I don't like the latency in the wireless keyboards.
Makes it harder to post comments quickly.

    • +39

Neither. Makes it slower to neg JVs posts

        • +3

No bolded words? Are you okay jv?

          • +3

@bozzonac: probably the "star" on the keyboard finally died from overuse

as a supportive community which we are, we should crowd fund one for jv to keep Ozbargain a happy place

      • +3

You need a wireless mouse in that case.

    • i c a n' t m ak e o u twh at yo u' r e t r yi ngt os a y ?

    Good deal.

Note that the keyboard uses the Bolt receiver and isn't compatible with the Unifying, so if you have a mouse on the Unifying one you'll either need 2 dongles or to upgrade your mouse too.

I got one of these and a MX Master 3S which is also Bolt so I have 2 dongles - one for my work laptop and one for my desktop.

    • +1

That is exactly why I bought the MX Mechanical. I have a 3s and couldn't find a MX Keys for Business locally in AU which works off Bolt.

  • +1

How do these compare to the G915?

    • +1

I would take G915 over this. But if it is more than a $50 difference, this is the better deal imo.

    • I prefer the typing on this keyboard (sounds more like a well-lubed mechanical keyboard) but G915 has nicer lighting and extra buttons

      • +2

I had both G915 and TKL. I sent back the full size as smaller size gives more space for the mouse and you dont have to stretch your hand to the right to use the mouse. Feels more natural. I dont like the extra buttons as I accidently tend to press them instead of CTRL - happens with my G613.

Still getting used to using number keys as I was so used to using numpad.

  • The K600 TV keyboard is $49, not $79.

    • Fixed. Even better. Was $79 when I posted (I think)

    • Its showing $79

Get a Keychron hot swap with Gaterons for that kind of money. Much better experience.

    • Why not hot swap opticals? Was looking at the Mints..

Anyway you get better wireless and much better battery life on the Logitech's though. Depends on what you're looking for.

      • I mistakingly bought a hot swap optical K8. You can't buy the optical switches so it's pointless.

    • +4

I think for productivity and compatibility Logitech is better.

      • +2

        How so?

      • Agreed. In terms of using it, I think both are fine. But I find the connectivity of the Logitech a lot better. In my experience, the Keychron disconnected more and it was slower to connect and switch to different devices. But I do like that you can use the Keychron wired which solves that issue.

    • +5

Logitech, Razor, and all those 'gaming' brands sell overpriced keyboards in my view. I currently use a Keychron Q2 with Gateron Brown Pro switches. They are pre-lubed and the typing experience is amazing ($280 shipped). If you want to spend less all the other Keychron K boards are still very good if you lube your switches. Takes a couple of hours but is worth it.

Additionally, I can completely customize my Q2. I have programmed some key combos for frequently used strings (T + Y = 'Thank you'), or double tab on left shift activates caps lock for one word and then automatically goes back to normal.

Optical switches are also a good choice but I would not bother as there are limited options available.

      • Does lubing just reduce key travel and mushiness? Is it annoying to have to lube each key separately?

        • +2

Lubing switches makes them feel and sound smoother. It's quite a difference if combined with a decent board and some sound dampening foam. I also have a 40% Planck board which feels super smooth and it's tiny to not take up much desk space.

          • @Lonestar80: Thanks - very helpful, as are the comments below @lyle88 @skittlebrau. I'm this close to buying the Moonlander… If one is paying $280 for a Keychron, I figure why not go all the way and pay another $120 for the Moonlander? :P The way they bill it as the keyboard that will last you years is enticing. Can get other keycaps for it later on, software seems great, etc. Main risk is I may hate the ergonomics, and I've never used columnar layout before.

Having said that, if someone can recommend a solid entry level mechanical KB option cheaper than the Keychron but highly customisable, hot swappable, etc then I'm all ears.

            • +1

@gryphondarks: Jumping straight into a split ortholinear keyboard is a big change. Not saying you won't be able to get used to it but it will be something that you will need to actively practice most likely.

If you are not sure about layouts, your best bet is to try other people's boards at a local Meetup (there are usually one/two per year in melb/Syd, also others elsewhere).

In terms of "lasting years", any decent mechanical keyboard will last years, probably decades. If the PCB is supported in VIA it is very easy to reprogram (now with a web based GUI), and VIA is constantly being worked on.

To know what to recommend, you would need to say what layout you want (40/60/65/TKL/96/1800/full-size).

Alternatively, what do you use it for most often?

              • @DeToxin: My purpose is to have an optimally ergonomic set up. So my next KB won't have a number pad as it reduces distance to mouse (side note: I've trained myself up, fairly successfully, to use the mouse left handed to reduce over reliance on the right hand). So I suppose TKL would be good, but I don't know how much smaller % size KB would be better.

Use case is general office based work, shitloads of word processing, writing journal articles, etc. Occasional gaming. I do enjoy typing, if that's not a weird thing to say. It literally feels like… playing a keyboard. Thus the next thing I need to consdier is what key switches best suit that.

                • @gryphondarks: Asking about smaller %:
I don't use home/end/ins/del/pgup/pgdn often so I'm not a fan of TKLs. I also prefer left fn + IJKL for arrows, then build my other nav keys around them with fn layer. I use a 60 and find it fine for everything I do at home (gaming mostly, sometimes I WFH but not in huge need of numpad).

Enjoying typing is not weird, lots of people do. I've gone full circle with switches, after probably a dozen or more builds I've come back to light tactiles. MX browns, Pewters, Aliaz. Again, unless you like linear where there are some objectively better choices, best to try a bunch at a meetup.

I've got a separate numpad on the way to use with my 60% at home which will go somewhere in front of my mouse

            • @gryphondarks: I am getting a Corne V3 kit split ortholinear next and solder myself. Much cheaper that way. For me, split is the next logical step. The Corne would be similar to my Planck but just split in half. I can reuse my custom keymap as well.

I'd say that the Moonlander is a great option if you don't want to build yourself. I have a few colleagues (software engineers) on split keyboards, and one has the Moonlander.

      • +6

As someone who also has a bunch of custom mechanical boards, you're preaching to the wrong audience.
Not many people want to spend a couple of hours lubing switches, and I would argue that most people wouldn't even think of the difference as being significant or worthwhile.

One thing I dislike about the Keychron Q series is that it’s a bit of a tank and the overall profile is quite high so you need a wrist rest for long term ergonomic use. Plus it needs a bit more dampening because it feels quite hollow sounding if you’re being picky. Great keyboard though - I have the Q1 v2.

        • +1

          hollow sounding

Force break mod totally fixed this for my Q3. Such a cheap and easy mod, definitely worth doing for any metal construction KBs with a hollow sound.

      • I found this helpful in making my decision.

Ugly grey just like every house built in the last 10 years. We may as well go back to monochromatic monitors and black & white TVs since nobody uses colour, just luma.

Please, it's time to rediscover the electromagnetic spectrum. Colour is beautiful.

    • such a weird hill to die on, people buy the colour they like, that's why it's selling.

if you want a lime green chrome house, then chrome yours lime green.

don't mistake just wanting a different colour equates to originality or creativity, its on the contrary, when given a plain blank canvas, not realising the potential to change it, but just complains about it.

How do these compare to Mx keys? does anyone have a preference which one is better for tpying over long periods?

    • +1

Im keen to know this too. I have the MX Keys. Love it.

    • Also keen to know the feedback to this question.

  • What $20 free Westpac giftcard?

    • I had one free gift card from my Westpac credit card. No specific deal on it. Was just sitting around.

  • How come I can't use the code "SNSMD2" at checkout? Showed "Wrong code, please double-check and try again."

Is it because I didn't use MX Mechanical Keyboard?

    • +1

Works on eBay link only. Not on Amazon.

    • got same error, no idea why SNSMD2 not working on ebay.

      • +1

Getting a randomised 16 digit code starting with SNSMD2xxxxxxxxxxx. Try opening the page in a mobile browser and check if you see the "Take AU $15 off this item" link below the product title.

The following is important to mention :

    (1) Requires Logi Options+ software, available for Windows® and macOS
    (2) Not compatible with Logitech Unifying technology
    (3) Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions
    (4) Device basic functions will be supported without software for operating systems other than Windows and macOS

  • IS SNSMD2 a dead code/targeted? Cant get it to work on my account. SNSOCT worked for $10 off.
