Friend found a LIME helmet and decided to keep it

Friend found a very new looking LIME helmet (the ones that are used with the rental scooters/bikes) he decided to keep it and use it for himself.

I said that's stealing and you're going to look like a weirdo wearing it on your normal bike (which is an expensive Ebike) but he said the person who lost it would have already paid for it due to the T&Cs for Lime. So for him it's fair game.

He's well off so can afford a new helmet easily.

So to settle this I wanted to check my fave community the Ozbargainers!

Probably saved it from being thrown into the closest river. Fair game.

    • true. it was in middle of no where. As another person mentioned LIME have this issue and no simple way to report/return these if lost

  • +10

A person can be charged with theft if they find something belonging to another person and keep it or deal with it as if they are its owner. Police recommend that any item found should always be taken to a police station. If it is not claimed within a three-month period, then the finder may take ownership of it.

    • +2

Yes and in this case, the owner is obvious.

      • +3

his defence was that as the person who LOST it would have paid the fine for a new one. the LIME company doesnt own it anymore. Still he's making assumptions here and was weird for such a low value item. I wouldnt want to ride around with a LIME helmet and announce that I had stolen property haha

  • +2

    Straight theft.

  • +7

I'd be cautious about buying a second hand helmet, let alone finding one.

    • +4

Those lime helmets would have been dropped on the ground so many times.

  • +3

    wtf is this poll?

  • +1

Your friend is a thief /thread

  • +1

sounds like an idiot. why would you risk getting a criminal conviction over a $20 helmet?

  • +3

Helmets are being dumped everywhere. Lime has bigger problems than reporting your friend for theft.

    • yeah no ID on the helmet so even if he wanted to return he couldnt? I said just plop on an existing bike/scooter

      • +3

no ID? What about the word LIME? Does that give him a clue?

        • I mean no ID to say this is helmet #343 etc. If I lost a helmet and then had to pay for it and then someone found it i'd be stoked to get a refund

  • +3

    stealing 100%
    your friend is a gronk.
kick him in the balls and tell him he should have a helmet for his own helmet

    • Harsh but funny :o)

    • +1

      kick him in the balls

Doesn’t work, he’s wearing a stolen abdominal guard

  • Get on with your life.

    • +1

ha just settling a debate with my friend.

  • +5

You friend has no idea what the history of the helmet is. He might get nits, it might be damaged. I, certainly, wouldn’t use one and I’ve seen a few around as well.

  • Helmets are not expensive, just go to Kmart for a $25 one.

  • +1

The hygiene issues alone are enough to put me off.

Interestingly, there's a lot of threads on Reddit about this issue with Lime helmets being stolen…

  • +2

I'm guessing that no one here goes skiing and rents a ski helmet. Or go karting and uses a helmet from the go kart place. Or sky diving.

for your friend, Aldi had helmets for sale a few weeks ago, the stores around me still have a few on the tables for $20

    • +2

The odds are, in both those cases, the helmet would be inspected for damage and disinfected. Also they would be much better quality than the stuff that Lime has.

      • You really think those helmets are disinfected? Even if they are, surely the person with the Lime helmet can also disinfect it…

  • theft and i could find better things to ponder over…

  • I very much doubt he/she will be prosecuted but clearly it is theft.

Imagine someone having some sign post or metal pipes clearly marked as "XYZ council" and then alleged "I found them …"

Return the helmet (put it into another Lime bike basket) as soon as possible … your friend to return it, I mean … ;-)

    • haha it's not me! my friend is annoying I poisoned the poll by saying he was rich but I thought it was important context

The moral compass is weak in your friend …

An article in 2019 showed that in 6 months operating in Brisbane, they distributed 750 scooters and 11000 helmets.
They had 60 helmets lost or stolen PER DAY in Brisbane during their first 6 months.

Frankly, I think they're a crap company and I have no sympathy for them, but it is technically theft.
But I don't think they would miss it.

I'm in the same situation ie….found a Lime helmet just lying on the road. They are good quality helmets and I cleaned and sanitized this one to look like new. I've done everything I can to RETURN the helmet. Lime HQ has all my details with all the details of finding the lost helmet. They said they would refer my enquiry to a local operator and they would be in touch. That was 6 months ago. I wanted to be honest but they don't seem to want the helmet back!?? So…a respray to shut all the Karens up…and thank you Lime!
