance like do you have to clean it or rinse it out after every use or just once a week or month.

Pods look like a simple way to make coffee but if there is too much clean up involved it might become too expensive time and energy wise.

    • All I've ever done is turn it on without a pod once per month, it's boiling water, not much room for going bad.

      • Then I guess you empty it out?

That sounds pretty sweet then very low maintenance

        • I just replace the water when it's near empty, run a single empty run without capsule which goes clear in one run.

It's extremely easy to maintain, I don't use any chemicals. The frother is a little harder, but I just rince and wipe with a paper towel after each use.

The capsule bin inside only holds about 5-6, that needs to be emptied in order to put one in at least once a week.

          • @Jimbuscus: What happens if there is no water let's say a kid somehow plays with it will it go on fire

            • @AlienC: If it runs out of water it starts squealing loud enough to hear from the next room. I've done it a couple times, nothing to worry too much about.

    • +1

I had cockroaches and eggs in my pod machine. After cleaning the coffee pods still smell like roaches.
I dunked the whole machine into boiling water then left it dry for a month. It did the trick and the machine is still going strong after 4 years. Feel free to use this technique for maintenance- but YMMV.

  • $0.315 per capsule, just bought 50 double capsule coffees for $31.50

    • Damn, I think they're out of stock now. Those would've been perfect for my parent's L'or coffee machine.

      • I canceled my order and went with the Moccona for cheaper, all that matters is they are Nespresso compatible.

        • Do Moccona have the chocolate and caramel flavors?

  • +1

These built in flavours are never good. Best to get the syrup separately and add it yourself.. The Coles brand vanilla one is excellent.

  • +2

I've tried Starbucks, Moccona, Nespresso, Lavazza, Vittoria, Urban Brew, L'or, Republica and Coles brand. Starbucks is the strongest and the best.

    • +1

Which one do you rank after 2nd,3rd,4th after starbucks?

Starbucks are my favourite too but I'm also looking for a backup if starbucks are not on special. LOR is my 2nd preference but they are not even close to starbucks quality.

      • 2nd Nespresso (India), 3rd Urban Brew (10), 4th Moccona. Vittoria is the worst.

    • i agree the starbucks ones are top notch, i like the OG pike-place one, but never found a good deal on them other than the regular 20% off at coles, still expensive even then.

  • I'm assuming caramel has sold out? :(

    • Looks like it. :(

    • Caramel is back in stock if you need it.

  • Thanks OP

  • Last sale batch down to the last 100 caps. Just in time. Thank you OP

  • only 5 gram per pod, be aware.
