  • Anyone use this gift card before? Not much info available on the website…. Does it mean it likes a prepaid credit card to use anywhere?

    • I have. They act as a standard credit card, but you need to use them online or through Google pay through a phone with NFC if using in-store.

They list a whole bunch of stores they're valid at, but afaik you can use them anywhere

tl;dr Special gift cards are prepaid Mastercard gift cards that can only be redeemed at specific Merchant Category Codes (MCC).

Special gift cards are (quite frankly) weird. You will see there are multiple different types of Special gift cards; picking the right gift card is important. You will see on each page for a Special gift card a description of the type of merchants that each gift card can be used at, and this is unfortunately the only indication of the MCCs that may or may not be permitted for each gift card:

      • Super Shopper: The Super Shopper Card can be used at shopping retailers Australia-wide.

      • Fine Foodie: The Fine Foodie Card can be used at every restaurant, whether it’s 5-stars or drive-thru Australia-wide.

      • Latte Lover: The Latte Lover Card can be used at every coffee shop and cafe, Australia-wide.

      • Pub Crawler: The Pub Crawler Card can be used at every pub, club & bar, Australia-wide.

The thing to keep in mind is that no one (not even Special) have a definitive list of retailers for each gift card, because it actually makes no sense for Special to maintain such a list. The merchant’s payment provider (i.e. the company that provides the physical EFTPOS terminals or the online payment platforms to a merchant) are the ones who determine the MCC for the merchant. In other words, neither Special nor the merchant have control over the MCC for a merchant, which means that if Special kept a list and then a merchant had their MCC changed for whatever reason, Special would need to remember to update it. Considering there are hundreds of thousands of merchants that would accept Special gift cards across Australia, it simply makes no sense to keep such a list. (There actually used to be a list of featured retailers on each Special gift card page, but I just checked and there is no more list at all!)

And before some points out you can use Special gift cards everywhere, you cannot used them everywhere. For example:

      • You cannot use the Super Shopper gift card for utility payments, health insurance payments or ATO payments.

      • You cannot use the Pub Crawler gift card at a bottleshop (e.g. First Choice Liquor, BWS).

      • You cannot use the Latte Lover gift card at a supermarket (even Woolworths Metro locations with a barista).

      • You cannot use the Chill Seeker gift card to purchase gift cards from online gift card portals.

Also, keep in mind that Special gift cards are prepaid gift cards, so they do not support 3-D Secure (which is a security feature that some online merchants mandate before accepting a card as a payment method for card-not-present transactions - including online transactions).

My pick of the bunch would be the Super Shopper gift card, because I have redeemed it at online gift card portals (at least ones that do not mandate 3-D Secure), supermarkets and even the parking station for the shopping centre where I park to get to the supermarket. I have seen reports of other people using it at Amazon, so it offers (probably) the best flexibility if you want a gift card that can be redeemed at a variety of retailers.

But when you search nothing can be found. So where can you use these cards? Does it work in WW, Coles or Bunnings?

    Oops, no results found.

      I use them on SB.

      • Which one did you buy, I would be happy with that.

        • +1

          Super Shopper.

    • Mine worked fine at supermarkets (tried at Aldi, Coles, WW), but not at Bunnings.

    • Which Special gift card are you looking at? Different Special gift cards work at different types of merchants.

      • I looked at home and garden

        • +1

I presume it would work at Bunnings, because Bunnings is a home improvement store, so it would logically fit there. However, I don’t know for certain, because Special does not publish what are the permitted MCCs for each gift card! I also don’t know whether Bunnings actually accepts Special gift cards, so there is that too…

I would question whether that Home and Garden gift card would work at Coles or Woolworths. Although Coles and Woolworths sell home and garden products, they use the MCC for a supermarket (unless you are getting cashout via the EFTPOS network). The question is whether Special whitelisted the MCC for supermarkets… to be honest, I doubt it.

You could get a Super Shopper gift card instead. It worked for me in the past instore at Coles and Woolworths (and I know that from experience). I’m not sure if it works at Bunnings. However, if it does not, just use the Supper Shopper gift card to purchase a Bunnings gift card (or multiple Bunnings gift cards) at Coles.

  • Is this for the credit card holders only and not if one has a savings account?

    • It reads eligible CB debit or credit Mastercard.
I don't think you can have a debit card without a transaction account

      Eligibility criteria for the product:

To hold a Debit Mastercard, you will need to satisfy certain eligibility criteria, including that you must:

      Be individual;
      Be aged 14 years or older, or aged 9 – 13 years with parent/guardian permission to operate account;
Have an Australian residential address, or be moving to Australia in the near future; and
Have an eligible CBA transaction account to which the card will be linked.

  • Can Super Shopper be used for Costco? It does not show anything on their website

    • +1

Great idea. I just did they same thing. Thanks.

    • Isn't there $3 bonus today?

      • +1

I had already taken advantage of that before I saw the cashback from CommBank.. haha

    • Which special gc can be used at shopback?

  • +1

It appears for me today. These offers are certainly a good reason to hold onto the CBA Low Fee.

  • I never got the ID verification SMS when used the card directly on the desktop. It worked in the Special App via GPay (without ID verification). Statement credit has been received. Just share this to the people in a similar situation.

thanks just checked my app rewards and received it too!
