      thats oct, this is nov

    • +8

Sorry my bad. Note to self: read properly then comment…

  • +10

So I'll have Fallout:New Vegas from this offer, I already have Fallout 3 from Epic Games this week and Fallout 76 from previous Prime Gaming offer. Can someone who has played these please tell me which one is worthy of installing if you are new to the game? Bear in mind I'm old so my reflexes are sluggish (not like you young whipper-snappers).

    • +16

I've played Fallout 3 only and thoroughly enjoyed it but after reading a lot of reviews, I believe New Vegas is the best of the lot.

      • +9

        This is true.

But I would play FO3, go to Nexus Mods and install the best ones (youtube a bit).

Then FONV. It is the better one- so play it second. Unless you only will play one of the games, in which case play NV. Again mod it up.

If after those two, you want more there is 86.

        • +1

@StorminNorman Thanks for the comments about mods. I was only looking to play one game, so I think it will be Fallout 3.

          • +4

@cryptowiz: Yeah. Even though you say you'll only play one- you'll end up playing NV too. They're both great.

FO3 was groundbreaking for its time. NV's writing and quest lines make it the better game IMO. Both can be played independently.

          • +1

@cryptowiz: I liked New Vegas way more than Fallout 3, at least from the story and world point of view.

        • Fallout 3 from GOG doesn't need any mods, it'll run smoothly under windows 10 as is as it already includes some mods where were needed with the steam version.

          • +1

@gizmomelb: I still recommended add mods since it is not just for fixing bugs, some mods will make game looks better (reshade or 4K texture), while other adding qualify of life improvement or skin / item, so worth it to check on Nexus mods.

          • @gizmomelb: More about quality of life improvements rather than compatibility. But yes, it is much more stable/less buggy than NV lol

      • @alwaysupforabargain Thanks for that. If Fallout 3 is as good as you say then I'll probably go with that for starters. I'm just concerned that later games in the franchise will require "knowledge or experience" from the earlier games in order to play.

        • +4

Every story is self-contained, they just add to the "universe" and make funny references to the earlier games.

You may like 1 & 2, but 3 and New Vegas are modern and excellent.

          • @Wolfenstein98k: Oooof. Modern? FO3 felt dated to me when I played it on release. It's pretty much equivalent to Oblivion in tech, veeeeeery long in the tooth now.

            • +5

@Sxio: It's an FPS with modern menu system.

              Compare to isometric FO1 & 2.

The comment wasn't comparing it to the latest COD (which would be ridiculous), it was comparing it to the other Fallout games, which was the context of the question.

      • +2

I'll play a solid amount of the 3 just for that intro and to get familiar with the mechanics of the game, then when sick of it I'll move into NV and give it the time it deserves. You'll need a lot of hours in before the game starts to shine so don't quit too early. Have fun!

        • +1

          @Deliotron Many thanks for that.

    • +8

Fallout 3 is probably my favourite game of all time and I've been gaming since the 70s!

      • +2

@beebul That's a vote of confidence. I've also been playing computer games since the mid 70's (Adventure, Lunar Lander and Hunt The Wumpus).

        • +2

@cryptowiz This was my first games console..from the late 70s..

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/159813/98945/2014-04-2…

But before then I'd played in arcades (well not arcades but some places, like pubs, had the early arcade machines) and dabbled on basic microcomputers.

Still a big gaming fan, having young kids helps!

          • +1

@beebul: So you still have it… great! I still have a motorcycle "jump the buses" videogame that I built (it was a project in Electronics Today International magazine (project 810).

Speaking of arcades, I remember when Pong first came out and a schoolfriend and I skipped sport to go to the Mall and play Pong. We only stopped playing when we were approached by an much older teen who told us to give him our money.

My first console was the Fairchild Channel F sold by Dick Smith. I sold it along with 11 cartridges on eBay a couple of years back as I was (and still am) downsizing.

Great to reminisce about "the good old days".

            • +1

@cryptowiz: No unfortunately I don't, although it still might be at my mums in England, I know a lot of my old gear is still in the attic! That console actually came with a light gun and you had to shoot the pigeon (a square) that flew across the screen… Hours of fun for 1978!

I got my first proper computer in 1982 the ZX Sinclair Spectrum with a massive 48k of RAM and you had to load games off cassette…

              Good old days indeed!

              • +2

@beebul: Wow a 48K Speccy!! La di da!!

I only had a 16K Spectrum, but I did get the expansion pack later to add the extra ram.

                :)

                • +1

@ilathwel: Ha yeah but that RAM pack did wobble from what I've seen!

Great times, kids these days don't know they're born 🕹️

        • +2

Hunt the Wumpus? Now, that's a game I've not heard in a long time. A long time.

      • +3

I remember addicted to playing Fallout 3 at the time, just single player, to the early hours in the morning but I had to work the next day. My then fiance (now hubby) woke up at 4am, saw me still playing, not saying a word he went downstairs and switched off the power from the main! 🤣

    • +10

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are must-plays. Both have a feature called VATS which means you don't have to have fast reflexes (usually), you can plan your moves with time frozen.

      You absolutely must play both.

Start with 3 since it is the earlier release.

76 is completely different and you can skip it, or play it last if you get desperate when you finish with New Vegas, which will be a tremendous experience.

    • +3

Fallout: New Vegas w/ DLCs is GOAT in terms of writing/cohesiveness. But it's starting to show its age, the gameplay is simple/outdated unless you mod the game. Make sure you install the community patch beforehand for the bugfixes.

Fallout 3, 4 and 76 is more of a you can pick it up and enjoy it at any time. If you play the game in short bursts it'll be fun, but if you play it in long-sessions and you'll notice that the game had a lot more hands/writers involved; the narrative tone changes multiple times throughout the game.

    • +1

New Vegas is great, but as others have said, mod the heck out of it, even if you update only the visuals

    • +5

Download a mod called the tale of two wastelands. It practically adds a train station so you can travel in between both games with the same save game.

      • Wow that's amazing. Did not know about that. Thanks!

    • +4

Install both Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3. Then install the mod called 'Tale of Two Wastelands'. Then play Fallout 3 content, take a train in-game to New Vegas and play that content.

I'm 40 and enjoyed Fallout 1 and 2 back in the day, but too busy with life for 3 when it came out.

When I finally did play 3, I was a busy adult with kids, not a teen or student who had endless hours to game.

So while it had it's moments, they were few and far between.

And the main gameplay (combat, searching for stuff to salvage, and way too much fiddly inventory management) just wasn't fun. Not polished.

I'd have loved it as a teen but it was really a waste of my time as an adult in 2022. Dozens or even hundreds of games have both actual effort put into the gameplay, AND more dense and interesting worlds to explore.

So don't feel like you have to persist if you are disappointed by it.

      • +4

@GandalfTheCheap Thanks for the comments. I've got 25 years on you and although I have plenty of time in the day to play, I'm a bit of a "jobber" and would probably switch to something else pretty quickly should it not quickly engage me. Long gone are the days when I spent countless hours with Infocom text adventures or the (then) latest game from Sierra. I'll give 3 a whirl.

        • +2

@cryptowiz, how IS gaming in your 60’s? I’m 38 with 2 young kids and a new born, & cannot imagine ever getting the time back to engage with a long AAA game. I still play small amounts, but kids have to come first.

How is gaming in your 60’s different to where I’m at now?

          • +5

@theSav: @theSav I agree with your comments about family coming first. I have a lot of time on my hands since I retired 8 years back. I also have a lot of interests but I like to keep everything regimented. So I'll play for 90 mins and stop. I'll read for 90 minutes and stop. I'll fiddle with building electronics projects for 90 minutes and stop. The last of my kids moved out 7 years ago and I'm someone who usually sleeps for 6 (at most 7) hours a night, so I can go downstairs at 4:30am and start playing games until my wife wakes up. I probably spend most gaming time on casual puzzle games or replaying old adventure games but I do enjoy something grittier now and then (if my reflexes can handle it).

            • +3

@cryptowiz: I have a pipe dream that I'll get to my 60s and be able to play all the games I want. But yeah, I guess the reflexes and the body getting old might stop that! But yeah, having time to sit down and do the Syberia series or all the old Sierra classics I never finished might be fun.

            • @cryptowiz: This is great insight, thanks for sharing :)

    • +2

Fallout New Vegas is an RPG with authentic Fallout-feel (Fallout 1/2), don't really need reflexes, try that one out first.

      • Thanks, I appreciate the advice.

    • Fallout NV is my favourite game of all time. Very breaking bad soundtrack too.

    • Fallout NV, then Fallout 3. Both are excellent games.

  • I think it would be a great feature for OzB to be able to set a reminder for upcoming deals like this… I'm afraid I'll forget to claim these next month, unless I set some sort of alert on my phone!

    • +10

      Hit the Reminder button ;)

      • +1

        D'oh ignore me, I'm an idiot! 👍🏻

      • Holy crap there’s a reminder button…!!

    • +4

There is a reminder button which I believe is exactly for this purpose. It is located below the tags and above the related products section. You can choose whatever date for the reminder and you get a notification on the date.

    • +1

      Just above "Related Stores" bit.
You have to be logged in to see it.

      • +2

        Thanks. I was about to call 0118 999 881 99 9119 725-3 to ask about it.

  • Question: I’m a Prime member but never used prime gaming yet. Does it work like this: as long as one is a Prime member one can download and play all those games ‚for free‘?

Can I make that option available to my kids who don’t have my Prime account (eg Family Account or so)?

    • +3

The games are yours to keep, even after you leave Prime. Also, the games are redeemed via different methods, some use the Prime Gaming app, others use Origin, Epic or Microsoft Store, Legacy Games app or GOG. You'll see on the game which it uses. It's not just the games but also a load of DLC that they make available. If you go to https://gaming.amazon.com/home and click GAMES, you'll see what is currently available. Also, looking at the games to redeem, you will see an icon in the picture showing where it gets redeemed. If it shows a "crown" image then it's redeemed via the Prime Gaming app (which you will need to download and install). The others are self-explanatory.

    • After you claimed it, it yours forever.
and since this is on GOG, you can install it DRM free.

  • +10

Too many games, too little time.

    • I still love Prime and Epic throwing free games I will never play because of time yep.

  • +1

Is that Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition?
Searching Fallout New Vegas on GOG only shows the Ultimate Edition…

    • +2

If they are selling a non ultimate edition of such an old game, that's pretty bad.

  • +1

Thanks to @dealbot for the post and a big thankyou to everyone who gave me feedback about which Fallout game to play. Much appreciated.

  • I have never used this before but figured may as well seeing as I have prime anyway. Is there any way to get these on my steam account or is this another launcher/store program I have to download?

    • @doobey1231 See my response to @MerlinKlendatu above. Short answer, if you want them all then you will end up with launchers for Epic, Origin, Ubisoft, Legacy, Battle.net and Prime Gaming. If you are selective and look at who it's redeemed through then you can cut down the launchers (but miss out on some fun games). GOG games don't need a launcher (though they do have one available). From memory, Prime Gaming did have a Steam redeemable game in the distant past but I don't recall ever seeing it again.

  • WRC 9 is pretty fun

  • I can't see half of these games through my prime account. wanted WRC but it's not showing up. any ideas?

    • These games will be available next month.

      • Thank you Nords, sorry, I didn't read probably. I must be getting old!

  • +4

Classic DLC in Fall Out NV. Don't miss out if its your first play through.

And dont overlook mods. This game can improved significantly. Look into using wabbajack for an easy auto installer

Warning that legacy games requires you use their launcher to download. It's not clear until you've given them some personal details. Just in case you're not into their kind of game and might not think it worthwhile (like me)
