Unfortunately peak season on top of coming off restricted travel just recently may be the problem. I was looking at flights for mid-jan a couple of weeks ago, before the recent travel restrictions, and they were ridiculous. These were only ~$2k each with a good airline so not quite as bad, what site was she looking on?

I have my fingers and toes crossed that with eased restrictions there might be more flights incoming to drive the price back down soon.

  • Flight prices are expensive because of the world has been starved of Japan. Maybe book somewhere else in Asia, and onwards to Japan from there. Even if they will be expensive, shorter flight would work out cheaper per mile flown.
If you have time on your hand, maybe try booking multiple cruises going via Asia, see few countries and then go to Japan.

You can pick up some mid priced tix during jetstar sales in early December. We went 3 years ago $870 return. We are going febuary means jr misses 1st week of school, but tix were $460 rt each and the ski resorts are not crazy expensive.

Do you mean $5000 for an air fare or air fare plus accomodation? If it's $5000 for the whole holiday then how long are you planning to go for?

  • +1

    Yes, its very good holiday.

If you're travelling in the peak travel season, you'll be paying top dollar.

I mean, you want to travel to a popular destination, during peak holiday period, that is less than two months away, you gotta pay the price.
