  • Hmm I bought it at launch for cheaper at $881 with free Samsung care with no trade in

    • This one is potentially much cheaper after taking into account further $300 discount

      • My bad. I thought $874.30 Less $300 Trade-in Credit meant $874.30 was the final price.

        Decent

Is the batter life still meh on the most current software? That's the one thing holding me back from upgrading from my S21…

    • +6

      S22
      Battery and camera are arse

      • +4

I can't say I've shared that experience. While the battery in my S22 doesn't match the endurance of my old A70, it's enough to get through most days, even with Battery Protect turned on (limits max. Charge to 85%), and it certainly doesn't fair any worse than the S21 I traded in.

Regarding the camera, there's no doubt it's reliably better in most conditions, provided one expects iteration and not revolution.

        • The battery life of the mid rangers will always be better, the lower tier chips consume far less power while offering about 50% of the graphics performance and 30% less for CPU intensive tasks. They also tend to come with larger capacity batteries to compete with the Xiaomi's of the world.

          • @AEKaBeer: My point was that I don't share the view that the smaller S22 "Battery and camera are arse". The camera is excellent in most conditions, and I would describe the endurance as to be expected for its size, albeit unimpressive.

Those after a smaller phone with better endurance might prefer Pixel 7 or iPhone SE; putting aside claimed battery capacity, both have significantly less processes to run out of the box since Samsung is running Samsung services, One UI and Samsung Cloud sync on top of Google Services out of the box.

With that said, savvy Samsung owners can optimise some settings to reduce the overhead of running two ecosystems simultaneously.

I bought one during the last Telstra day and the phone is great but the battery is horrible. One of my biggest regrets.

      • thanks for the feedback

        • +6

No problem. I have owned the phone for around over a month now and it's not fun having what I call 'battery anxiety' through the day. I have optimised the phone, taken away key features such as 120Hh, 5g, have the screen on low brightness, limited charge to 85% and put a ton of apps to deep sleep but I'm still only managing around 4-5 screen on time. I think I might go back to Telstra/Samsung to do some tests. What's the point of paying this much for a phone if you have to turn off half the features?

Anyway, good luck on choosing a phone. I came from an S8 which I think was one of the best phones I've owned coming from Apple prior.

          • @lilchonk: Thanks for your review. I have an S7, but think I might hold off on upgrading. Thanks.

          • +1

@lilchonk: Something must be wrong with your phone or the way you use it. I upgraded from s8 and battery last easily till the night. The s8 usually down to 20% after lunchtime regardless. This new one can easily last until the next morning with around 3h screen time.

            • @lgacb08: Same here, my experience has only been positive and I'm a relatively heavy phone user. Had mine since April pre-order and I always get at least 6 hours screen time - 5G on, 120Hz on, processing speed on optimised (default), background usage limits on, adaptive battery on, power saving off, always-on display off, dark mode on. This is how I set every phone.

              • @Techie4066: That's astounding that you get 6 hours with 5G and 120Hz on. I'm going to get mine swapped and see if it helps in that case. I have all the same settings as you, but with those two turned off. I'm lucky if I get 4 hours in a day.

                • @bobswinkle: Let us know how you go with the swap - keen to see how the new one fares, best of luck!

          • +2

@lilchonk: Just a thought, there isn't much point using the 85% battery saver if you are burning though your entire battery anyway. You just don't want your device sitting at > 85% for long periods of time, and it sounds like there's no chance of that happening. Turn it off and use the extra 15%.

I have a S21+ and I use the battery saver mon-fri because I never get below 25% on those days when I start at 85%. But on weekends I turn battery saver off (I have a Bixby routine that turns it on/off automatically) because I use my phone more and burn though more battery and sometimes get to below 20% before I recharge. Remember that being at < 15% for a long period of time is just a "damaging" for your battery as being > 85%.

          • @lilchonk: There aren't many small phones getting more screen on time than that. However, it's worth ensuring you aren't running more sync-related background tasks than necessary, too.

For example, if you in camp Google as your preferred ecosystem, turn off Samsung cloud features since they're largely overlapping; if you prefer Samsung cloud services, turn off the Google features you don't use or need, if you haven't already.

I haven't turned off any of the featured you mentioned and I usually get through a normal day. Hopefully the tests reveal the cause for you!

      • +1

Regrettably my experience is the same as yours. I got a ripper deal, Xbox and they price matched. Almost a free upgrade after I sold my old Pixel 5. But I still have regrets because the battery is bloody awful.

    • +3

Get a plus. Battery is amazeballs.

    • +1

There used to be a bug where you can turn on 120hz and power saving at the same time. Gave the s21 decent battery, but it's all fixed now :(

    • +8

Return my S22 after a week.
Battery life was significantly worse than my 2 YO phone. Gets <4 hr SOT.
Literally can see the battery percentage drop IRL as I watch youtube.
      My speculation for poor SOT
      -Reduced mAh compared to S21.
-Flagship snapdragon <-fancy this being a disadvantage.
-Overheating - phone get warm from general use, heats up very quick when taking videos.
Hacks I used to prolong battery life (~1 hour extra SOT)
Dark mode, remove bloatware, disable background app aggressively, battery saver mode (phone becomes laggy).
I even got Samsung rep to remotely diagnose my phone to observe battery discharge rate. The Samsung rep recommended a swap/refund.
It was ridiculous for an average user to adjust settings/usage patterns for the phone to last a whole day.
To conclude, I started to develop a phobia of running of battery on a flagship range phone, so I returned it.

      • +1

You must be related to JV.

Anyway, what you experienced doesn't sound like the norm. Not surprised the rep recommended a swap/refund. I'm sure other people have had this experience with other brands and models as well.

Disclaimer: Not a fanboy/fangirl. I say this as someone who would much rather an LG or Sony phone, and has never owned a Samsung.

        • Nah they're pretty common experiences if you go to the S22Galaxy subreddit there's discussion about the battery life and all sorts of ongoing issues around over heating and things. I have an S22 and have to take away flagship things to even get an okay output of 4-5 screen on time. I love the phone but the battery life is just terrible. I would basically have battery anxiety all day :(

          • +1

@lilchonk: Heating definitely isn't normal and I'd suggest anyone experiencing heating should do a reset and re-install their apps manually, not via Smart switch or from a backup. I've found that to be very effective in sorting out heating and battery use issues. It's almost always due to dodgy apps that don't re-install properly when coming from a different device.

If that doesn't solve it, I'd suggest you have a faulty device, but that would be unlikely.

        • Not related to JV, just been on OZB long enough and got influenced.
I'd done two factory resets and OTA updates, no difference.

          • @ruthlesskid: Did you have the issue after factory resetting, before installing anything?

If not, did you check each of your installed apps for wakelocks or similar behaviour?

            • @NobalaKoba: I noticed the poor battery right after unbox, lost ~20% from setting up the phone.
First reset after two days, kept it running for another few days, no change from SOT.
Last reset and full update, kept the phone for almost a week, suffered battery anxiety the whole time.
I aggressively turned off the background app settings and installed accubattery.

@NobalaKoba: I loved my LGV50 and Xperia phones.
RIP LG, Wish Sony still sells phone here.

      • In my opinion, Samsung peaked with the S10 series. Since then their premium range S20,21 and 22 have shown lots of evidence of corner cutting and sloppy hardware-software integration. 'Tis a pity.

Perhaps the Z-fold is now their premium line?

  • what happens if you dont send the old phone in?

    • They will charge your cc or debit card

Value of the trade in phone plus $60 admin fee

        • So the trade in device value xancels out, but you still save due to $350 voucher being more than the $60 admin fee ($290 saving)?

          • +1

@CheapBrah: According to the Samsung FAQs, "If you do not to return your device in 7 days , you will be automatically charged the value of the trade-in value plus a $60 (AUD) administration fee. Samsung may also charge you for any additional bonus credit which was applied to your order."

            • +1

@code695: The last sentence wasn't previously in T&C. Looks like it's newly added 😂

              • @b0b0: It was but it was worded differently. It was "may also charge you for any additional discount that was applied at the checkout" or something.

        • Bought 4 devices already and have never sent anything back. Recently just got an email saying they're charging the value of the phone I was suppose to send ($20). Never got slugged with the admin fee

    • I recently got email for S21 I bought during September 2021.

      • Me too

        • Me too. Got charged tho.

        • But i cant remember if they charged me last year. Will check..

      • Same, got the 'whoops we forgot' email on the 24th of August telling me to return the device within 7 days (which I chose to keep) or be charged the trade-in credit. Got a final reminder on the 5th of September saying that they'll charge my card for the trade in device value as they hadn't received it. Still waiting for them to charge me…

        • It's a joke, there's no way I'd send a device back for an order made 10 months or a year ago.

          • +1

@Techie4066: Yeah I sold my old device within a few weeks of receiving my S21, so I didn't have anything to return anyway.

  • Hmm Samsung quote $160 trade-in for my phone, JB Hi-Fi quote $200

    • Buy at Samsung is cheaper than jb

      • Oh yeah but I don't have an education login, otherwise definitely!

        • +2

I can help you out with that if you can help me out on a new Toyota deal! :P

    • what phone is it?

  • I just need an edu email
Or use the deal at Optus/HN. Both high quality operators.

    Anything on S22 Ultra??

    • Updated deal with S22 ultra

      • +1

Thanks mate, so essentially 20% off plus trade in value right?

        • So 1479 - $350 - (trade in value of your phone)

    No love for ultra ?

    • Updated deal with S22 ultra

  • 3700mah battery pfftttt

    • +1

That's exactly why there's a plus model my bro

$130 trade offer for samsung s10 plus 512gb ceramic is bullshit.

    • +1

These deals are all about the trade in bonus, I believe majority of us don't send the phone in

  • Is there a way to access this without having student email id? Like Lenovo education store?

  • Trade-in credit? how to apply, when i enter the ID it just give trade in value discount and no additional 300/350 credit

    • +1

Are you definitely in the correct store?

      • +2

yup, seems like trade in credit is only for s22 and plus model, no love for ultra :(

        • I tried S22 and I am not getting any 300 credit after entering the trade in code

        • Seems , I tried as well for ultra but not getting any bonus trade in credit

  • +2

The ultra isnt on 30% off, so really shouldnt be in as a deal, its normally this $ on edu and gvt store

    • The edu store doesn't normally offer this trade in bonus. It's definitely a deal.

      • Ive been watching it (ultra) price its not a deal imho the ultra. And the trade in prices are lol bad, can get double on ebay, so trade in isnt a reason to make it deal worthy. Ultra was 1299 2 weeks ago before and trade in.

        • The trade bonus

          • @wombat81: I can't see a trade in bonus for the ultra

            • @NinjaGamer: Looks like it was a mistake and samsung have now pulled the deal

              • @wombat81: the trade in bonus offer for the s22+ is still on the website for me theirs an astrix on the price.

                • @NinjaGamer: Gone for me. I'd guess it won't work and if you log back in it'll be gone.

                  • @wombat81: Just logged back in and it's still showing where the atrix on the price is

                    • @NinjaGamer: Yeah I see, but it says it ends on 10.08.2022. It's also gone from the banner. Can't see it actually going through.

        • The deal is with the trade in bonus not your trade in value

Of course your old phone is gonna worth more….
The fact that they are willing to give you $300+ trade-in bonus kind of indicate they may make $300+ from the phone you're trading in ;)

  • +1

Not taking the 300 off on 22 now. Trade in s10e offering $50. So should be $524 but just taking 50 off

  • good deal. shame that I don't have any phone eligible for a trade up

    • -1

      'borrow' your wife's or sibling's

      • yeh thought about that but all have latest phones (14 pro, fold4, flip4 etc) which isn't eligible except for the little guy with a31, which is not eligible either.
EDIT: looks like bonus credit is gone, so couldnt have done it anyway.

        • tip: you could put your phone as screen broken etc which would greatly reduce the value of these latest phones

(I once tried a latest iphone mini but with broken screen, the value went from $400 to $10)

  • +1

Has anyone been successful with this? The website shows the offer ending 10.08.2022 and the bonus credit isn’t working for me.

  • bonus credit didn't work for me also

  • Can someone please tell me if I run the Samsung trade-in app on a phone to get a trade-in ID will it delete all the data, etc? Thanks for any advice.

    • No it doesn't do anything, just generates a trade in ID.

  • wait is this already expired?

    • -1

looks like bonus credit isn’t being applied, so phones are marked down by 30% - the value of your trade in. (no bonus credit)

    • I think it was a screw up

      • showed up for me on the education site when posting this deal, very weird.

        • Yeah I saw the banner. It was definitely there, but gone now. I think someone at samsung stuffed up.

          • @wombat81: Still showing me the banner but not working
