Fortis 80kg Smart Adjustable Dumbbells 2-Pack $259 ($249 with FIRST) + Delivery (e.g. $148 to SYD/MEL, $181 to BNE) @ Kogan

170

Ew Kogan.
But surprisingly decent price for the 2 x 40kg Fortis adjustable dummbell set.

I have the 2 x 24kg set and found them to be actually pretty decent and fit nicely in my humble little garage gym. Outgrown the 24's for a while now, and for at least the last 6 months of watching the price the 2 x 40's only ever dropped down to about $330 + shipping.

Shipping varies and is a bit of a killer (but I mean you need to consider its literally shipping 80+kg) but from what I've checked:

$180.99 TO 4000
$147.99 to 3000 / 2000

Supports weights of 5kg - 40kg in increments.

While this is a killer price on these (and you’d struggle to get used ones for much cheaper), it’s worth pointing out that these have plastic internals and can/will break if you drop them - which is specifically excluded by the warranty.

Obviously ymmv and everyone has their own budget, but if you are pressing forties it is probably worth spending a bit more on something safe and bulletproof, or just accepting the hassle of spinlocks/oly handles.

I was going to outline in my OP that yes, I baby the hell out of the 2 x 24's.
Not useable for rapid drop sets.

When I was still going to commercial gyms before covid I would always gently put down my weights anyway.

I would always gently put down my weights anyway.

Gyms should ban people who do it any other way!

        *grumble grumble

People can be obnoxious, but weightlifting isn't silent when you're near personal limits and it's often safer to drop the weights with something like a dumbbell shoulder press etc.

      • +1

Unless 40kg is your warm-up there isn't really an easy way to put these down gently all the time, especially for things like dumbbell presses. Even shoulder presses it's hard if you're near failure. I tried padding the ground with pillows and foam but still managed to break them.

The 24kg makes more sense. The 40kg is a bit much for the average person not to drop occasionally.

Definitely right on the plastic internals, broke so easily on my set

    • Anything you recommend that's all metal and tough?

In this price bracket? Only your basic spinlocks, which you can get for 350-375ish for 40kg per hand but you could pick them up for half that on gumtree. Obviously super slow to change, but a second set of handles costs peanuts so supersetting isn't really an issue. The biggest downside is that trying to kick them up with your knees for flat/incline benching is horrible.

In adjustables, your main options are gonna be powerblocks (which are weird but super quick to change) or ironmasters (which are the closest thing to fixed dumbells but slower to change). Roughly $1100/$1300 to get to this kind of weight per hand, though.

Nuobells looks great as well, but no personal experience.

I've got ironmasters. Here they are being chucked down a lift shaft: https://youtu.be/E25yk51lcaI

        • If I had the income for that kind of impulse buy I’d totally have gone for iron masters. Good resale, and considered the GOLD STANDARD for adjustables

        • Nuobells look very interesting…not many options in adjustable where the size of the dumbell reduces as you go down in weight.

          I wonder if 32x2kg Nuobell ~$1300 = Cortex at $1000 = Sumo at ~$700 delivered

(all with stand and delivery included)

actually nuobell looks slightly different from the other two, slightly different grip section and weight selector area

  • Dangit I've been waiting for a good deal on the 2 x 24kg and got excited for a moment

Question for people with dumbbells at home:

Do you keep em on the floor or do you have them raised somehow?

Is there any such thing as a reasonably priced generic dumbbell stand? I find it helps with motivation to have em raised but can't seem to find anything apart from $100+ racks

    • Depends what weight range you have I guess.
For a while I was keeping my small selection of light fixed dumbbells and kettlebells (up to 24kg only) on one of those metal racks as seen frequently on here from Bunnings/sca.

    • Kmart one is good value at $59 if you can find one, but note that the middle rack isn't spaced evenly like the main photo suggests. Look at how the bolt holes for the horizontal bars differ across both photos.

      • Good price but can it hold spinlock dumbbells?

Edit: “Suitable for dumbells and kettlebells 6kg to 15kg”

  • Crazy - can't believe I got this for $289 (+free delivery) from Kogan June 2021. Must've been lucky/on clearance

  • I have the 2x24kg, one of them is stuck in the rack and I can't get it out. :/

    • +1

i did have one of my 24kg ones get stuck before, but i just gently rocked it up and down, and twisted the dials in different directions to try and dis-engage the lock.
Havent had a problem since then.

      • +1

I tried slamming it repeatedly on the floor, didn't work, I'll try your method! I was thinking WD40 might work.

        • +1

take a look at the one that isnt stuck and note how the teeth engage/disengage, you COULD try wd40 but Im not really sure in this instance it will help.
