  • all i want to know is when I can cancel my Apple Music Family Membership. is there any comparison done on paid Apple Music vs Spotify vs Youtube Music vs Amazon Prime Music??

    • +1

Any Apple Music sub and Spotify Premium would be superior to this service for sound quality and music access. You can just ask for the song you want. Some prefer the Spotify discovery process. Others prefer the Apple integration.
This prime service is OK if you just want background music and treat it as a perk of a Prime subscription.

  • Prime music app doesn't work with Siri, so you can't get Siri to play songs in Prime.

For voice control, Alexa only works when Prime music app is active. When it does, it hijacks "Hi Siri", only listens for "Alexa".

  • They knew we have cheap Tidal?

  • +1

I guess this change is subjective… From what I read, most people here seem to be against it (could be a vocal minority however). For my personal situation, I think it works out better. I'm on a trial of Music Unlimited, so I won't experience this exactly until the trial ends but I almost always play my liked playlist on shuffle anyway so now I will be able to access that and not need to pay for the Music Unlimited plan.

We'll see how annoying it ends up being and what the reduction in sound quality means, but from what I am seeing it all sounds like a win to me.

I think I'm in the same boat as you. My only use for Amazon Music is to have background music around the house using a bunch of Echos in a multi-room grouping. (I wanted multi-room audio, but am too cheap to buy a Sonos for every room. Echo + Prime Music was a reasonable alternative at a small fraction of the price)

The playlist is always on shuffle mode anyway… so what I guess this means now is that instead of having 2 million songs to choose from, I have the full 100 million. Which is great. So long as I can still build my own playlists to shuffle from… will have to check that.

For someone actively listening and choosing music this change would suck - though the 2 million song collection had enough notable omissions to suck for that purpose anyway.

    • Except it's not your playlist. If you're lucky, you'll get one song you searched for, but more likely it will be shuffled with a bunch of other random songs you have to listen to first. You can't seek through the song, and you have limited skips per month too (I don't know the number but it's not many, I've used all mine up already on one playlist just messing about with it.

Already had enough of it. I've got Spotify family plan anyway but still a downgrade for Amazon.

      • So if I play my "liked music" playlist that gets generated from all my likes, does that mean it'll play songs similar but outside those I've liked?

        • As far as I can tell, yeah but I may be wrong. TBH I'm finding the whole app pretty frustrating to use now if you're doing anything other than hitting Shuffle on some curated playlist.

  • Its kind of crap from what i've seen so far. You can't either move backwards or forwards through a song, that function is now apparently for Unlimited users.

    • You are also restricted as to how many songs you can skip.

No one else noticed that many podcasts listened to using the Amazon music app are now advertising free?

I just listened to a whole episode of The Economist podcast and no ads is a win :)

  • Tried it and the compression of the files is gross. When comparing to YouTube Music and Amazon, at the highest quality setting they offer, YTM sounds much better.

  • For some bizzare reason I’m a prime member but can only get music basic or an upsell to unlimited. When I try and get the app to work it doesn’t recognise my prime membership. Any suggestions?

  • I don’t understand why Amazon is promoting this. Since yesterday, I was unable to play any specific songs on my echo group like I used to, which made me very confused. I suspect this “upgrade” is the reason why :/. I do understand they increased the number of songs by 50 times but they made shuffling mandatory now

  • Not a deal.

  • +3

Negging the deal for reasons above.

"Increasing from 2 million songs on-demand to over 100 million songs in shuffle mode" should be "Losing access to 2 million on-demand songs" to be replaced with 100 million in shuffle (which is not useful to some people) and limited playlists."

This is a downgrade, or at best a sidegrade and not a bargain. If you already have Prime it's okay to know about but for a lot of people it's not a selling point and is actually a step back from what they had when they signed up for Prime.

"Your negative vote on this post has been revoked by the community as this comment of yours has received too many negative votes."

Apparently I'm slow and I need the occasional reminder of why contributing anything on Ozbargain is an absolute waste of time to be rewarded by a metaphoric slap in the face. Hey at least I wasn't sin binned for a month like the first time I posted a couple of negative votes on a deal (because I didn't comment when negging). But it's all okay guys because this place supports RUOK day. What a joke!

  • TLDL However, this is a double edged sword, all my downloaded to device albums (for offline play), now only play in shuffle with other songs, they don’t play as the album only like they used to.

Not only that, I upgraded to latest on one device, and when I realised the shuffle, checked on other device and it wouldn’t allow access to library before I upgraded.

This is a downgrade of the service of limited songs in an attempt to persuade users to buy a subscription to music unlimited, for the functionality that was previously included in the prime only subscription. More songs yes, less functionality.

    • Even worse, I see over on Reddit ppl saying songs they've purchased will now only play in shuffle mode…

Gotta love the CSRs response when one customer asked about… "Do not worry about it"

  • Am I right in saying they've removed the 40 hour limit that used to exist on Prime Music?

  • To be clear, it's not shuffling everything but lots of playlists of different genres to choose to playback. I actually really like it and use it regularly. We have YouTube premium too, music for me and ad free YouTube for the wife but if it wasn't for that, I'd probably be content with what prime music serves up. I very rarely look for one individual song to play on YouTube music anyway.

Chill electronic is an exceptionally good mix to nap to. I've been using that one playlist for two years.

  • This is an anti deal. Now you can’t listen to the songs you want instead they give you a shit song and no way to skip it.

  • +1

Wow, I wouldn't have thought that there would be 100 million songs in existence. I only have about 1,000 mp3s.

  • I've tried them all. I find Amazon Music Unlimited the best, but it is outrageously over-priced. I've only used the 6 month free trial in the past.

These days I prefer to listen to my own music rather than a bunch of random crap being pushed on me. If I like a song/album enough, I get the mp3 or FLAC and store them on my Synology NAS. I then use Amazon Alexa to serve them up via their Echo Show or Echo Spot home automation hardware connected to high quality bluetooth speakers. I use the free Alexa skill "AudioStation" which works with Synology only. I can ask for songs by name, by artist, by album, or playlist. https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Inc-Audio-Station/dp/B076PBX…

  • They fixed it I think
