Was this price last week and I missed it, thought I'd have to wait longer than 4 days to see it again.

  • One of my kids has this - got it for about 380 earlier in the year.
Sweet little machine, good resolution for the size of screen and runs ubuntu 12.04 well.

  • don't be fooled by the 3 x USB, it means 3 USB ports, not USB 3 ports

    • +26

Don't think anyone was fooled by that.. but thanks :)

The reviews are good. But this item is not moving quickly off the shelf at JB. At the Castle Hill store they got stacks of them, but very less interest from the customers.

I think the price could drop even further.

    • I think you will find this is because JB has taken a huge number of these. They have been selling heaps of these for the last year or so.

These ones have a better CPU than last year, great battery life and full windows.

Great deal, why you would buy a network I don't know.

      • +1

if JB priced this at $299 (psychological pricing), they will be sold like hot cakes. 3 months ago this laptop would cost $405. Almost $100 off. Good deal.

      • Netbook not network…stupid autocorrect!

        • Why oh WHY don't our phones enable us turn -Off- this D*MNED AutoCorrect / SpeedType!

It's almost "lawsuit bait" the way it twists meanings & make a person seem to be drunk or drugged, if they don't stop & spend -more- proofreading their "AutoCorrected" text…

usually -more- time than they -may- have saved using that silly "service" :-/

Expected reply from phone maker: "It ain't broke, it's a feature. ;-)

LOL @ "very less". You're Indian?

  • +1

I believe this should be the most value for money netbook if you are considering one.

  • Good spec, good size, good price, good buy…

  • If it's $318.40 delivered, would it be cheaper in-store?

    • nope

  • -3

    sooooo weak cpu

    • +3

      It's a $300+ netbook. You can't expect a Core i3 in a 11" netbook can you.

You can probably overcome some of it's deficiencies with a solid state drive upgrade. Chuck in a OCZ Octane SSD and watch it fly. In most instances of computing, it's usually the 5200RPM drive that is the bottleneck (waiting for programs to load etc)

      • Exactly
More Ram wouldn't hurt either (and would be cheap too)

      • But there are considerably more powerful laptops for $30 more. This one has a B815 CPU (double the passmark score) and a 15" screen (though that's admittedly better for some people, but worse for others):

        http://www.orangeit.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products…

        • ya, i missed that one when it was $288 from centrecom not long ago.
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/69012

        • Ooh thanks - missed that one, wasn't in the market then. I'll wait a couple of days, maybe there will be an EOFY deal on it…

        • +1

People buying HP DM1 are probably not buying it for the sheer CPU power, but they need something almost as portable as a netbook but faster and more liveable.

    • What tasks do you do that a CPU limited on your laptop/netbook/tablet?

The CPU is the weak spot in the machine but it's still fine for most things.

Far more games these days are limited by the graphics where this thing does remarkably well.

It is a pity there is no integrated die Intel/Nvidia CPU/GPU system but that's just the way things go. AMD have done a sterling job with their APUs.

  • +1

Not bad, but not sure if this really classifies as a notebook. It's a powerful netbook, though.

    • +1

It is classified as a sub notebook

  • Whats the battery life on these?

  • +6

im typing on it now and very happy for $318. this is not a slow atom 450 netbook. i consider this as a laptop. as good as my old core 2 duo tecra m10. very good value for money. long battery life. multitouch touchpad. light and stylish. the bottom line is "If you don't want the bulk of a 15.6-inch budget machine yet can't afford an ultrabook, don't stoop down to the netbook level, get this instead"

    • I got one last week as well. Very happy with it so far. I agree that it will be hard to get these specs for the same kind of money, unless they do a 30% off deal.

  • +1

This processor is only slightly faster than N570. Why don't you guys consider Emachines 355, which usually priced at $260?

    • +1

The emachines is quite inferior to the DM1. It is not all about cpu.
DM1 can easily upgrade ram to 4-8gb, runs full windows 7 easily (and office), screen is signficantly larger in real life, and is 1280x768 rather than 1024x600. I think the amd graphics on the dm1 is much faster as well.

If you want a small laptop, look at a DM1 next to a netbook and unless you want an ultraportable system where speed doesn't matter, the DM1 has much better useabilty.

If you want features and don't care how big it is, then the 15" laptops give you much better performance and features for the dollar, but usually have way shorter battery life, are not truly portable, and have screen resolutions the same as the dm1.
I own one and would go again.

    • Emachines just fall apart, poorly constructed

  • I bought one of these last year during a 10% sale, albiet with a 1.3GHz processor. Best netbook on the market in my opinion. Nice keyboard and I think 11.6 inch is the perfect size, not too small but still very portable. Battery life for me has been around 4-5 hours.

  • What's the fan like? Is it quiet when idle?

    • Yes very.

Even when it's running it's quiet.

It's not as impressive as the no fan Atom based 6200 Intel boards but it's very good.

I use mine as an HTPC type thing sometimes.

  • Not sure it matters, but link goes to model "4108AU" not 4018.

How would this be to use as a HTPC? Is the energy use ok?

    • I wouldn't have thought so but a quick Google reckons it would be fine, assuming it has HDMI out.

Although there'd be much cheaper options offering the same performance.

    • Energy consumption is minimal (CPU and GPU TDP is 18w) and you should be able to play 1080p H.264 quite easily with DXVA or other HW acceleration enabled as it's a UVD3 chip.

  • picked two up (one for a mate)… JB wouldn't even round the price down to $318 (40c off)..
went past MSY after to get 4gb ram ($27)

  • +4

I own the 4016 (model before) and would highly recommend these to anyone wanting a very portable laptop. Don't let the HP symbol on the lappie fool you. This is built very nicely and looks even better in reality then in the pictures.

It blows the crap out of any netbook and is easier to carry around then any notebook. Unlike most netbooks, it can play some average games (TF2, CSS, WOW all have no issue). Battery can be over 6hours if configured right and it's a lovely piece of equipment to use.

If you looking for something in this ballpark, and are ummmming and arrring (and you're not a pirate), just grab it. One of those laptops you won't regret getting.

    • +2

Even if you are a pirate this laptop would be excellent on board ship.

      AaaaaaMD.

  • +1

can you throw in a standard 9mm height SSD drive in this? or do you need the 7mm drives?

  • +1

Standard SSD fits. I have had the 4016 model and was so happy with it I haggled JB down to $312 for the 4018 but I think that must surely be very close to cost price. It plays some games and full HD video easily. For me it would be useful if the keyboard had backlighting but I'm just being picky. It so nice to have a decent resolution screen full notebook functionality (sans optical drive) in such a compact form with great battery life at such a low price that I am surprised there are not sold out!

    • I think it was a bargain at $318. Had one issue with my original purchase and the salesperson at JB Hifi was happy to replace it or refund the money the next day.

  • Picked this up yesterday instore, compared against the rest of the netbooks on sale, this was the winner. Esp for 20% off - $335 was a sweet deal. A bit of HP Bloatware, but have just installed linux mint on it and its going well..

  • @sasquire: how have you got the battery configured to get 6hours out of it?

    • Makers sometimes have a web page listing the battery test configuration (ASUS used to do, for its Eee PC netbooks).

See if HP has one, then experiment from there… :-)

  • Does anyone know if it has one or two memory slots and the maximum RAMs it can recognise (with the default windows system)?
A bit off topic as well… can we buy it and claim for work-related expenses since we're approaching tax time?
    Thanks in advance~

    • +1

2 memory slots - upgradable to 8GB RAM. Not sure about tax, just ask your accountant.

  • I bought this a couple weeks ago from JB in Robina, $270. They had an instore-only manager's special of $299 plus 10% of all laptops

    • post receipt please

    • ya, so we can do a price match.

  • +1

2 RAM slots, Max 8GB, tax claim is up to you/r accountant

    • So to clarify if you wanted to maximize the ram you would take out the presumably 2x1GB sticks of ram and put in 2x4GB sticks? (I haven't upgraded a computer in ages).

Also is that DDR2 or DDR3?

      Thanks.

      • DDR3 RAM. I just plan on adding 4GB to make it 6GB in total.

        • Excuse my ignorance but if there are 2 slots and 2 GB of RAM - does that mean that it comes with 1x2GB or 2x1GB RAM?

Also is this the sort of thing I am after:
          http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=7823

          Thanks.

        • It comes with a 1X2GB RAM; and yes, that 4GB Kingston DDR3 SoDIMM is the right one. So just grab one additional 4GB to add to your existing 2GB, that'd be more than enough I would say.

        • You've made my night/morning. Now if Black Caviar can win..

  • Still… somebody was -recently- selling an HP netbook with 3G, as well as WiFi, networking for $299.

  • anyone knows whether does this comes with a 7200rpm or 5400rpm hdd?

  • Does anyone know if this comes with a 3 cell or 6 cell battery?
Oh and I'm real dumb on this… how likely is it that this machine can run Windows 8???

    • It has a 6 cell battery - as I type mine is showing 5 hours 31 mins left @ 94% charge.

how likely is it that this machine can run Windows 8???

Mate if it has enough memory it could probably run window 8, but after paying $318 for a notebook, who cares?

  • Just picked one up from JBs at Southland. They had heaps left. The dude reckons it only has one slot for RAM and that it won't take an SSD.

    Can anyone confirm this?

    • comes with 1x 2gig stick with 1 spare slot free. it takes a ssd ok (9mm and 7mm versions are ok).

i've got it running with 2x 4gig DDR3 1333 ram with a crucial m4 ssd. Works great for a mini laptop to code on.

the service door is a bit hard to remove on mine, took a while but managed to slide it open for the HDD and ram replacement.
