For a moment I thought this must do bone density given the "DEXA" in the description… but presumably x-rays are a bit more regulated than that. And not battery powered.

    • I was looking for a DEXASCAN earlier, apparently there is a regulatory issue in Australia and it's not available anymore. (https://www.dexamelbourne.com.au/)
I also saw a Jeff Nippard video where he did DEXA/BIA/Calipers/Ultrasound, and they're all inaccurate but useful as a means of tracking progress over time.

I've had a few DEXA scans from different places and I found that they didn't even agree with each other so it's not likely that they're objectively accurate. Probably the best you can hope for is to measure your progress on the same machine over time to track relative changes in body composition.

BTW, on the link that you sent it was possible to book a DEXA scan no worries - might have been a temporary issue?

Not that any of this is all that relevant to what looks like some battery powered bio-impedance scanner.

Yes, Dexascans should be taken on same machine using same software for comparison of results. Technician long ago told me just moving machine could change result. Hopefully the technology & accuracy has improved.

Over 8 years used same hospital machine in same room many times for BMD. Had follow up scan 10 years later (last month) on very different machine.

Report for that last result indicated the difficulty for comparison. Scans were taken of different bones, on different machines, analysed on different software. Could only say nothing much was very different in results (t & Z scores). I was also in a different age category for comparison!

And the statistics for population BMD norms by age & gender would have changed over that time.

          • @INFIDEL: I recall hearing something similar, which struck me as a little incongruous with the claim that DEXA scanning was the "gold standard!" of body composition tests.

            • @dudleydoright: Training of technician seems vital to achieve a valid outcome.

I participated in a University research study into effect of exercise on health.
A set of pre & post study full body Dexascans were taken on same machine to compare body composition. Was combined with other outcomes of stress testing etc.

That's very different to Bone Mineral Density scans, conducted at specific bone sites.

My specialist takes the BMD as a broad measure (healthy strong bones / not so heathy - Osteopenia / or unhealthy - Osteoporotic).
Comparison is based on norms for age & gender, to direct treatment. We're not directly comparing measurements but where my statistical scores are placed within the population. So extreme accuracy is not important.
The outcome was as expected & no treatment necessary. Next BMD scan in 10 years!

The other test result last week (CT Calcium Score - a CT scan of arteries), placed me as in amazingly better health than about 90% of same gender & age.
Am just (genetically) lucky! My Father's side of the family all had very serious heart problems.
It is used as predictor of Stroke in near future. My specialist was very happy! My bank balance wasn't as its fully funded by the patient.

For the people under 18 years old or over 65 years old, the product can only provide accurate measurement of weight.

You mean everyone in between too right?

  • I think these measure conductivity between your feet to "analyse" your body (in conjunction with what you entered for age, height, maybe waist size).
I have a Rephno similar one - it is OK but relying on the "analysis" may be a mistake…

    • So is this the same thing as body composition scales, like the Renpho?

      • I cannot see how it can be different.
        Same 4 segment touch pads.

  • For the people under 18 years old or over 65 years old, the product can only provide accurate measurement of weight

    What a waste machine

No proof it's at a dexa level

    • "Dad, can we get a DEXA scan?"
    • "We have DEXA scan at home."
      Scale at home: this one.

I worked 2 years as a DEXA technician for a clinic in Sydney and can attest that there's no way this scale is on the same level.

Bio impedance scales can be more accurate when they include handles like the ones you might find in gyms and health clubs (inbody brand), but even those are still not as accurate as a DEXA scan. It's like saying a magnifying glass is the same as a microscope.
