Just my view, but bought 2 x G15's (the ones with 2060 cards in them) - One died after 14 months (motherboard failure) the other after 18 months (screen just stopped)…never again. Managed to mcguyver one semi working franken-laptop from two damaged ones but i'll never trust the brand again sadly.

hopefully their build quality has improved.

damn, that is concerning - i was considering one myself (currently debating with a Gen 7 Legion Slim 7 from Lenovo's website) and while I've heard horror stories about ASUS' QC, I didn't realise they were this common.

        Somewhat related.

Should have ordered a Lenovo but ordered an Intel Nuc M15, stock. Good hardware overshadowed by weak/loose hinges.

Lenovo still has some of the best hinges. But for business premium, HP is supposed to be quite good.

With that being said, for gaming laptop. I believe Razer/Lenovo would be the go to from my experience.

        • Thanks for the heads up - I'm pretty sure i know which one to go with now :)
I'm realistically trying to be able to use it as a daily driver for uni too

@RegorForgot: My two cents- disclaimer: I do not play games on Laptops. ( I used to usually buy laptops every year- haven't bought one for the last four years for myself since getting HP Spectre x360).
HP has been very reliable. My current go to is my 4.5 yrs old HP Spectre x360 16" ( lasted the longest for me, and has all the frills that I wanted, including a 4k touchscreen, and the 3k price after discount (RRP was $3899) was well worth it), and it has better specs than my almost three year old work laptop. Current work laptop also HP- an EliteBook.

Microsoft SurfaceBook is very sturdy, and performs well but battery life may be an issue over a period of time. (Not worth full price- will only buy on discounts- never had any issues with drivers, BSOD etc.)

Dell laptops are great, and extremely sturdy- have never failed me- but never inspired me as well.
Asus was great too- very good build and lasted a few years, and was passed on when I bought a new laptop the next year.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro (Orange) was abject failure ( bought two approx. 8 yrs back, both froze up after six months because of faulty hinges- has a RRP of 2.2k. Hopefully better quality control now.)
Acer, the less said the better.
Never bought Mac, but have heard great things about MacBook Pros.

            • @darkmattersunB6c0MV: Thank you for your recommendations! My absolute original "poster child" laptop to get was the Surface Book but I realised that nowadays most games require a lot more brunt than what it offered as a 1660ti is simply getting dated. That's why I've decided to go down the gaming laptop route instead of buying ultraportables. The Legion Slim 7 i'm considering at this point in time has a 6800S which should be on par with a 100W 3070. That's enough for my graphics needs and I'm going to await for its sale (in a few months, I still want to get closure from reviews on it to see if it really is worth the price tag).

Thankfully, from what I've heard Lenovo has kind of upped their game with hinges and while some of the 2020 and 2021 Legion 7s had a lot of hinge issues that seems to be completely gone now with their 2022 models.

Seriously though, why does laptop shopping have to be so damn hard?!

            Spec/QA for Legion 5 vs g15

A lot of anecdotal evidence you see on the net and most people who have issues are the ones who'll post their reviews. Have a look at the comparisons and see for yourself, I do see on Reddit that Legion is popular but I've had bad experiences with Lenovo + customer service and an issue with hinge problems and even thought it was within warranty they refused to repair the hinge saying it was my fault.

To knowledge all ASUS laptops have 2 year warranty? Shouldn't you have been able to have them repaired ?

    • +6

if theyre in this ballpark figure they should be fixed under consumer law

12 months on our ones. Also for info I bought them at two different shops (Amazon and physical store). I can’t put my finger on it - when working the units were great, but none literally just stopped working when the motherboard failed and the other one the monitor just upper and died one day. Other than that they were fine!

Only one year, in China they have 3 years warranty, and my laptop had changed twice mainboard in a year, each time I had to wait for 2-3 months for the new mainboard from taiwan which means my laptop was in the service centre half a year during the one year warranty.

At this price point, it might be good to get a desktop and a laptop (nitro 5)

    • Nitro 5 isn't the best as a daily driver and is quite cheap (in terms of quality), if i were doing a laptop/desktop combo i'd get a ~6700XT system with a Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5 Pro which is much more suited

FWIW these had an extra 10% off "before 7am" the other day.. so could possibly be cheaper again soon enough.

    • Wdym was there an extra 10% off sale?

So the price was around 2160?

      • Correct… i had it in my cart… but stupidity decided not to buy it.. it is a beast for this price..

        • Dayum perhaps prices will get cheaper

        • I called them up because I bought it at the sale price $2399 the day after the 10% sale ended, to see if they can give a sort of a discount I was told no :(

I've had a Zephyrus M GU502 for about 2-2.5 years now and it's been a pretty solid laptop but if I were to get something today I'd be looking at the Intel NUC X15 units.

    https://www.mwave.com.au/product/diy-bundle-deal-intel-x15-l…

    Intel X15 Laptop i7-11800H QHD RTX3060 + 32GB RAM + 2TB SSD
$1,899.00 - Just need to add an OS.

    • What are your reasons?

      • There are a few reasons.

-I like the form factor (Macbook aesthetics with gaming capabilities).
-Reviews say that the X15 series are decent (not amazing) with thermals (I've had to go through the process of undervolting my system but most of that is due to the 9th-Gen Intel CPU).
-While I want something portable, it mainly sits on my desk connected to a dock so I'd prefer the majority of IO to be in the rear of the device as opposed to the side.
-A lot of the other suitable gaming laptops tend to have numpads which I personally never utilise and prefer to go without for better typing ergonomics.
-My current has 16GB RAM soldered to the board (I added another 16GB stick for 32GB) but would prefer to be able to choose my own dual channel memory.
-Thunderbolt support so if needed I can get an external GPU.

If the X15 laptops were 12th-Gen with 4000-Series GPUs, I'd be picking one up.

  • Kudos to JBHIFI for being so reasonable with pricing and customer satisfaction!
