Got these for $399 a couple months ago but this seems the cheapest they are at the moment. Absolutely love mine. Have enough inputs for what i need and they sound amazing for the price. They are large though. Also seem to be on sale at catch too.

  • Worth upgrading from 2 year old 1280DB (?) or nah?

I’d rate mine 8-9/10, but after better. Edifier have been amazing quality and value wise.

    • +2

These are leaps and bounds better than the 128DB in my opinion. Definitely a step up in clarity and volume too. Just note that they are big!

      • Okay cool. Yep planning on getting a new desk, so might grab some new speakers too. Exciting!

        • You probably need to factor that you should put them a little away from the wall too. I'm no audio expert but i know they need a little space.

          • +1

@krammis76: This! We recently painted our loungeroom wall and in doing so, our S3000Pro's that normaly sit ~15cm away from the wall were in the middle of the room for entertainment while we painted. The difference was not only noticable, but it was quite surprising at how much better they sounded at both low and high volumes. I'm now looking into acoustic foam to place behind them to try and mimic the 'middle of the room' effect / eliminate echo as it's not practical for that much spacing with the current layout.

            • +2

@MrKnowItAll: If you can get them 1 foot from the wall that should de-muddy the bass reflex port (twice the length of the port generally does the trick). Foam behind won't do a thing because you would need metres thick to have any influence on the bass, and because the high frequencies are directional foam is better at the reflection point.

        • These are very big for a desk, and I would say more suited to TV or just music speakers in a room. However if you have the space, you might still be able to position these correctly and enjoy their awesome sound.

Enough with the RRP nonsense. At no point in the camels history have these ever come remotely near that.

  • I have these and they are fantastic speakers.

  • Are these better in terms of sound quality than the JBL 305P?

    • +3

I imagine they're in a similar class. I suspect the Edifier may have a better low-end with the JBL being better at highs/clarity.

JBLs are more studio reference right?

As an owner of the S3000Pros, if they're anything like the smaller sibling, they're definitely fun to listen to, but I wouldn't say they're 'studio monitors'.

If you already own the JBLs, this won't be an upgrade (side-grade at best), if you're tossing up between which to buy, not sure sorry. Haven't personally listened to either. (I do love my S3000pros though)

    • I face the same conundrum every time I see a deal for the S2000/3000 lol.

    • The JBL are a balanced pro speaker - they are a whole different league - not really a comparison - most people would need IMT from an unbalanced domestic output so there’s extra gear to consider. I’ve never heard the JBL 305P MkII so can comment on sound but look like studio reference monitors from the specs and controls on the back.

Even says “ 305P MkII 5" Powered Studio Monitor” in the manual

Always been a fan of JBLand Sennheiser but each to their own. They only have to please your ears.

      Just MHO.

    • worse for sure

  • +2

Agreed! I’ve wanted these speakers for ages but $499 was about the cheapest I saw either from Centrecom or Amazon. Maybe it was a bit cheaper, but this is a bargain. Dammit I just spent a bunch of money with Amazon during Sennheiser week, just wish they had those Momentum 4 on special.

These speakers support aptX HD but not apt LL according to the specs. Not sure what the DACs are like but sounded good to me.

I need to set up a BT Wireless headphone which has the aptx Low Latency codec. So many wireless HP don’t support this but your BT transmitter needs to support it as well so I got the Sennheiser BT100. Plus a bunch of supporting cables and stuff cleaned me out.

I’ve listened to these to these speakers n a shop with music and a movie and it did a pretty good job, and I have to say for less than $500 it’s a pretty amazing sound but yeah they are big, and definitely give them some space against the wall.

They are still excellent all rounders though I would like a bit of extra bass from a Sub but these almost don’t need one. But a separate sub would definitely add if you are a bass freak. Shame EQ controls aren’t on the remote.

Decide what you are going to listen to before you buy them - Edifier have a range of different models to suit different listening needs and read the reviews - they are are beyond just computer speakers, these rival a midrange bookshelf system which there aren’t that many around any more certainly not with BT and built in DACs but it has enough inputs for most devices.

For gaming and using BT, I suggest looking into devices that support the Qualcomm aptX Low Latency transmitter and receiver if you are want stuff in sync - I haven’t seen them perform much via BT myself, I try and cable where ever possible.

I’m setting mine wireless TV HP LL up for a friend, who I now wish would have paid me up front, to get him in the best possible “sync TV and Movies”and I found the Sennheiser transmitter and some of their wireless headphones were the only reliable method according to reviewers on Amazon.

Momentum 4 blew the budget so the cheaper 450SE hopefully will do.

I doubt anyone would be unhappy with the Edifier S2000MKIII (depending on what you are listening too) and this is a killer price, just make sure you have the room to set them up and get some decent analogue cables to feed them or better still, feed them with Digital via Toslink or Coax (decent sub single RCA Male to Male would be fine). Not enough mobo’s have digital out, you may end up getting a card or a USB adaptor if you are going that way.

I’d expect the cheaper price might mean a newer model on the way but you’d expect everyone to have them on sale but that isn’t the case.

    [edit]
Forgot to mention the faux wood grain finish looks nice as opposed to boring black.

Hope this mini review and potential use case might help out a fellow OzBargainer whether to pull the trigger or not.

  • This better than a sound bar in similar price bracket. I.e does it have good centreing?

    • +1

Typically a soundbar is designed for TV and Movies and often comes with a sub because the speakers are often small. The soundbar is going to do a better job of being a centre channel as it’s designed to keep speech to the centre. You can’t really compare a pair of Stereo bookshelf speakers with a soundbar.

I’ve heard some impressive soundbars at stupidly high prices which often are made by the TV Manufacturers to suit the overall look.

Any bookshelf speakers are going to give you much better mid-range but without a decent bass driver they often lack the bass people want for action films.

I spent over 5K in the mid 2000’s on a 5.1 system with a 10” driver in the sub with a 250W amp and yeah it’s was a lot but I still use them and I can shake the house with the sub without trying too hard but neighbours get a bit annoyed.

They are showing their age, but I can’t afford another 5K to replace them, though I might not have to. Speaker Tech has come a long way in nearly 20 years. But you’ll find people who swear by something from the 70s or 80s.

Honestly I don’t understand soundbars myself unless they have wired or wireless rears.

The minimum soundtrack you are going to get is 2.0, but typically streaming US stuff is 5.1 and plenty of movies are 7.1 should you buy the disc or get HD Audio download, but add Atmos and you might end up with a 7.2.4 configuration but you need a good AVR to drive it. The Denon X4500H was the only thing I could afford, the X8500H would have been my idea choice but at $6K it was way out of my price range.

EAC-3 audio is typical on most streamers but the discs come with full HD audio which is chalk and cheese.

If all these terms are baffling, ignore me and get whatever sounds best to you but a set of stereo bookshelf speakers might not be the best thing to replace a soundbar unless it’s cheap rubbish if you are into surround sound at least.

“Acceptable sound” vs “quality sound” can be many thousands of dollars difference. You have to decide what you will accept and can afford. You only have to please yourself and maybe the missus.

      • I have a pair of x-ls encore book shelf speakers that I use in my living room at the moment to function primarily for listening to music (high quality streaming and LPs). But also have hooked up to the tv for when watching movies and the centreing is really really good on them. But the problem is I'm thinking of moving these speakers into another room for my music production along with their amp so hence was looking at these as a replacement. And I too have never been interested in a sound bar. But not need to buy another amp and all other bits and bobs makes a sound bar or something like this much more affordable.

Basically just want to hear people's experiences in pairing lower consumer level bookshelf speakers with a tv.

      • Not into surround sound. Never understand the hype of having a 7.1 setup. My current 2.1 set up is awesome. Plus I hate trying to sort out placing and wiring rear speakers (Bluetooth is crap). Dolby Atmos and all that is marketing BS in my opinion. A quality wired set up is ageless.

      • thoughts on the edifier s3000pros then?

  • +2

How do these compare to the other model that was up recently from Amazon that had the sub? (S360DB)

  • Can the coax be used as a sub-out or is that input only?

  • Great speakers. It does the boom boom dooft dooft good.

  • If only they made ceiling speakers

  • It's a crying shame there's no sub-out on this range.

  • I use DSP to play a dual subs with S3000pro, rocks my world. The only problem is, edifier support sucks for their premium brands. If you run into a problem you'd find out. Don't invest heavily in this cheap Chinese brand. It can break any time and edifier would not back you up.

  • Bought these a few months back and loving them. Primarily for music (paired with my Topping E30ii) but also for when I watch movies. Wayyyy better than my 3.1.2 Soundbar. There's a setting in Kodi which helps boost the audio if you need it.

  • I own S3000 Pro's bought them on sale from Ebay for $540 few months back. these are the best for buck.

  • Price gone up tp $450.

Are these a decent alternative (not looking for loudness just quality and clarity) for $350 :
