Neon Playground by Chinatown……putting RGB lights on a 10 year old PC
"woohoo it's new, check it out!"

    • i don't get it

You haven't been to the computer stores in Haymarket recently, I presume?

        • +1

No but I get the picture now

      Razor "I take it personally!"

    • we need a ozbargainer carpark gathering

    • my partner looked at the display setup in Dixon St and said it looked like a Chinese funeral

I said maybe it's celebrating the death of COVID restrictions … ?

  • Ah, perfect to go to the Paddy's Market!

    • Ah, perfect to go to the Paddy's Market!

What for? It's all just Ali Express but with much less range and extra markup. I guess you don't have to wait for shipping though…

      • +5

Oh, I meant the fruits and vegetables market. Haha

    • +1

They sell counterfeit designers bags there, I thought that's illegal?

      • They get raided ever now and then or at least their suppliers do. But they are still at it.

        • they are not cheap either, they sell for around $300 - $800

  • -8

Never use the Wilsons. They literally will sit outside and will fine at 2:01. At least in Perth thats the case.

    • Touch wood I've never had an issue with Wilsons but, then, I'm super conservative when it comes to making sure I arrive/depart within any stipulated windows of time (so I don't know if Wilsons is any better or worse than other big parking providers when it comes to leniency).

    • +7

It's mostly automated in Sydney. They don't fine you, they charge you more.

      • yeah the person behind the soundbox is mostly there to say "nothing I can do about it, I can't override the system….what time does your ticket say again?"

        • -1

You just gotta push - when they hang up, call again and get a better agent. They have to let you out for free if you can't find a park, for example.

          • @aidenh37: yeah sometimes it's simply a battle of wills….and how much time you have on your hands

    • So did you pay until 2 and or 2.30 when they fine you.

    • +2

You know that you don't have to pay private entity fines right? Only council mandated ones. Private corporations have no ability to fine you and even if they were to take you to court, the only thing they'd get is compensation for the singular minute or time between 2:00 - 2:30PM.

    • No issue parking with Wilson’s in VIC.

  • +4

Thanks for sharing op. Just an fyi, it’s free parking between 6-11:59pm if you dine at the 1909 dining precinct and get the ticket validated.

    • +2

Clearly didn't read the OP where no purchasing of food is required.

    • what you have against chinese food?

      • +12

Must have been arrested for eating that succulent chinese meal…

He didn't appreciate the hands on his junk

Dude I live across the road from market city, the food in Haymarket is some of the best I've ever eaten, and I've extensively travelled to ~30 countries (though admittedly I never eat in the old school china town mall strip)

      • Couldn't agree more - I'd be pretty fkn stoked to have the likes of Happy Chef, Kwan Noodle Bar (sadly closing soon), Xi'an Cuisine, Mother Chu's, Steam King and Kiroran within a 5 min walk of home, so not sure where all this 'shitty chinese food' is hiding

You're going to burn through that 2 hours quickly looking for a park. Just park at Broadway and walk over as usual, or take the train/bus.

    • +1

Broadway is only two hours free parking as well though and it takes about 15 minutes to walk between the two places

Heads up - I live across from Market City, and can see the crazy traffic going into the car park at night. I would highly recommend not trying to come in after 5pm or before 8pm on Friday or Saturday, it's just a nightmare of gridlock traffic. Any other time is completely fine :)

Lots of good food options around, would recommend eating away from the Neon thingy because of crazy crowds - Mr Chen's beef noodles is one of my new favourite restaurants, highly recommend!

    • +3

Sussex centre has a great food court. It will be busy though and last order is around 8pm

    • Agree. Better to park further up near Liverpool street and walk down or catch a light rail.

      • Which parking station would that be?

    • Eating World used to be great. It had the proper Asia food court vibe with good food for reasonable prices. Since they renovated it and made half as big it lacks the charm it used to have.

      • I assumed it was only temporarily smaller while they renovate, that's a bit dire if that's the extent of eateries going forward.

    • Have recently started working near Chinatown, would love any other eatery recommendations!

      So far I've liked

      Gumshara
      Malaysian at Pittsway food court
Laksa from a place in Sussex Centre
      Boon Cafe
      Kowloon Cafe

Pubs around Surry Hills have been hit and miss.

      • +1

Chinese noodle house (The one with fake grapes hanging from the ceiling)
        Chat Thai

  • Thanks booked tomorrow for 5pm-7pm. Tip input the promo code first and you'll be able to book

  • I presume if I book for a particular time, I can park only for that time with that booking. But I am not sure what time I would go tomorrow. Would it be available tomorrow to book like an hour ago before I will go?

  • Xie Xing ping approves of this gathering… It will be another tian square meet up.
