Also here's a better product description. Perhaps Macpac wouldn't need to discount it if their product pages weren't lacking crucial product info.

    It's Gore-Tex. You know about Gore-Tex?

    2.5-layer 100% recycled polyester… expensive polyester….

Imagine buying 500 kgs of some metal and plastic in a form of a $50k car.

      • I am not doing it.

      • No thanks, a 500 kg car is going to be horrible

        • That's where yo momma comes in.

Worth mentioning that all Patagonia profits now go towards a good cause.
    Pretty cool brand imo.

  • Tempted. Very positive reviews
    Alpine Helmet‒Compatible Hood
Review says it makes hood very big when not wearing helmet.

  • Ozb's fav clothes waterproof material: Gore-Tex

  • whats wrong with goretex?

    • +1

Nothing, it's been long the best membrane, at least for regular users in most cases.

    The jacket seems expensive.

There are some items on "sale" at Mountain Designs
    - https://www.mountaindesigns.com/categories?q=:relevance:deal…

    • Personal experience, I've had terrible after sales service with them in the past when they still had physical stores. I don't imagine it's improved now that they're part of Anaconda and moved entirely online.
If you're certain of the size/fit of the clothing, then it looks like a good deal. Just hope you don't need to deal with them afterwards, or that they actually give half a shit these days.

i was about to call you an idiot as im a patagonia fanboy but clicked the link and saw the marmot minimalist jacket for $138 which is a fantastic deal and bought this instead.. this jacket is commonly compared to patagonia torrent shell 3L which is about $220 everywhere. and is one of the best bang for back jackets

OPs jacket is overkill for basically everywhere in Australia except Tasmania but the minimalist and torrentshell are both sufficient even there.

edit: sorry but i took the last large for anyone interested, still XXLarge and small. this is a fantastic deal

Applied code BIRTHDAY10 for $10 off.
Sent by MD & expired long ago, but worked! Paid by 4 x $32 payments.

Seems good, good reviews & comments.
        https://www.switchbacktravel.com/reviews/marmot-minimalist
Only issue in comments - would be better if longer. And review recommends Paclite Plus - more breathable.

Bought the XXL, as no XL. Previous (non Gortex) rain jackets over last decades have been roomy XL (for layers to keep warm) but twice the 400g weight.

MD have change of mind returns policy. In case it doesn't suit.

        • good luck with your order, unfortunately they cancelled and refunded mine. they must not of had any larges left when i purchased mine

          • @jonnys1n: That's what you get for taking the last L😣 What a bummer! You sounded very keen on it.

XXL are still showing as low stock, so should be OK. Just hope it isn't too big

          • @jonnys1n: Good news (for me), your Mountain Designs order is on its way!

      • +1

@jonnys1n thank you! What a steal of a deal on the minimalist. Extra $20 off for signing up and using WELCOME20

        • yep i know, they ended up cancelling and refunding my order though. not sure why

          • @jonnys1n: dang.. frustrating. Mine shipped today!

            • +1

@epmonp6: Mine arrives later this week. Just in time for the expected rains on the East Coast.

        • Hows the jacket?

Thought XXL might be too big, although I use similar size rain jackets over warm layers in the cold on travels. So good size.

Impressed with it - so light & my first GoreTex.

Had worn 12+ year old Mountain Design rain jacket on walk to shops (twice the weight but half the price on sale) - to keep out cool wind. Arrived home to find it's replacement.

Still figuring out all the adjustments.
Length just covers pockets - don't want water running down jacket & into pockets!
Hood doesn't store away is only immediate downside over previous jackets. Could be caught on branches & get damaged.
Those older jackets had to be waterproofed regularly & didn't breath well.

Another option, although not on sale, the Torrentshell 3L jacket is $220 direct from Patagonia (who might be easier to deal with in the event of exchanges/returns), or Paddy Pallin at 10% less for members.
3 layer vs 2.5 layer, although it uses their proprietary H2No instead of Gore-Tex.
A couple of reviews say it breathes a little better (as breathable as a waterproof hard-shell can, anyway) and feels less 'clammy' against the skin when you inevitably do start sweating inside it.
Drawback, hood doesn't fit over a helmet if that's something you require.
Weight is a bee's dick less 397g vs 411g, neither of which are lightweight, but it does pack into it's own pocket which you can clip onto a bag/belt/other, which the Calcite doesn't do
Also available in colours other than black, which is great if planning to use for ski/snowboard/cycling etc, where you want to be a little more visible.

Winter jacket on sale in spring?

    • +1

Makes perfect sense for a winter jacket to be on sale in spring, as demand drops and sellers would like to get rid of stock.

Now, this is in no way a winter jacket. It has no insulation.

    • +2

      Read the Title!
Its an rain jacket, not a warm winter jacket.

Where I am, torrential rains occur in summer, not winter. So a warm winter jacket would be terrible to wear then.

Instead, bought the marmot minimalist jacket for $128 with code BIRTHDAY10.

yo thanks mate, got one- not many sizes left.

I had been using Columbia watertight 2 bought few years ago for 100bucks - nylon material. Used it in the torrential storm/floods in Sydney, and it was really good, kept me dry while in very heavy rain. So had made up me mind to get a stronger quality rainjacket since the weather these days is becoming very flood focused rains and can be troublesome.

Will try this one out. Goretex and Patagonia, reckon is good combo, but a little on the pricey side. Cheers.
