It seems to be one of the only options for frugal travellers that need a decent allowance for a short trip, or a small package for extended trips to keep their service alive overseas (either your existing Australian number or a new number). Keep in mind you might need a supplementary local SIM, and if you run out early you can buy another add-on.

Thought I'd share as a standalone post because I had a great experience with this in NZ, and both their app and chat support are great. The catch is you should check if Vodafone partners with a good quality network in your destination country (I think this should be accurate) although Vodafone AU is supposed to roam on all 3 NZ networks.

We figure you won’t be roaming the world all year round, so we’ve made this a one-off purchase and not something that recurs. We’ve also excluded premium, video, special and overseas free phone numbers. We’ve picked countries we know are popular to roam to, but that means unfortunately you can’t use the add-on when roaming in countries outside the selected countries listed above, which may vary.

You can use our International Roaming pack in any of the countries mentioned in our selected countries list above, including data, call and text inclusions. Please keep in mind that while roaming in the overseas country, you can only call or text a number that is local to the country you are roaming in, or standard Australian numbers (no premium services).

Sounds cheaper than our national carrier charging $10 for every sms forwarded!

For USA roaming, choose T Mobile in your cellular options. It was defaulting to AT&T which didnt work and had to chat with support.

i tried this in Indonesia at the end of September, the coverage in Jakarta was terrible it barely got 4G and many times it switched to 2G. my partner using local SIM was perfectly fine getting 4G all the time.

    • You can force your phone to register on a network of your choice. On Samsung it's under Mobile networks > Network operators. Yep some of the Indonesian networks are shoddy.

      • Indonesian network can be good if you have access to Telkomsel which is the equivalent of Telstra. But with Felix considering its a low cost carrier and struggling indoors even in Australia, Felix in Indonesia can only roam to the lesser networks and even to Indosat that is the 2nd largest network they have probably equivalent to a MVNO access in Australia where you don't always get to log on to all their towers.

Coverage in Indonesia in general should be better than Australia considering how many people live in rural areas. I remember back then i could be looking down an actual dead crater of a mountain in West Java and still have HSDPA and that was in 2007.

        • Checking the partner provider link in the OP, Telkomsel should be enabled for use on the roaming pack. From a live stream I watched in Jakarta, even with them speeds are patchy.

          • +1

@Techie4066: Apparently not. I manually hunted the best provider whenever i move into a new location and Telkomsel always had "forbidden network" shown on my S20+ 5G. I tried this in 4G/3G/2G mode. and at some point forced to all the other modes as well.

For a budget provider like Felix you can't really expect them to be maintaining the best agreements with providers around the world. But thats why I said it felt like MVNO access where for example you may get Telstra network but you don't get all the towers available to you.

With Felix it definitely felt like low-class provider when I was in Jakarta with only XL and Three providing most of the access. If I'm lucky I can get into Indosat but very rare which means that considering Indosat's coverage, that means Felix roaming gets excluded from various Indosat towers in the area.

            • @meong: So it really depends on the quality of the partner service provider. I was surprised how good One NZ was across Queenstown and the ski resorts - just as good as the competition.

              • +1

@Techie4066: Yeah I had more consistent experience with Three UK's Internet With Legs even though the downside is you can't make phone calls and obviously you're not roaming your own number.

              • @Techie4066: I found spark to be the best in Queenstown. There were a few areas while roaming that one NZ lost service

  • @Techie4066 - Plan to go to NZ, then to Asia & UAE in the next 12 months so wondering what's the best way to leverage this deal. Requirement below so appreciate if op or someone can answer

    • I don't want to mess around with my current monthly Mobile No/Plan that has plenty data/calling/VoLTE/VoWIFi within AU
    • Happy to have a new number as long as it gives good data while being overseas to use WhatsApp, Viber, VoIP Apps
    • Need to be able to make local calls in the overseas like hotel, airbnb host, car rental etc
    • 2 other family members needs good amount of data (not sure this would be a good choice https://www.kogan.com/nz/buy/kogan-mobile-prepay-mobile-star…)

    Thanks very much

    • +1

Hmm Kogan would be good during your time in
NZ but regarding the other countries you suggested, it only gives you 500mb for $12 and it's valid for only 3 days. Sounds like your better off keeping your Sim and purchasing a international roaming Simcard when you travel to Asia and UAE. A few roaming providers have been suggested above. If your phone supports eSim, then you might be able to run two Sim cards at once. Your number plus one for travelling.
Or else you can use Felix but once you run out of 100 minutes or the 4gb data, you will need to repurchase another international add-on for $20.

      • Thanks Tinky Winky - do you know how can I buy a Kogan NZ sim and get it delivered to my Aus address? Can you buy Kogan in the Airport? Looks like its a cheaper option as well as I need mainly Data as got already VoIP via another carrier.

Can I order a Felix with any number and delivered in Australia, pause the subscription and enable when landed in NZ and be able to use the 4GB data? Is it 100mins or 4GB or either you need to choose and cannot have both? is the international add-on for to use while being in overseas for calls/data only?

        • Unfortunately I have no idea about the NZ Sim card delivery. Hopefully someone else might have an answer for you :) I have had delivered Sim cards to a hotel before I arrive, but that means arriving into the country with no Sim card and relying on the airport wifi on arrival haha.

Felix is all done online. You get the option to have the sim delivered or eSim, keep your number or get a new one.
Your first month will be free, and you can pause the subscription straight away if you wish.
The pause won't kick in until the end of the current month cycle.
The international add-on comes with 4gb data, 100 calls and 100 mins. If your wife/daughter eat through the data and need more - then you'll need to purchase another $20 international add-on. You unfortunately can't just add on data alone.
The add-on is valid for a year. So if you don't use all the roaming data/calls/text in NZ, you can use it on your next trip :)

          • @Tinky Winky: Thanks Tinky Winky. Sorry to be pain but I am trying to work out the best way to now buy 2x felix sim so just let me be clear on the details.
            (1) I order Felix online and during purchase first month is free by the coupon
            (2) I activate and pause the subscription so no charge for me - do you know how long the subscription stays active if I don't resume the subscription?
            (3) I buy the international add-on for $20 while before departing Australia - my ultimate cost would be $20 for 4gb data, 100 calls and 100 mins :-)

            • @Unified: That sounds correct :)
You can pause your subscription for 242 days. So at some point, you will need to spend another $35 to reactivate it for a month.

If you're buying two Sims, have a peak at the other comments. I know it's already confusing, but they also have a referral system which gives you and the person you refer credits. Might be of interest to you :)

    • Felix won’t work in UAE you can only accept text messages

  • Anyone know what networks Felix uses when in the USA for roaming. Just need to know for phone compatability ie T-Mobile AT&T Verizon etc

    • According to a report above and the link in the OP, the default is AT&T but manually forcing your phone to switch networks should work.

I ended up buying eSim.me which is a physical sim card ($70 incl express shipping from germany) that lets you load esim profiles to non esim phones, and airalo app to buy the sim profiles for indonesia, other countries like singapore, $15 for a 100gb sim from a 7-11 will never be beaten

It probably works out to be a little more expensive than felix, but im guessing you need to pay for the standard month on felix to use this $35 + $20.

If anyone has a modern flagship phone
    iphone 11 and up
    samsung s20 and up
    pixel 2 and up etc
they have esim built in and you can just download airalo or other providers and buy international esim profiles

You can sign up for free, see the top of the page. Felix is more for those that want to keep their number available which you can't with those data SIMs (or they come with a random overseas number - travel SIM + Felix would complement each other). Looks like it wouldn't be possible to have a roaming add-on available in every country without forking out $5/day so Felix might still be a good option for your Australian-based plan in the countries it works.

Anyone know if this works on a cruise ship? Or only on land in Vanuatu?

  • One question: If I just need receive some verification SMS overseas(now more and more websites need 2-setp verify), can I just connect the WIFI over there without any roaming service? If it is feasible, which providers plans offer these services? Thanks!

    • From what I've read on whirlpool, a number of phones that support voice over wifi also do messages over wifi. I read that android phones only support the new RCS messages though, not a plain old fashioned SMS, which is presumibly what the banks use.
Seems extraordinarily hard to pin down which phones exactly support it though. I've also heard reports of people getting the bank SMS on android on wifi, or even over the internet connection of a second SIM.
I have also heard reports of roaming for receiving SMS working on Boost, even though they officially still say roaming isn't back. Thats been the ideal solution for me in the past, just roaming but for receive only at no cost. I will find out if it works in January.

My coles mobile SIM worked fine for roaming and receiving sms overseas with no extra charge.
Just turn off mobile data for coles SIM.
They do charge for making and receiving calls/sending sms tho.

  • Can I register to port to felix esim on the same day that I'm going overseas and then get the roaming pack? will it be instant if I switch to esim ( from boost )

  • I’m moving overseas and was hoping to keep my number (currently on Telstra prepaid) alive for the next few years. I usually go with the Amaysim Pay-as-go to keep some other numbers I had for when family would come over.

This sounds like a good alternative. Is there anything I need to consider to keep my number live for an extended period overseas?

    • Amaysim $10/year to keep your number alive with roaming on.

Otherwise, Telstra prepaid/postpaid and Boost all allow vowifi overseas, allowing you to receive/call and receive/send sms as if your location was Australia, for free, unlimited.

Might be a bit more expensive but could be handy. That only works if your phone is connected to wifi or has an other sim’s card internet access to reach Telstra servers + a compatible phone.

  • Can i pause rhe plan, and keep adding raoing oack everytime it finishes? I am overseas for 6 month

    • You can pause up to 242 days. While paused, you can purchase $20 roaming pack. You can keep adding roaming packs while your subscription is paused.

    • +1

If you sign up by a referral link provided above, you'll get $35 credit which will cover your first month. You can pause it straight away (pause won't kick in until the first month is over) and you can add a $20 roaming pack at any point.

So you'll only be out of pocket $20 :)

      • I use referral code from above link, but I still needs to pay for the first month. It says I will get $35 credit in my wallet. Has this been changed? This is on the order summary
        Your plan
        felix mobile subscription
        $35
        FREE Express delivery
        $0
        Switch number *******
        $0
Nice one! $35 referral credit has been added to your felix wallet
        $35 today
        $35/mth thereafter

  • Can someone confirm, use referral code is still possible to get first month free or not?

    • Gave it a quick google and looks like first month free promotion finished end of March.

  • I am going to Egypt at the end of May for 3 weeks. Could I get a Felix sim, add this international pack to it, and forward my main number to the Felix number to take calls? I have applied for a job and may get a call when I'm gone so was hoping this would sort it out.

    • Unfortunately this pack doesn't cover Egypt. I'd check out buying a local SIM when you arrive, and perhaps you could have the interview over an online call.

      • Cheers Techie, will give it a go.

  • Worked great in Japan, SoftBank

  • Traveling to NZ in a week's time. Anyone know if the international roaming reception and speed are decent?

  • It does not work in Malaysia, i haven't been able to receive any calls in the last few months.

  • If going travelling to Japan and just needing data for whatsapp calls, what is the cheapest felix SIM to get to add-on this $20 international 4gb option?

  • This a prepaid, or a credit check post paid?

    • Pre-paid

  • Is the monthly mobile fee still $35? Everyone seems to be referring to that although my understanding is that the monthly fee has been increased to $40 since mid sept 2023. For those who signed up before and paused, restarting the mobile plan might change the monthly fee to $40 rather than $35. I may be wrong though.

This is not a bargain, a standard package provided by Felix which is incredibly poor value.

    • great value for international roaming on a prepaid sim. I haven't found better.

  • I set this up for my dad recently. I could only get the FLEX20 code to work for 20% off. $20 for local plan for a month. Paused renewal. $20 for 4GB international roaming. Physical SIM and can get set up in Australia before departure. He’s in Spain and it’s working.

Word of caution, I'm overseas and have an active roaming pack however my sms's suddenly stopped and I only realised it coz I needed OTPs and I couldn't receive them. Saw my last received SMS was 10 days ago. You can contact Felix only via their online chat and they took a few hours to respond. Even with troubleshooting they haven't resolved it and I'm told their technical team will look into this. This is very scary as all my banking and other important accounts require OTP that is connected to this number. Calls are fine though. Hopefully they can resolve this for me, but wanted to share as a PSA for anyone else.

I tried the international roaming last month during my overseas trip. It was terrible. The data works well, but the voice call doesn’t work at all. I had to buy a local SIM

    • In what country? I've now used it in NZ, the US and Canada with no issue.

      • It was a business trip to India and Singapore. There were no issues with Data as I was able to get 4G and 5G, the incoming call worked too. But I was not able to make a call.

  • I purchased the add on and paused my number but only problem is if people in Australia try calling your number it says its not available. And as its my mowing work number i did lose clients. So i guess its not wise to pause your number if you want to receive calls from Australia while roaming.

  • Would this work on a cruise ship?

    • I very much doubt it, but it would depend on which countries you are visiting and how close to a cell tower you are.

  • I used this at Orlando,Florida and it was next to useless, couldn't open a web page etc, very very slow and poor connection, so I wouldn't recommend ..sorry Felix..otherwise great deal

  • I'm planning on using this next week in France and Spain. If you have an Android device, do you need to go into device settings and turn roaming on?
