Brainwavz B2 Preorder USD $109.5 from MP4nation (USD $170 Normal Price) Free FedEx Shipping

140

My Brainwavz M4 arrived early this week. Hopefully those who ordered early on during the $28 deal have also received theirs as well. While M4 sounds very good, I have decided to get B2 as well for more critical listening. How often can we get flagship earphones for around $100? Well, this may be the only few times; the reason it is so cheap is because this is a pre-order. mp4nation will ship the B2 to you when more stock arrives around 12 July, as they've sold out the previous batch.

B2 uses the well-known Knowles TWFK dual balanced armature drivers, which many other high-end earphones use, e.g. Audio-Technica CK10, VSonic GR01, Phiaton PS200, NOCS NS800, etc. Dual means there's a woofer and a tweeter in each earpiece. Balanced armature (BA) drivers are a different technology compared to dynamic drivers which are found in most speakers, headphones and earphones. More importantly, most high-end universal and custom/stage in-ear monitors use BA drivers.

B2 is identical to Fischer Audio DBA-02; both of which are made in the same OEM factory. Reviews suggest that B2 is neutral and analytical (aka detailed). The goal of higher-end audio products is to re-produce music or audio as close as possible to how it was originally intended to sound like. This is what some of us are after. Caveat: Don't buy this if you only care about overpowering bass or if you're too sensitive to prominent treble. And, it might not be a good idea to buy it if you're inexperienced with in-ear 'phones or IEMs (i.e. if this is your first IEM).

There are tons of positive reviews by both audiophiles and non-audiophiles alike.

ljokerl has reviewed over 240 IEMs and ClieOS has reviewed over 150 IEMs. (warnings: the following two links are not for dail-up/slow internet users)

ljokerl considers B2 to be as good as (if not better) IEMs such as Westone 3, Etymotic ER-4S, Shure SE535, Ortonfon e-Q7, etc. Most of which are flagships and they cost anywhere from $200 to $400 in the US. And the free FedEx shipping (1-5days) makes this deal even sweeter (normally USD $16).

I also found out recently that you can earn 100 reward points by subcribing to the mp4nation's newsletter, making this deal $2 cheaper.

  • How do these compare to the UE 700s?

    • +2

I've had both, the B2s I found were significantly better with the highs slightly clearer and less sibilant. The bass had more crispness too, the only thing the U700 has going for it is the size, but if you already have the ue700s, this isn't THAT big a step up.

  • +4

"+" for the write up alone!!!

    • Yes, +1 for the writeup. Kingpage is very informative and he was also very willing to help me decide between buying the M4 and the SP51 last time. Would also recommend using his referral. No harm in it.

  • +3

UE700 has "occasional ear-ripping sibilance and a generally greater tilt towards brightness compared to the DBA-02 (B2)". Even though B2 and UE700 share the same drivers, the tuning seems to make UE700 inferior (with the piercing highs).

  • Might want to mention in title that it's a pre-order.

  • Ahh finally good to see a good IEM on OzBargain.

For ~110 I would never hesitate to recommend the B2 above the UE700, or almost against any other headphone in the range. My two main IEMs are the DBA-02 Mk2 and the Brainwavz M3, but having had a few weeks of experience with the B2, if I had had the opportunity to pick them up at this price I wouldn't have hesitated.

Could be a bit analytical for people used to either bose or sennheiser sound signatures, but I found the B2 to be a very comfortable phone that didn't cause any fatigue at all. Will probably order a pair for travel or work at this price.

  • Hmmm…this is very tempting, don't know if Im gonna buy this or the hd25.

  • +1 on B2 as well, superb IEM indeed

Although B2 is superior to UE700, I have both and I still prefer UE700 for hip hop and dance tunes

  • nice.. deal still available at the same price. facebook 5% voucher code not working though..

    • The voucher never worked on this deal.
