Economy One-Way Flights from Melbourne (MEL) to Exmouth (LEA) from $399 (Depart April-Oct 2023) @ Qantas

90

Victorians will for the first time be able to fly direct to Western Australia’s Coral Coast, home of the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, on a new Qantas service starting next April.

With the support of the Western Australian Government, Qantas has just put on sale more than 2,500 special fares of $399 one-way to launch the service, helping Victorians achieve the ‘bucket list’ experience of swimming with Ningaloo Reef’s unique whale sharks.

The first flight is set to depart Melbourne on 30 April 2023, with five-hour flights between Tullamarine Airport and Learmonth (Exmouth) Airport to run twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays. It will shave some three hours off the original route flying via Perth (currently around $600 one-way).

The new route will be operated by Boeing 737 aircraft, with more than 18,000 seats available during Exmouth’s peak season from April until October 2023.

$400 one way is the special price? i do not want to see the RRP..

    • Yeah, we're not that keen on having you all over

    • +4

No return ticket required after swimming with sharks.

      • +2

Yeah after swimming with the whale sharks some people choose to relocate there!

    • -1

Perth to Kalgoorlie one way was $900 last week on Qantas, thanks Alan Joyce…

  • +3

That's all good until you can't find a hire car or accommodation in Exmouth. Can't do much without a car.

    • You can always cycle.

      • +1

It's 35km from the airport to the town. Along a road you really wouldn't want to cycle on.

        • There is a shuttle to town. Of course, then you're stuck in town.

          • +9

@wittyusername: Yeah, but TWO IGA's! Opposite each other! Both owned by same dude!

    • Then don't go?

  • A long flight on a narrow body aircraft.

    • +1

So? 5 hours isn't that long by the way.

      • +1

It is in a narrow body aircraft.

        • -1

So? Seats are same as in a wide body.

          • @Mondorock: Incorrect - an inch less legroom on the 737 than A330 which is definitely noticeable on a 5hr flight
One aisle can also be annoying for bathroom/moving around

          • @Mondorock: Yeah I flew Brisbane to Port Hedland a few years ago. A flight full of fat miners on a narrow body plane. Hard pass.

  • +1

didn't know new flight paths were considered deals?

  • +3

So you'll miss the solar eclipse by 10 days. That's very short sighted

    https://ningalooeclipse.com/

    • There's a better eclipse in 5 years time in Sydney, so not worth going crazy for this one.

      • +1

        Yeah, but Sydney.

Given the choice of Exmouth or Sydney there's no real competition.

      • Given all the pollution would you even notice it? <G,D&R>

    • tough to get to cheaply :(

  • +1

I thought this was Melbourne to UK at first!

    • +2

      Better off in Exmouth!

      • I meant Exmouth in the UK.

  • +4

Qantas still trying to charge premium prices while giving a service worse than a budget brand (on the ground at least). Shareholders are in for some pain once the post covid travel rush ends, no way they can sustain their prices without a radical overhaul of their customer experience.

  • exmouth is a great place.Yes its in the boonies and that's why you are paying thru the nose.
Just book early enough if you are going peak as it's overrun by tourists.

It's going to cost you more in fueI (if you driving) to go if you are leaving the east coast.

    Rather go here than Broome.

Oh and if you go to the IGA get a 10-litre bottle of water for 15+ bucks(that was 2021 price).Food not cheap!

  • Got my hopes up - thought this was a flight to Exmouth (UK)….

I'll be staggered if they manage to sell the allocation of subsidised flights. WA Government needs to build the infrastructure to make these places viable tourist destinations before funneling hoards of people there.

    • +1

There's a fair amount of cash being pumped in to do a small amount of preparation for the eclipse.

I don't think it helps when local government knock-back plans for world-class facilities like https://www.ningaloolighthouseproject.com/

      • Local Governments are under the control of State Governments, despite protestations by State Governments when it suits them (see e.g. Daniel Andrews recent rebuffing of suggestions that people being permitted to build in flood plains is a State, rather than a Local, Government issue).

The ideal would be for the Local and State Governments to work together on these things - no reason why the north west of WA couldn't be as much of a tourist destination as Queensland, with the right expenditure. A few government subsidised flights ain't gonna cut it, though!

  • Hmmm is that the 737 max?

  • -4

I love my fellow countrymen but please don't take up these flights. You will not enjoy your time in WA at all. You already know everything there is about how our Premier acts so do yourself a favour, save your money and holiday in Victoria somewhere please 😁

    • What are you on about?

    • +8

      Username checks out.

  • 30th April! 10 days after the total solar eclipse in Exmouth. What horrible planning.
They could be cashing in big time on the lead up to that massive event. I'm not going anymore because of the Qantas cashgrab

  • $800 return PP for a 4.5 hr flight. For that price might as well go overseas…
