Discount benefits of a .gov email address?

HI Guys, I recently started at an amazing new job in the government so that comes with a .gov.au email account. I had a thought that there may be some similar discounts/benefits to having .edu email accounts?

Are there any benefits/discounts you know of?

Thanks in advance.

If you have cia.gov on your Business Card you can use a "Company" Cheque to rent a Helicopter… https://tinyurl.com/2rrt3z5f

and with a "fully equipped" Helicopter, you can form your own .gov

    I'm glad we talked. lol

In my experience, businesses usually charge government clients more, not give them a discount.

  • you might be eligible for cheaper microsoft windows or office. Sadly office is a subscription these days

Many workplaces (not just gov) offer free Microsoft Office for 1-2 home computers for each employee, so it might even be free.

      • Microsoft that the free Office program. This is no longer available. All that is available is a discount of O365.

    • Sadly office is a subscription these days

People keep saying that but it is not true.

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/microsoft-365/p/office-home-…

      • Yeah, but can you get that as part of the home use program?

        • You can outright purchase Office Home & Student if you choose to.

Here is a page that compares Office365 Family, Office365 Personal, and the outright purchase of Home & Office 2021.

You can make your own decision about whether it is worth a one-time purchase vs paying an ongoing subscription, but you still do have to option of a one-off payment if you want to.

    • Good thing I hung onto my copy of Office University 2010

Perhaps read the APS code of conduct first? 😉

You would want to check your agencies internal gifts and benefits policy first, as it gets blurry in regards to "not improperly use inside information or the employee's duties, status, power or authority to gain, or seek to gain, a benefit or an advantage for the employee or any other person"

Our integrity team pretty much says "no, you may not use any gov.au benefits/discounts, you must decline them unless they are listed on this page", it would also violate the "don't use your gov email for personal reasons policy".
The Samsung EPP is explicitly called out as not approved as it was setup by Samsung without approval or consultation from the public service commission (APSC).

(as I often joke with our integrity people, who I deal with often on unrelated matters) Enjoy the 15.4% super!

  • Apart from a mortgage lender seeing you as a safe bet there isn't much discounts that I am aware of. Government certainly doesn't give anything free to its employees. I know the Federal employees need to pay for their own tea and coffee. There are no free Christmas lunches. BTW, any free perks as part of your package are subject of the fringe benefits tax. Although one thing generally applies to most government roles is the quality of work life balance. Note generally though, because you might get a manager who doesn't believe in this.

  • Health.Gov addresses still have a few following COVID…

  • Merged from What Special Deals Are Available to Government Employees

    Hi all,

We all know about Samsung Government employees scheme (amongst offering this scheme to other companies), my question is
What other special deals are out there for Government (Federal, State, Territory) employees?

Any deals on buying a vehicle, home loans, services, etc?

    Cheers

Seems like the answer is no and this explanation makes sense: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12891192/redir

There’s no real reason for gov employees to get special discounts.

Salary sacrifice/novated leases are the most common one. A few gov employees I know do it. Teachers also get a bunch of discounts/free stuff in the hope they will use said products in front of/with students to get them in the ecosystem.

    • I heard that police don't have to pay for what they order at McDonald's if they are in a squad car.

      • That used to be a common thing but not anymore really, except for the Maccas stores in troubled neighbourhoods and even then they only offer around 50% off now.

      • What is a "squad car"?

        • Police cruiser.

          • -1

            @AustriaBargain: A police cruiser????

Given that in Australia our police use a variety of vehicles, from BMW sedans to converted 4WDs and utes; do you mean a marked police vehicle?

      Kickbacks?
At least a couple of resourceful gov employees make it to news media every month.

Have you tried setting up your own overseas trade commissioners job for a dirty 1/2 million a year + incidentals?

In my dealings with most government employees from a council level to federal level, most are already over paid when compared to how much work they output.

You are asking the wrong group.

Message John Barilaro, from what the news says, he is receiving all these benefits for very little talent.

    • Government Employees are very broad… employees working for what department? Like above said, as a teacher I can get free membership to some stuff such as Canva, my edu account also allows for better pricing at times. On top of that, paid subscription-based educational services can be claimed during tax time.

    • Higher super contributions, job security, can claim many things as tax deductions, good salary increases, union, lower working hours?

    • Samsung Government? Thought Apple would be the first to start their own government.

    • Didn't ask at job interview / contract review stage?
