It’s 2nd in Choice’s top coffee machines to avoid to buy: https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/kitchen/coffee-mac…

    “ Sunbeam Barista Plus EMM5400SS.

    CHOICE Expert Rating: 53%
    Taste test score: 40%
    Price: $749
While this coffee machine scores slightly higher overall than the other Sunbeam machine, it costs more than twice as much, which is a lot to pay for a dismal tasting cup of coffee (it scored just 40% on our taste test, after all).

With features such as digital controls and an in-built conical burr grinder, it scores a decent 72% for ease of use but falls down on coffee temperature consistency which means it's not reliable when pumping out more than 1 or 2 cups of coffee. ”

They base it of value for money. When they reviewed it, it was $750, now it's $400. I'm sure their opinion would change. Mostly positive reviews on Amazon & Youtube.

      • I suspect choice doesn't know how to finely tune the machine

        • +7

I suspect the vast majority of buyers of these Sunbeam, Breville, Delonghi (et al) machines don't know how to set up their machine for best results. To that end, they are presenting some sort of real world outcomes view.

          • @[Deactivated]: Curious… How do you really fine tune the machine?

I got Breville 920, but i only know how to fine tune coffee grinding, tamping and length of extraction which are nothing to do with the machine itself…

            • @meong: length of extraction sounds like machine tuning

Idk, maybe temperature setting, pressure, etc.

              • @TEER3X: Oh yeah well with length extraction, i just use the manual button all the time and press stop once i'm done.

With pressure though there is nothing to adjust on the 920

          • @[Deactivated]: This is very true, but any reviewer who does not have the skill to do this shouldn't be reviewing coffee machines.

In the end they will just recommend the machine that they got lucky with and got a good extraction.

I have the max and I think it is a great machine.

I don't trust choice reviews at all anymore. Would look at other reviews around and base my decision on that.

  • +2

For that price I’ll give it a shot ;) thanks op

    • +8

Hopefully it gives you more than that :D

    • +1

Don’t froth over it if it turns out sour :)

  • +3

Lol at the taste test score. That's pretty terrible. What does Hoffman think?

    • What Hoffman says isn't gospel btw.

    • +8

Lol, I'd trust Lord Hoffman more than Choice for all my coffee needs.

  • The tap and go grinder is a little annoying as you have to hold it down to grind as there is no auto setting. I thought they would have modified that in the model

    • They say they have a grind timer?

      • It looks like the timer just records how long you hold it down to grind

        • +1

          That's very annoying indeed

  • I have the max. Overall it’s an ok machine. Works fine if you’re not too particular or picky about coffee. Good first machine but after 12 months I’m going to upgrade to a dual boiler. Takes too long to make a milk drink on these.

  • +2

Meh, I'll stick with my Aeropress.

    • +1

And I'll keep walking in Reeboks.

      • Honestly, I have no idea what that means

        • +1

I thought we were sharing random thoughts.

      • Are they still around? Last pair of Reeboks I owned were back in the 90s..

  • Great price……..but Am I right in thinking that the milk frother is the biggest let down?

  • The deep fryer seemed good value as well on the same Amazon page

    Don't buy.

I agree with with the Choice review.

Taste would have come down to the machine seems incapable of making a hot coffee, 70 degrees seems to be its max. You'll need to microwave it after making.
You can pre-heat and pre-run everything, its just not going to get up to temperature.

The unforgivable for me was how purposely hard they made repairs. Mine is now leaking water after two years, pretty simple fix right - either an O ring or split hose.
You'll need to dismantle about 12 panels, 40 screws working your way from behind then below to get anywhere.

I have this machine and I like it. There's a lot of hate for sunbeam on ozbargain but I find once you get used to the machine, it can (at least to me) make comparable coffee to breville (having had some at a friends house with a breville dual boiler). I will agree reliability is better in the brevilles, though I've had mine for 2+ years now pumping out a minimum of 4 cappuccinos a day and its not leaking or broken, but there's a lot of community feedback that it does seem to happen.

Edit: I do not have this machine, I have its predecessor, my bad!

    • +1

You're right about the dislike, I don't own a sunbeam but have friends that do, and they always make an unbelievably good cup of coffee, must be the beans

  • +2

EM7000 is a good machine from sunbeam

    • Especially when it was $399 from HN years ago, still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on that one

    • I've had this for 2 years and it's great. Came with 3 free coffee grinders too :)

  • OOS

  • This is a great machine

  • +2

Great value! But probably incorrect to label the group head "commercial".

Here a summary page of a recent Choice review.

    • +1

58mm referring to the size of the basket the group head accepts, which is the standard size for cafe machines. But not the materials used thats for sure! Also I am not sure how useful this is, I could not find an aftermarket basket that would fit the portafilter well, and didn't really want to be trying other portafilters as I had no idea if they would work or not.

      • But still misleading, it's a "commercial size" group head, without the commercial duty cycles which the word usually implies.

  • has anyone gone from a budget kmart espresso machine to something like this, is it worth the upgrade?

love the kmart espresso, capable of great coffee, it is pressurised though, not sure how much of a difference that makes

    • +1

To be honest, my Delonghi pressurised makes a great coffee. As goods as a cafe most times, but can also be left wanting as well. I do use a good grinder and great beans though. You might get a slight improvement with the Breville, but it won’t make a great coffee each time.

      • same, the kmart machine is capable of barista coffee when you get it right

i don't bother with beans or grinding since my current machine doesn't have those features or is programmable, besides i figure the more variables the harder it is to make a great coffee

atm i am happy trying out whatever the half price grounded coffee is at woolies
