NSW Enhanced Protections Requiring Both The Licence Number and The Card Number to Pass a Document Verification Service

Replacing a NSW driver licence will provide customers with a new card number, protecting them from unauthorised DVS checks using the old card's information.

This is because of enhanced protections which came into effect in NSW on 1 September 2022 requiring both the licence number and the card number to pass a Document Verification Service (DVS) check.

A DVS check is used by institutions such as banks to verify a person’s identity.

Both the licence number and the card number are required to pass a DVS check for NSW licence holders.

Did Optus breach include card number?

    • Possibly, but that's easy to change.

    • Yes for some people.
      From Optus FAQ

If the licence number and card number on your driver licence has been exposed, we strongly recommend you apply for a new card. For all other customers impacted, including those that have only had their driver licence number exposed, a replacement card is not required.

Already implemented for a while when activating a kogan prepaid

Hopefully they won't be allowed to store the card number, otherwise the next breach will bring us back to where we are now.

Card number can be easily changed though. So whenever there's a breach you can get a new one.

I wouldn't call time spent and a $29 fee an easy fix for other people's incompetence.

neither, but read the context of the thread, now that card number is required for validation, there is a way to secure your documents even if the card number is leaked. This is in contrast to when only the immutable license number was leaked.

I wasn't suggesting it was convenient, just that it can be fixed now.

    Thanks for the info.

Would be nice if the government communicated this to everyone, there's been a lot of confusion regarding NSW drivers licence replacement as it only replaced the card number, and many people were unaware this would be sufficient as this new verification system only came into use this month.

    OzB doing the government's job.

  • The information above has been posted on the service nsw web site for a couple of days now. It has included this newer information relating to DVS check procedure. Just click on the yellow highlighted Optus Breach section at the very top of the home page.

The problem is all other states offer free for changing physical license, only NSW requires you to pay upfront by yourself and reimburse with Optus. Sigh….

  • How do I know which my info got leaked? I am Optus previous customer (got the Optus email) and back then I used my old NSW drivers license which I rencently renewed early this year.

  • Betcha the NSW Department of Customer Service are thanking their lucky stars that they coincidentally started requiring the NSWDL card number for document verification at the start of the month before this whole shitshow started.

Otherwise they'd be scrambling like the other states' roads departments to modify or bodge together some solution for their ramshackle systems which assume the licence numbers stay the same for the rest of the person's life to work out some sort of compromise.

I'd want to keep my licence number even if it were leaked. I remember mine off by heart, a lot of my friends and family do as well. Now it's just going to be like a car registration plate which can be exposed to everyone, but can't really be used for ID theft.

    • Its same except for VIC and QLD, which doesnt have DL card number.

The question is why NSW Transport still dont allow people to change DL license number while other states already started the process..
