Samsung 9.1.4ch Soundbar HW-Q930B/XY $810, 11.1.4ch Q990B/XY $1290 + Delivery ($0 to Metro Areas) @ Appliance Central

850

In before the "9.1.4 ch lol" comments. Yes there are benefits of having separate stereo speakers but some also prefer the convenience and form factor offered by a soundbar + wireless satellites.

Been looking at this soundbar for a while and the price has finally dropped (cheapest ever on Ozbargain it seems)

2022 model from a brick n mortar store that ships to metro cities for free. I was able to price match this from JB to pick it up quicker.

Also on sale is their top of the range Q990B/XY 11.1.4 soundbar for $1290.

EDIT: Prices have further dropped a bit on each so have updated to reflect this

Recent sound bar convert from a legacy 5.1 Home Theatre.

I have the Q990B, but honestly not really worth the almost $500 difference as both are very good.

    Only downsides I have found is;
    - Rear speakers both require power (pro or con)
    - Improvement when Rear speaker are positioned off the floor

Not having 4K 120 VRR passthrough won't be an issue for most people, as it's best to plug such devices directly into the TV anyway.

Another recent convert. Anyone on the edge of buying, BUY IT. I have last years model, Q950.Make sure your room is appropriate for ATMOS if you want to unlock full potential.
Apple TV & Disney+ has ton of ATMOS content.

      • Visually the IMAX Enhanced+ content on Disney is amazing.
Note: This soundbar doesn't support IMAX Enhanced Audio, which is promised by Disney+ but not aware of any timeframe, and is more marketing.

  • Thought of sharing. Might be helpful..

*Samsung HW-Q950A/XY Q-Series Home Theatre Soundbar 11.1.4 Ch , 616W, Dolby Atmos wireless subwoofer on ebay is for $1099 from Auctionebbay and then take $120 off which comes to $979 delivered. Ebay Item no 313597360450.

    • $200 delivery to Perth, WA

      • Its showing free delivery on my account. Probably its for ebay plus members or else they don’t deliver free to some states..

      • Just checked and they deliver all over Australia.

I bought the Q990B from Appliance Central in July. The AutoEQ function on the sub didn't work despite trying out everything. Claimed warranty the same day and returned it to Samsung's authorised service centre. They couldn't find a replacement device for me (for a 2022 model!) and eventually said they'll refund me my money. Took them 3 months to do the refund! Hopeless customer service and I wasn't too pleased with Appliance Central either as they just palmed me off to deal with Samsung myself. I wouldn't recommend Appliance Central and I'm never going to bother dealing with Samsung again.

Pre ordered a Samsung tab and canceled my order before it was delivered, took me around 5 calls and 3 months to get my money back.

  • Just rang local jbhifi and asked if they do price match. They said yes if it's a physical store in Australia. Is Appliance Central a physical store? (there's a click-and-collect address on their website)

    • I've definitely price matched to Appliance Central at JB. Yesterday, even.

yeah went to jb and bought one for $1,330 today. Thanks @kangny

  • Q990B or S95QR for LG C2 ?

    • I went Q990B, the LG didn't seem to review as well. Setting tv/bar today. Only thing to be careful of is the bar is tall, it will poke up into the line of sight of the TV slightly. I plan to put something low and flat under the TV.

      • My TV is wall mounted so no issues with space. Tbh the reviews seem fairly mixed. Probably comes down to personal preference in the end, plus the brand compatibility to get extra features might be the only difference.

      • Actually, the 990b fits in front of the (77 inch at least) C2 quite nicely, doesn't block anything.

  • Can this run spotify on its own like a sonos speaker or does it require device with spoitfy connected to play music?

  • The people who are raving about the Atmos experience, is your room a regular rectangle with walls on 3 sides? I think a lot of the Atmos experience is room dependant. For the one night that I had this soundbar, I didn't experience Atmos much. My living room is a weird L-shape with an open plan kitchen.

    • 100% this, if you have open plan it won't be nearly as effective.

  • The last time I checked out soundbars, I tried Sonos playbar and playbase. I thought they sounded muffled and unclear, which was surprising because so many people raved about Sonos soundbars. Are these Samsung sound bars significantly better?

    • Curious to know how these compare with the sonos, understanding that sonos are much more expensive

      • +1

Samsung should be significantly better for TV/Movie content, 5.1, Atmos, hell even just having a centre channel for dialogue.

Sonos Play Bar + Sub is probably a bit better for most music solutions (plus obviously the multi room speaker set up).

With either set up, making sure the content can actually play correctly on the bar is going to be critical to end result. Content format, device codec support, ARC/eARC, how it's cabled together are all important. For example a lot of less recent TVs that support ARC, but before eARC have highly limited support for audio output via HDMI (no Atmos, no DTS) meaning you would get downsampled audio if running directly from the TV apps.

Also important is the listening room, and how far away you are from the bar. Many of the soundbars (and speakers in general) are quite harsh or unclear up close and need to be a bit more spaced out than you typically find in a store environment.

        • +1

In response to your eARC comment, I believe the general action people take is by plugging a source/android box with 2.1(or possibly 2.0b) HDMI into the eARC port of the soundbar. That way the TV's underrated HDMI port isn't responsible for the handling of the audio.

  • Its also $850 at Retravision if you have an RAC card and would prefer to pick it up. No appliance centrals in Western Australia

Edit: Possibly $805.50 according to the RAC Double Discount for Samsung products

  • I've got speaker wiring already for rear speaker. The rear speakers need a power point not speaker wiring right?

  • I got the Q930B via last month amazing JB bundle deal

No brainer price of $475 for Q930B

    Multiple stack of deals of:
    25% off sale
Extra 15% off with TV bundle (bought Q95B OLED)
10% off after hours JB discount
    $500 samsung cash back
$200 JB cash bak via gift card
Using 10% off face value JB gift cards

Wanted the Q990 but it wasnt on sale at time.

Q930b pretty awesome especially the way it syncs with TV so you also have TV "ATMOS" speakers firing at same time.

Good amount of bass but wanted to see if I can add another subwoofer, no info in manual?

    • how much did it cost you to get the bundle? i missed the previous deal. i am thinking to wait for something similar on cyber monday/black friday deal or buy them separately?

      • Not OP, but for the S95B and Q930B it was just over $3900 before $200 JB GC and $500 Samsung cashback. Even cheaper if paying with discounted giftcards. So after everything it was possible to only be out around $3k delivered.

      • Doubt this deal will be back, it was "the perfect storm" of deals with JB and Samsung syning up mainly (I think) to intro new Samsung TV & soundbar lineup.

TV companies usually do these big discounts/bundles when starting a new year line to spread word of new year tech so I doubt they run same again.

Although you never know could be big sale since World Cup next month

For anyone looking for a true OzB style speaker stand, I introduce to you the kmart speaker stand.

    2 x https://www.kmart.com.au/product/40cm-black-metal-pot-stand-… or https://www.kmart.com.au/product/60cm-black-metal-pot-stand-…
    2 x https://www.kmart.com.au/product/matte-black-dinner-plate-42…
Couple of bits of double sided tape (stops rattling of the plate).

    $16.50~

They've changed the plates and stands slightly but here's mine: https://ibb.co/S6Df2qy

    • You sir, are a genius

    • Mate this ain't your first rodeo. Love it! Might give this a go cheers

    • +1

Your house looks like you can afford better stands :)

But in all seriousness, nice idea. Would be weary of vibrations though.

      • +1

You'd think that, but he got the house from an OzB special and had just enough extra in the bank due to his recent savings from OzB. ;-)

    • Not bad. This is definitely something you wouldn't use with bookshelf speakers, but for a cheap atmos speaker stand, mighty impressive.

      • I had some old Yamaha’s (pictured) on them and also my Samsung Atmos rears on them and never had a problem, especially for the price!

      • Yeah a bigger speaker I wouldn't dare put on that.

I've wall mounted all mine of late, bar towers. Even some really heavy Kef Actives with the right brackets. Mainly scared as I have a 5yo, but she's never bothered with them since she started walking years ago.

Only catch now, my soundstage is a bit higher than it should be, but oh well, suits the wall mounted TVs.

  • Buy now or wait for black friday?

    • +1

Ask Retravision live chat to price match then apply the 10% RAC discount (if you're a member)
I ended up getting the Q930B for $760.50

  • Love my 990B but so close to sending it back for the subwoofer constantly disconnecting - its no more than 1m from the bar itself

    • you on the latest firmware?

  • 20x Woolworths points on TCN Gift cards for HIM and a few others at Woolies from Wed 26th October that can be used at JB Hi FI, so will get those cards and then price match at JB if they haven't dropped the price by then

For either of the soundbars, can you just not use the rear speakers ? My room setup is not really set up to have them :(

Will the soundbar work with just the soundbar and subwoofer ?

    • +1

You can use the rears as fronts to widen the soundstage.

    • Link to the 20x deal?

Good price, but better is available.
    Ebay has https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-11-1-4-Channel-Q-Series-…

1239 delivered with 100 off (maybe ebay plus?)

But i asked Harvey's for their best price - $1189
    Just picked up.

    • "Will usually post within 10 business days of receiving cleared payment"

      • +1

Yeah, not a fan of that either, but good to reference when asking a bricks and mortor to beat.

    • Hey mate any chance you can share your receipt? Which HN did you go to? Cheers

  • +1

$5 cheaper through official Samsung EBay Store with Spend & Save voucher

  • I enabled Alexa on it and it works if I ask other echo dot to play music on it. But the soundbar (Q990b) doesn't start a conversation. Does it have a mic at all?

  • If not using the rear speakers due to the room and no power socket

Next best option would be HW-Q800B/XY ?

  • +1

Looks like price has dropped a bit on each so have updated the post.

    930B now $842 (previously $845)

    990B now $1298 (previously $1330)

    • 930B down to $810, also showing $769 on Ebay with a $60 discount voucher

      • +1

thanks @Rogue01, have updated this now

        • No worries. Umming and aahing over this. Don't need this, but that is cheap…

          • @Rogue01: Just pull the trigger, I sold a Q70T to get the Q950A and glad I did, was almost half of RRP and proper rear (Atmos) wireless speakers, more channels and bigger sub.

  • +1

Bought this on the weekend. GG price matched GG commercial. Then took advantage of the $700 gift card from the Telstra port in deal. I ended up paying $545 in total.
Great system… replaced my 7.1 set up (Sony STRDH770 Receiver + Sony SAVS350H Speaker Package [now for sale if anyone is interested]). Amazing sound… works seamlessly with my LG OLED55B7T. Can't fault it!

  • JB has finally dropped the Q990B to $1499

Will go tomorrow to price match with the woolies TCN 20x point gift cards :)

    • Is that targeted, can't see anything in app
Assume that's if you buy an ultimate gift card?

  • -1

Any possibility price may be further reduced across retailers during BF sales?

  • Q990B $1,247 @ TGG Commercial

  • Just a note for all: returned my q950a due to syncing issues which turned into right rear speaker not turning on. Was deemed a major fault and refund organised. Used it for less than 6 months from brand new, seems to be a similar issue to the Q990B

  • If anyone is having connection issues try this. Check your 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks are separate and not combined on your router and then connect the soundbar to the 2.4GHz

  • Does anyone know if you can add an extra subwoofer?

    • cannot add extra subwoofer, this isnt like the sonos or bose
