  • It's disappointing to see storage companies shy away from MLC. I understand why consumer grade SLC doesn't exist but surely we can't keep going backwards. I'd rather get a velociraptor than a qlc ssd

    • +1

Yeah. I'd go a MX500 for ~$50 more if I wanted it to last.

      • Are you looking for 30 year service life or something ?

These offer way way more endurance than a "normal" home user will ever need.

Just looking at the closest server to me right now, the OS has been running 24/7 for the past 5 years - total power on hours for the OS SSD is 1782 days and 20 hours.

This server does plenty of things 24/7 - and the total drive writes to the OS SSD in the past five years, totals just 20.87TB.

The 1.92TB drive in this deal has a TBW rating of 800TB !

Lifespan of these budget drives is absolutely not an issue for "normal" use.

    • TLC is the best value option. (2-bit) MLC hasn’t been used in consumer drives for a long time. QLC is crap but for a cheap storage drive that you occasional writes and mostly reads (like a game drive), it’s fine for the price

I'd rather get a velociraptor than a qlc ssd

That's just stupid, the old velociraptor drives are many times slower at random access than even the crappiest SSD.

See my other post just above - the rated lifespan of these budget drives is still way way more than a normal user will ever need.

If you have a specific niche high-write usage in mind, then you know that you need to buy a drive that isn't this one…

  • Thanks OP,just what I'm after for the laptop.

    • Lucky you, my laptop has nvme

      • Same here. This is just the second drive, along with a 512GB Samsung card.

  • Damn, was gonna bite but dram-less…

  • Would the be good for a PS4 pro?

    • I’d get something better quality. MX500 is probably the best option

    • I'd get this because it's cheap, and it's a great choice for a gaming drive. It'll pair just fine with a PS4 Pro.

You won't really gain anything by choosing a higher class of drive…

  • Cheers might bite
