Check Your Shoes Are Non Slip, I Had a Nasty Fall

I had some old sketchers I was wearing even though I had bought several new shoes. I slipped on wet leaves, fell backwards and landed on my elbow. I couldnt get up as my arm was broken. There was a tree nearby I held on and was able to stand up. I am now out of action for 6 to 8 weeks, cant drive or recycle or anything

I swear to God almighty that if you try Volleys, you won't have this problem. I'm not sure if the more modern designs have the same soft rubber herringbone design on the sole, compared to the original flexible shoe design. Worth having a look at BigW or elsewhere who has retail stock.

@Oofy Doofy: I agree re flexible soles. I find thick stiff soles do sometimes catch, and flexible soles much better at working with the small movements off the foot in terms of balance.

If God had intended for us to wear shoes, He would have given us feet. So au naturel is really the… wait a minute…

  • I hate breaking bones and not being able to recycle!

      You can’t unscramble an egg

  • Gonna Cry?!

  • Had this happen to me a few times in different situations.

Wet line markings in carparks and thongs don't mix.

Soft blow molded shoes that you see at big W and the likes don't fare will when on wet surfaces

  • Owned few crocs loafers. Ridiculously poor grip on rainy days when walking on melbourne cbd pavements or so. I’m now using sketches and they are really good ✌️

  • These look like they could be a goer.

    • eek ….they look like part of KANYE & DERRICK ROSE'S YEEZY COLLAB

    • Are slippers for people who like to slide? Does one wear a pair of slippers, or does wear one slipper and one gripper for maximum versatility?

Op may have osteoporosis and is senior judging by how bones are so brittle like peanut candy brittle

    • Who knew that growing old could be so delicious?!

  • When shoe soles become smoothie one must not hoard these.

    • A shoe sole smoothie? It’s probably fibre, but the wrong kind of fibre

  • Can you click your mouse or feed the chooks?

  • You will notice some people walk more towards their heels than flat footed or on their toes, in a slippery situation like op's, it will cause them to fall even easier. If its wet, flat footed and being really situationally aware is the best prevention.

The production has a bare-bones budget, yet the material continues to be fresh and original

You poor thing. Rest up and take care of yourself. I had a nasty fall like this due to slipping on a tiny puddle of water on some tiles whilst in some wedge heel flats, I have been very careful of what shoes I wear ever since - as well as slip hazards.

Ended up breaking my elbow badly and was in a cast for 8 weeks, then 5 months of physio to regain full movement in my arm. I was in my 20s and was glad I wasn't any older. Having a baby in nappies at the time was a bit of a nightmare but thankfully my mum lived nearby and helped out.

  • As a faithful OZber Ive tried roughing up the soles with coarse sandpaper rather than throw out otherwise functional shoes. Works OK and definitely improves grip but just like old tyres they really should be replaced.
The exception is something like a nice pair of RMs where its worthwhile getting them resoled.

  • Good luck with the surgery

  • I dont buy sketches anymore, I dont know if i was given fake sketchers or not but i paid a lot of coin for them. Got 2 pairs. And the soles were like plastic. It had the look of a grippy sole but it seemed to never wear down or actually grip anything. I had many falls with them and then realised its not the surfaces i was walking on but the shoes as it only ever happened with those shoes. There was one time where i was on my bro's driveway, I slipped and fell and got back up took 2 steps and slipped and fell again. It was like i was in some slapstick sitcom… I couldnt believe i was falling so easily. Thats when i started to look at the sole and realised theres something wrong with my sketches and both pairs had the same issue.

I bought them from Catch, so i wonder if i was sold fakes.

But I do also wonder if there is more and more cheaper surfaces being put down or installed as i have noticed even with other shoes (mainly old crocs where the sole had worn down quite a bit) i do have some slippery experiences usually like certain type of fancy tiles / pavements on the pedestrian footpaths around some councils or buildings. Saying that, i never had as bad experiences as my sketchers.

Please don’t purchase your sketches in Chinatown anymore. Try David Jones

Avoid wearing skinny jeans or drain pipe trousers wear comfortable bell bottoms

Your shoes are fine, they gripped the leaf.

The leaf didn't grip the ground.
We need more non slip leaves.

I am still wearing a pair of Skechers that are about 6 years old with no grip on the bottom. I haven't broken my arm. Perhaps you just need to be more careful and watch where you're walking.

they get you when you are not expecting it. i was bringing in washing

      • I slipped on wet leaves

        .

        i was bringing in washing

So the root cause was you….

        • Actually, the root cause is probably the washing machine. Or, you know, just dirt in general. Unless you mean that the root cause is body odour, in which case those living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones

  • screensaver: I slipped on wet leaves

Generally sketchers have no rubber soles. They don't even have soles. They are just foam in patterns. Intially grip is pretty poor esp when wet, and when it hardens in time it becomes even worse. Avoid the brand

    • Skechers shoes are soulless too.

Sorry to hear that, wish you a speedy recovery Pam.
