As an Android user, I've been in the market for a luggage tracker and saw that the official Tile online store has the Mate 4 Pack on sale for $67.99 (RRP $139.90). Standard sipping is $9, with an estimate time of 5-7 days for VIC metro.

For reference, JB Hi-Fi sells the Mate 2 Pack for $69.95: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/tile-mate-bluetooth-track…

Plenty of other Tile exclusive bundles for sale featuring the Mate, Slim and Sticker: https://www.tile.com/en-AU/products/tile-exclusives

  • Odd they don't have the pro's?

    • Seem to be superhard to find in Australia at the moment. I think CostCo had them in a bundle a few weeks ago but I've had no luck finding them locally.

Note: these has non user-replaceable battery

Wait 3 year non-replaceable battery? So these just become landfill?

    • "Up to 3-year" - so, if you're lucky, depending on how long they've been on the shelf, and so on.

    • +1

      So these just become landfill?

Or you can join their Tile Premium Subscription Service ($4.99/m or $48.99/yr) for a free battery replacement hahaha

      • +5

        🤣🤣🤣

    • There are plenty of youtube videos showing you how to replace them (not that I have done it).

      • +2

I have done it and although Tile works, it now looks cr@p. I received a 4-pack Apple AirTag as a present a couple of months ago, I’m not an Apple fanboy but the Airtag works much better than the Tile as it doesn’t need a separate app to be installed(connects to any iPhone compared to Tile that can only be found if close to a phone that runs the Tile app in the background)

    • Just more reasons to buy AirTags lol

  • +10

    Non-replaceable battery? in 2022? Nope.

    • -1

You should be recycling your e-waste in 2022 anyway "¯_(ツ)_/¯ "
      https://www.tile.com/en-au/blog/how-to-recycle-your-tile-tra…

Most Officeworks stores have an e-waste recycling drop-off.

      • +7

So that justifies obsolescence ??? built to recycle repeat. GOOD GRIEF

        • -4

It's no different to the 2-year battery life of most smartphones. Dropped off 4 old phones for e-waste recycling recently "¯_(ツ)_/¯ "

I didn't realise I wasn't, but thanks for the clarification.

        Also, the complete point-missing.

Clearly you don't get out of the house enough to warrant the need to keep track of your items :)

    Planned obsolescence

I've been in the market for a luggage tracker

    Are you flying Jetstar?

    • My luggage didn't make it to my destination on a short-haul Qantas flight, actually.

      • -1

        Have you found it since?

  • +1

Do you need other people/devices to have the tile app on to locate them if they are not near you?

    • +1

Yes other people's devices need to have the app for it to work

      • Do they have stats on how many android users have the app installed?

        • +1

the app shows you how many active Tile members in your area.
e.g. 727 Tile users “near you” in Sylvania Waters

I have tried both Tile and AirTag, Airtag works much better, more iphones around to track it ;)

Unfortunately the whole range of Tile products Mate, Slim, Sticker are all "Up to 3-year non-replaceable battery".
The only reason that I can see to do this is for improved IPXX rating, but for me, this is a deal killer.
BUT according to CHOICE magazine Tile Mate came equal first with a 73% score out of 12 different bluetooth trackers.
It has "Very good range score".
Apple Air Tag came 11/12, it's range score was very low, it's only redeeming feature being
the large network of other Airtag users to assist in finding your Airtag.

    • +4

the large network of other Airtag users to assist in finding your Airtag.

Which is probably much more important if your item is lost and out of your range.

    • +2

The only reason that I can see to do this is for improved IPXX rating

Another reason would be to prevent children from opening and swallowing the batteries.

      • Yeah, good point, but that's usually overcome by having a tiny screw locking the battery in.

    • That is a deal killer, so much wastage created. They can easily create a better seal to make it water resistant. I have an old Photon keychain light. The battery compartment is sealed against water ingress and battery is user replaceable.

Unfortunately the whole range of Tile products Mate, Slim, Sticker are all "Up to 3-year non-replaceable battery".

Well that's just misinformation. I've got 4x Tiles with replaceable batteries that work perfectly fine and have for well over 3 years now.

      • +2

I was talking about the current range, not the superseded models.
You only need to click on the page supplied above, go down to the bottom of the page to see the list, they're all disposable.
Which unfortunately means your comment of "Well that's just misinformation" is itself misinformation!!

        • -3

Well then you should've stated that. "The whole range" does not immediately imply just the current range.

          • @Tacooo: Imagine, only talking about items you can buy, who could possibly have thought that.

  • Did Tile stop selling the tags with user replaceable batteries on their Australian website?. Cannot see the 'Pro'.

  • -1

why is everyone worrying about the non-replaceable battery? the reality is or the product design is YOU WILL LOSE IT BEFORE THE BATTERY DIES :) and not findable. or after a year, you wont remember you still have it on your key ring and your new mobile phone didnt have app on it…

    • I mean, a lot of people use it as a luggage tracker, and ~$70 is a small price to pay for peace of mind when travelling overseas. Lost luggage has become very common since air travel picked up again.

  • +1

Don't you need their subscription if you want to find it by others? At least that was the case few years back.
Meanwhile, I got the Airtags and can't complain (as much as I hate Apple). I could track my luggage quite accurately during my European trip.
For half the price, maybe for someone who does not have a single Apple device. Otherwise, the "normal" price on par with Apple is just ridiculous.

    • +2

I don't have a single Apple device "¯_(ツ)_/¯ " I have a Samsung phone, but Tile has a far better network than Samsung Galaxy SmartTags apparently.

You get some extra perks with the subscription, like free battery replacement and warranty, but you don't need to purchase it to use the Tile.

      • but Tile has a far better network than Samsung Galaxy SmartTags apparently.

Weird, I was in the market for an android tracker recently, and came to the opposite conclusion.

        ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • Given that SmartTags are tied to Samsung Galaxy devices, rather than Android devices as a whole, it's certainly a limitation. That, plus SmartTags' significantly shorter battery life.

  • At least airtags’ batteries (from the most anti consumer company) can be replaced

  • 4 and 2 packs are out of stock

  • I saw quite a few bad reviews of tiles. Its hard to locate it seems. No deal for me.

  • +1

So many comments criticizing this product and even down-voting it, but does anyone have a better alternative for tracking your luggage with Android? And reasonably priced

    • +1

Not really, the Tile with the replaceable battery would have been the better option. The battery is up to 3 years only. If it has been sitting on the shelf for a while or constantly activated in the pocket, the battery may only last between 1 to 2 years, then it becomes landfill.
