I am typing this on a Gen3, and find it great for office/web type tasks.
But if I was buying today I would definitely spend the extra $50 for the Gen5.

gen5 also has LTE which is awesome

I mean, i had a samsung book 12, it had a i5-7200u and i must say, as a basic laptop it was okay, but struggle multi-tasking.

I agree, dual-core intel CPUs just don't cut it anymore, would recommend finding at least an 8th gen CPU

    • If you care about the screen, avoid Gen3. Have used plenty of X1 Carbons at work up until recent weeks, and the Gen3 screens are terribly washed out with bad viewing angles. Gen4 and beyond are MUCH better.

As other have pointed out though, dual core for all of the X1's here isn't much fun these days.

      Nice laptops otherwise.

      • Mine is the higher resolution touch screen. I think it is ok, at least I’ve never been bothered by it.

        • Good point of difference, the ones I encounter with work are non-touch 1080p.

  • the Carbon Gen5 has TB4 and can be charged from usb C ?

    duh too slow… far out

  • Can any of these run Fortnite?

    • the i7, would have a good change with graphics turned down, nothing else.

    Gen5 OOS

  • how legit are these batteries?

Smartcom Computer has listed some refurbished Lenovo laptops seems decent.

None of these are listed as refurbished.

Condition is "Used" and there's no mention of them being refurbished anywhere in the descriptions.

The Carbon Gen5 even sounds like they are damaged.

“May have some bruising on screen.”

      too much hassle

    • yeah agree where is the blue tick showing that the seller is authorised refub ? weird but the code works

  • did they have 2 of each - its all OOS already , pffff

    • Still showing in stock for me

      • was referring to gen 5

    already OOS

  • oof, looking like a great Torrent download machine

Why not get a cheap desktop like this for half the price ?

      • Not a bad idea but I like the laptop small form factor to carry around to the couch, hide in a draw etc. Only thing it needs connected to it is a power cord also.

        • +1

You can run a desktop headless (i.e: without any peripherals just with a power cable) and remote into it. I do that with my home server / NAS which is an old Dell optiplex hidden away in a closet.

          • @opt: Pardon my ignorance but I do it old school by putting the video file on a usb and plugging into TV. How do you stream it to the tv?

            • @mavis30551: i guess: installing NAS o/s on that, then running plex server or other media server on it.
then you need to have TV that support plex client (or just samba to access the pc, you dont need server-client relationship).
both need to be on the same local wifi of course

edit. oh you dont even need to install nas o/s actually. but this im not sure

        • +4

correct. need to hide it when downloading linux distros

    • I been using this for a few years. Really happy with it https://www.amazon.com.au/Synology-Bay-DiskStation-DS120j-Di…

I have a gen 3 which i purchased just before covid
3 years later and it still performs strong.
Its fallen from my car at 60kph and barely had a scratch on it.
    Fantastic keyboard

Only downside is cant upgrade the ram.

    The "Dell Latitude 7490" isn't FHD, it's 1366x768

  • Are we shortening gigabyte from GB to G now? Took me a couple of reads to figure out what I was looking at there.

    • The most condensed PC listings have used this format for a long time.

      • Come to think of it you're right. I still hate it 😂
