Before anyone ask, these can be used in the PS5.

    • +9

RichardL can you please confirm if these can be used in the PS5?

      • +7

Are they compatible with the PS5 … Richard??

    • +2

Nice. You can currently upgrade your XBox Series X by 2TB for $625 on Amazon.

    • Before anyone else asks: removing the heatsink voids warranty.

  • +29

Did not need this so only bought 1

    • +2

Don't think twice, or you might buy 2

      • +3

Yep that's why i didn't even think once - just bought

  • +14

An excellent SSD for PS5, just a heads up though before anyone buys it for console use:

    • If you want optimal speeds, it's best to update the firmware of the SSD via PC - for this you will need a dedicated secondary PCIe SSD slot. Laptops may not cut it.
    • the Samsung Application to update SSD firmware won't recognise USB adapters or external PCIe enclosures, so before buying adapters check reviews for specific compatibility.
    • +4

Was reading through the reviews on Amazon and someone said that it's manufactured in 2022 so no need for the firmware update.

      • +3

Received mine from this deal a few months ago, and Production Date was Feb 2022.

      • That's correct. The one from the last deal had updated firmware 4B2… but, I had a computer store tech put 5B2 on. A negligible bump in speed - with PS5 telling me it was 6646Mb/sec after formatting. Should be fine to drop straight into the PS5 even with the 4B2 firmware.

Many YouTube vids and online reviews just haven't used/tested the 2Tb with heatsink versions, so that's why they recommend the firmware upgrade (which yes, is a pain if you don't have the hardware to do it).

    • I update the firmware on mine using my 2017 xiaomi air 13 laptop using samsung's firmware update via usb boot

      • If it's via USB boot, what adapter / enclosure do you use?

        • +3

No I chuck the SSD in the main slot in the laptop and download the firmware as a bootable USB option and boot straight to the Samsung flash tool

  • +3

Good that I don't have Ebay Plus and Prime membership… otherwise I would have buy these components that I don't actually need right now.

  • -2

    HOLD.
They're trying to get rid of stock before the PCIe5 drives come out.

    • +3

PCIe5 drives will be great but also in their own special, expensive, hot and needs careful attention paid to cooling category. The increased performance will not be worth it for everyone and these are a lot simpler to deal with.

      • +6

That and games barely use PCIE4 as is (on PC).

By the time they do, PCIE4 / 5 drives will be a lot cheaper.

    • Which model is that? The Samsung 990 pro will still be PCIE4 like the 980, double the iops though which is nice 😊

  • +1

What is the production date cutoff without needing to upgrade firmware for PS5?

  • +2

    Can JB price match this?

    • +3

You could try, but it will be dependent on the employee as these are technically not local stock.

  • +1

The 2tb is about $10 higher than historical low on 30th August. A very good price.

  • +1

Recently had a 2tb 970 evo samsung ssd fail, which was purchased from amazon us.

Tried to rma with samsung, was told that the serial number doesnt come up as an australian delivered model and that they cant help.

    • Did you try going through Amazon?

      • Amazon only has a 30 day return policy, but i haven't tried yet
        Purchased in August

        • +7

I think that's for change of mind, for failed drive they surely offer a warranty policy.

Pretty sure as the seller they're required to under consumer law here, even for grey imports. Could be mistaken, maybe others have experience here.

          • @snoopydoop: Gave Amazon a call, said they'd contact the appropriate team and I'll get a call back within 48 hours.
            Not very hopeful

            • +3

@bart2: pretty sure they will have to. They are the agent. and its not fit for purpose. Statutory warranty should force them to cover it
              Push hard.

    • +1

Just send it back tk Amazon

  • Is it caused by the sinking pound? Thanks god, AUD sinks slower.

    • +3

No, they drown each other ( inc. Euro) as lapdogs of the US

      • 'lapdogs'!

        lol

We have to be lapdogs of some power - we have no choice in the matter. So do you want to be a lapdog of the US or China? It's one or the other.

        • +2

The smart play is to balance between them, like India does between Russia and the USA, or Singapore does between the USA and China.

Both sides have to be wary of pushing you offside into the arms of the other.

Just have to be careful not to get coup’d by one side or the other.

          • @DustyAfternoon: Might want to add NZ in this list.

            • +1

@MITM: NZ’s leaning more US-wards, but yeah it’s doing a better job than Aus for sure.

It got a bit of scolding from the US last year, but no one’s waged a trade war with it.

              • @DustyAfternoon: China is not waging a trade war with NZ because Jacinda Ardern has bowed to China's authority.

                • +1

@R4: Huawei’s banned, and the two major parties kicked out their two MPs with Chinese backgrounds. The government has condemned China’s approach in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. It continues to host Five Eyes spy bases and launch US military satellites.

This puts NZ about on par with your average European country. It makes the right noises for keep the USA happy, but it doesn’t try to lead the charge.

          • @DustyAfternoon: True. Best to be agnostic & independent.
Don't annoy your neighbors as it's the (lap)dogs that are punished (poisoned) 1st (warning to what might come if the bullying continues).
If I'm forced to give priority to 1 side then it'll be QUIETLY China as NEIGHBOUR & the new world leader vs falling imperial bully & creator of chaos ;)
China is also neutral in action (not wish) in the global crisis/war of the US against Russia, so we (the world) should suffer less this EU winter & beyond.
It also provides most of our resources for living. If that supply chain fails, we are doomed.

    • AUD has actually fallen against the GBP in the last 2 weeks!

  • Damn, even cheaper than the Seagate I bought recently that I haven't received yet.

I think the Seagate is better, but probably not noticeable in a PS5, which is what I'm planning on using it for

    • and this has a heat sink.

      • The Seagate I bought has a heatsink as well. I paid $345

        • Both are very good deals. That deal was a bit more $ for a bit better performance (and endurance).

          • +1

@B3: Yeah the endurance is massive on the Seagate

  • I got one from the last sub $300 deal. If you are on the fence I highly recommend it. I don't know stuff about things and installation was a piece of p#$s for me. Works perfectly in the family PS5.

  • i'm building a new pc, should i buy one 2tb ssd or go for two of the 1tb ssd? I'm scared of buying the 2tb ssd putting all my games and files in the same boot single boot drive. I will have a NAS drive for every other bulky files like videos/photos/backup etc.

    • +2

      get a 2tb one

      • Cheers, purchased the 2tb one. Also I noticed this samsung ssd has a "heatstink" but my motherboard model "MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI" has an included "heatshield", is this the same thing? Do I need to remove the motherboard's included "heatshield" when I install my ssd since the SSD already comes attached with a heatsink?

        • You'll have to remove the heatsink when installing regardless if your SSD comes with one. In your case you do not need to put the mobo one back on, but you can swap them according to your preference I suppose

        • Speaking as someone who made this mistake last time this model was on sale: you need a heatsink-less SSD. Otherwise you run into problems fitting it into the motherboard. You might be able to have it fit if you leave the motherboard heat shield off (aesthetics aside) but no guarantee.

Removing the heatsink from the SSD is a pain in the ass. It requires one of those special star shaped screwdrivers, and voids the warranty.

I ended up selling my heatsink one for a profit, and just buying a heatsink-less one at Australian rates.

(It also takes ages to ship, in case you were hoping for a quick turnaround.)

          • @DustyAfternoon: Mate you're a life saver. Just cancelled my order. I was staring at the picture of this SSD for ages thinking how tf is this thicc thing gonna fit. I installed a few M2 ssd's like 7 years ago and didn't remember any of them coming with a heatsink attached so I was pretty confused. Not really keen on voiding warranties either.

          • +1

@DustyAfternoon: Are the heatsink ones intended for PS5s only? Surely you can install a heatsink SSD in a PC?

            • +1

@thisusernameistaken: If you look at images of the heatsink, it wraps around the bottom of the ssd as well. Since you have to screw down M2 ssd's onto the motherboard, that was my main concern of putting excess pressure on the connector if I didn't remove the heatsink. Don't want to risk anything so I just cancelled my order. Heatsink-less ssd's seem to be almost the same price as this discounted one, plus I can get local stock/warranty instead of waiting 3 weeks for Amazon UK shipping.

            • @thisusernameistaken: Absolutely you can. The information above is incorrect.

          • @DustyAfternoon: Not true.

2TB 980Pro's fitted perfectly on both my MSI B550M Pro and either M.2 slot on my Gigabtyte Aorus X570 with their heatsinks intact.

They are designed to fit and comply with the form factor standards. For any motherboard that includes a heatsink, you simply unscrew it when fit your drive in the mounting mechanism.

  • No heatsink on the 1TB …..not sure if people are after 2TB for PS5 or 1TB for PC C: drives ….. 1TB with heatsink would would be sweet for 12th gen Intel …..

    • There is a heatsink that comes with the 1TB model and the 2TB model.

      • oops my bad separate link for 1TB heatsink :-(

        • no worries, let me know if you need help at all.

        • bought one :-)

  • Cheapest 2tb I see is $355 sans heatsink.

    • +1

      looks to be OOS now.

  • +1

Not in desperate need but this deal was too good to pass up. Thanks OP, looking forward to not having to shuffle PS5 games between the internal and ext. HDD storage to be able to play them.

  • Bugger I was signing up for the prime trial and got a phone call, opened it back up and now its gone
EDIT: 1TB still available so grabbed that. Working on a new build atm so thanks OP

  • Booooo my 2tb order was cancelled by the seller :(

  • I bought a 1tb but wasn't sure if it would be that useful. Is this good to use as a games drive? Currently using a2000 for boot drive

  • I bought one my ps5, would I need to install the latest firmware?

    • +2

production date should be February 2022. So no.

  • +1

removing the heatsink voids warranty?? how hard to remove?

  • My other half tried to order one of these when they were in stock but then once the order went through and was confirmed, she got a follow up email saying that the order had been cancelled. Not honoring the price it was up for? Pricing error?

  • Purchased the 2tb version for $371 via Centrecom last week. Got a PS5 almost 2 months ago and FINALLY decided to start using it 3 weeks ago.

Having upgraded the hdds in the ps3 and ps4 over the years I was prepared for anything (stupidly stripped the screws on the ps3 drive caddy lol, ps4 was far less problematic). The process for the ps5 was very easy to follow along with the Sony official video.

The Amazon price was a bargain! And certainly much cheaper than JBs asking price ($689 lol).

  • wow thats a good price! I still have my 2tb 980 pro in my ps5 been there since 2021 works so well.

  • +1

Hi can any one share the link for 2TB one.
    TIA.

  • I own a Dell G15 5520 gaming laptop that will take PCIE Gen4 M.2 SSD's. Would this fit being a gaming laptop so thicker than average laptops?
If it doesn't fit, is the heatsink removable? I understand performance will be impacted in heavier usage if the heatsink is removed.
