  • People kept saying next gen cpu adoption is a ripoff due to ddr5 costs, but this is cheaper than most ddr4 32gb?

    • This first gen DDR5 is garbage

Current 4800Mhz DDR5 is the equivalent of 2400Mhz DDR4 when that was first launched

DDR5 only starts making sense at 6000Mhz+ when the increased bandwidth then overcomes the latency disadvantage compared to 3600Mhz DDR4

When DDR5 6000 is the same price per GB as DDR4 3600 is now, then it will be time to upgrade

Except that DDR5 4800mhz cl40 beats DDR4 3600mhz cl16 in gaming benchmarks - where latency is important. So no, this isn't garbage, this is better than the average DDR4 kit, and in bandwidth- better than all DDR4 kits.

If you have a choice (for example building a new intel PC), you would be very ignorant to be purchasing DDR4.

        Btw, DDR4 was launched at 2100mhz :)

If you want to just game, without any real interest in using your system for anything else, then the lower latency of the DDR4, and particularly when used with the Core i5-13600K, will give you the smoothest overall experience. Again, that isn't to say that DDR5 and the Core i9-13900K isn't massively impressive, but bang for buck you'll get more out of the Core i5 and the DDR4, then spending the difference on a GPU upgrade than you will for grabbing the more expensive two. Even with the same GPU the DDR4 seems to just shade things.

From Dec 2021, still has not changed

          Our Key Takeaways
DDR5 is fast, but only in some workloads.
          Don't buy DDR5 for gaming.
For now, DDR4 offers more bang for your buck because DDR5 is either out of stock or extremely expensive.
          DDR5 has more future-proofing value.

            @Look Up: First link
"If we had to get one today that lasted a year or on a tight budget, we'd go for the DDR4 setup. If we were planning a longer term build, we'd have to go with the DDR5 just because it's more consistent regardless of use case."

            Not sure this supports DDR4.

            Second link
No where in the article does it say that their recommendation from 10 months ago still applies….

10 months and several new CPU's and GPU's later… not sure this is the link to be basing decisions on.

The advice is based on DDR5 being more expensive. It isn't more expensive anymore.

You went to the trouble of finding two articles, look at the charts…

  • it was 167 on amazon

    • that is 1x32gb this is 2x16gb where you can run dual channel

      • thanks! just noticed it

  • Not too familiar with how RAM works. CL40 is very slow latency compared to CL16 or CL18 isn't it? Or have I got it mixed around?
