Heard these were good for fishing any feedback from ozb community?

    • Polarised glasses are very good at reducing glare, which you can get a lot of on the water. Maui Jim has pretty good lenses. The reason I bought a pair was because I tried on a friend’s glasses when we were on a boat and I was impressed. You should try on a pair and see if you can tell the difference, otherwise it’s not worth the money.

Previously I had Oakley glasses which I thought also had great lenses, and ray bans, which I thought were mediocre.

Maui Jim is expensive but I feel the money goes into the lenses as opposed to fashion brands where you’re mostly paying for the name.

the money actually goes into the little letters with the brand name, on both counts.

it's criminal that they are charging $200 on sale for plastic frames, with what look like polycarbonate lenses (or at least not glass), as the lens material is not mentioned anywhere, which is a bad sign, as if it were glass, they would be mentioning it.

        • Yeah apart from these particular ones, they're all poly.

@Nitr0: yeesh.. they are no better than luxottica. what is that, 5000 % markup?

    • For saltwater your cheap polarised sunnies do the job. I wear a 'Fish' brand red mirror lens for flats fishing, I don't own a boat. Bought from BCF when they cleared them for $40. Lens cat 3.
An 'amber' or 'copper' glass lens is recommended for trout fishing. I've a Mako pair. Lens cat 2 which is handy when you're in and out of lighter & darker areas wading rivers (trees, mountain valleys, full sun etc).
Premium fishing sunnies are generally lens cat 2. People buy them and go "these $350 fishing sunnies let so much more light in than my old glasses" without recognising they've simply gone from a cat 3 to cat 2 lens. I don't notice any difference in the quality of the glass lens from Mako, Spotters, Tonic etc. They're all good. I chose Mako as they feel lighter in weight and therefore easier to wear all day.

Very good for fishing and the warranty repair and customer service is outstanding.

Even better with another 5% cashback 👍

  • While i don't doubt how good these are for fishing, can anyone suggest an alternative brand in the $80-120 range?

    • Any of the "tradie" polarised glasses eg. Bolle will be fine

  • Do they have prescriptive lenses or can you just buy the frame?

    • They do have prescription lenses. They are very expensive.

I used to fish alot and bought a pair of prescription maui jims about 10yrs ago. Cost me about $1000. Had to get my eyes checked with some fancy machine. They then had to send the results off to the USA to make lenses for me. I have since got my eyes lasered and i buy normal maui jims now.

      • Cost me about $1000.

sounds like the same amount you'd pay for frame + lens at opsm and some other optical stores. such a rort.

    • you can just buy the frame but be wary that some frames have too much curvature for rx lenses.

from the stock that myer has, "red sands", "onshore", "dragonsteeth" and "cruzem" look to be suitable but don't take my word for it.

  • Is this part of the dadbod starter pack

    • Yup. Along with kmart thongs.

  • These never go on special. Bought a pair a couple of months back so will need to pass

  • Agree with all the above, that this brand 'never' goes on sale. Bit salty I bought them before, but was a decent Myer Cashback at the time. and ended up being duty free from my trip 😎

I stumbled upon this brand when trying to find something similar to my Chromance lenses. Impressed that they 'were' the biggest independents in the market (bought out early this year, hence why they will now prob go on sale. Hopefully the quality stays the same. But hey, at least they aren't part of the Luxottica Group, lol).

tbh, you don't see the real deal until your wearing them on a sunny beach, which you can't really do instore 😅. My mates found my Chromance lenses stunning and were impressed as, so Maui Jim being arguably better, I think they are worth this sale price tag.

Heaps of vids on YouTube if you wanna check em out

Back to full price now, even though it said the promo ran until 23/10. Guess they discounted the maui jims by mistake!

  • https://www.otticanet.com/en/ usually has them slightly cheaper (at last some models) when there is a 15% sale. Or if you have a 15% off sign-up coupon

Yes, these have the best lenses. Love MJ sunnies. My 5 year old broke both of mine. I have a pair of Ray Bans which are doing the job now. But I'll get MJs again down the track.
