THIS IS NOT A CHARGING CABLE 👿👿

Pretty good price for a coiled cable with aviator connector. The other cheaper ones on Amazon are a single continuous cable with a coil.
I paid more around ~$45 for a similar one from Aliexpress over a year ago before the USD spike.
Fulfilled by Amazon and Free shipping with Prime. 3 Day delivery estimate.

There are a couple of colors available. Black is $30.98 and 2 options are $36. There is one vibrant colored option for $31.47 if you can find it 😏.

Warning these are only for keyboards and designed to carry only around 5V/0.5A of power together with data.
👿👿DO NOT use these to charge phones or any other devices. If you do you will cause damage to your charger, your device or both. Worst case scenario your charger can melt and catch on fire.

Some of the negative reviews seem to indicate their keyboard having intermittent connection. This can happen with keyboards that consume a lot of power. The DROP CTRL is one of those keyboards so I can confirm that 1 star review is due to this issue.
Another example of a high power consumption keyboard would be a Full size keyboard with per key RGB. A 60% keyboard with per key RGB is typically fine.
The reason being the coil part of the cable is much longer than you think, the coil by itself which is only 20 to 25cm in width adds about 1.5 to 2m to the total length of the cable.
The straight part of the cable is 1.2m so you might want to make sure it's enough length is your PC is under your desk.

For you keyboard noobs out there.

Make sure to double check your keyboard has a USB-C port before buying. Some budget models sometimes use Type-B mini or MicroUSB.

    • +2

      Type-B mini or MicroUSB

      ewwwwwwwwwwwww

        I think it's kinky 😏.

Nice price, especially for aviator cables. Good explanation as well OP

    • +7

Yeah thought the keyboard hobby might not be that popular here judging by the responses on a recent forum post.

So I just needed to make it clear that this is NOT a charging cable. And especially NOT a USB-C Fast charging cable. Don't want someone trying to charge something with one of these overnight and wake up to smoke or something burning.

  • +12

Gots tons (>10) of keyboard. But I will never use an aviator cable, is just too douche for me 😅

    • +5

I prefer straight cables myself now after getting a coiled one as a newbie.

But yeah they seem pretty popular among newcomers. e.g. for most budget 60% keyboards.

      • +4

Real hardcore gamers hate the extra lag caused by the inductance of a coiled keyboard cable. Straight cables, as short as possible for those who want to shave off the last extra few hundred picoseconds of their fragging time ;-)

    • +5

Problem with coiled i find is, if you ever need to move keyboard around a bit eg for drawing/writing on desk, the cable looks all weird. Needs to be perfectly lined up to look nice.

      • -1

Doesn't have to be perfectly straight. When I used mine I liked having it all wonky.

If you have major OCD I remember someone sharing a video where they would roll up some thick paper cut to size inside a marker pen, then insert that through the coil and then remove the marker so it keeps it perfectly straight lol.

        • Edit: paper cut to size AROUND a marker pen,

I might be revealing myself as the biggest keyboard noob of all time, but what's wrong with wireless keyboards?

      • +1

Nothing wrong with wireless. I have a few wireless keyboards myself.
Got to be 2.4Ghz with USB dongle though none of that bluetooth auto sleep and delayed wake up nonsense plus miserable battery life.

I have the HP Envy Dual Mode wireless keyboard. It uses chiclet key mechanism so it's like an Apple Magic keyboard but for windows. One of my favorite keyboard to type on just because you can type so lightly on it.
It's currently $149, but I got it from JB HiFi when it was on sale for $79. Used my JB Perks coupon for a further $10 off and it has been great. Feels heavy and premium too.
What happened to those $10 off no minimum spend Perks coupons by the way? They just suddenly stopped.

      • -2

nothing wrong with it, but when you step up to high end custom keyboards, they are all coiled.

    • And having over 10 keyboards is not of course…

      • If im using all of them at once then yeah. But im only using 1 at a time and the rest are tucked on drawers.

    • +2

      Just let people enjoy things

  • -4

So what's the point of spending >$30 on a keyboard cable (without the keyboard itself)?

    • +4

Some people think they look nice. Personally I prefer straight cable with no aviator connector on it.

    • What kind of keyboard do you recommend?

      • I have a jelly, i recommend jelly.

Oh hey Hugh Mungus is in the building 😂.

    • +3

You probably just missed seeing the trend on the mechanical keyboards hobby.

It really picked up during covid when people were stuck at home and needed to buy more things to keep them busy. I jumped in on it myself but just didn't really get too deep into it like some do. But I did have an increased interest in different types of keyboard though, so yeah I have a few now when I can only use one at a time lol.

      • -4

Mechanical keyboards I understand, but trend in keyboard cables? So this is one of those useless things people who have been stuck at home during COVID-19 outbreak, and have no where to spend their money decided to waste on these which offer no real benefit over keyboards with built-in cables.

        • +3

"So this is one of those useless things people who have been stuck at home during COVID-19 outbreak, and have no where to spend their money decided to waste on these which offer no real benefit over keyboards with built-in cables."

Yup. Not sure what you mean by built-in cables though? You mean non removable ones? This cable won't work with those keyboards.

It's not really a trend in cables. It's just something many are exposed to in builds and end up getting because they think it's part of the hobby. Honestly I bought one early on. Didn't buy any more though lol.
Also many people in the mechanical keyboard community also have the exact same opinion as you. That it is not in anyway useful or functional, is a waste, overpriced and looks tacky.
It's just for looks. But there are also no claims of improved performance for your keyboard, so I think it's a bit different to buyer beware which is needed for audio cables.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: "Also many people in the mechanical keyboard community also have the exact same opinion as you. That it is not in anyway useful or functional, is a waste, overpriced and looks tacky."

Someone who spends $1000 on building a keyboard but has a go at someone else for buying a $30 cable needs a reality check.

            • @Dogstar: When writing that I was not referring to the $30 cable in the deal but the coiled cable market in general. The higher priced coiled cables which seem to be more popular in the hobby, such as custom ones from Cablemod add up to around $100 per cable because they ship from the US.

Also I don't want to coin hole these people with a different opinion on cables, but they tend to be the more vintage keyboard collector type or the internal hardware only type who also like Topre, Buckling springs, Alps switch keyboards etc. I think they are a bit older in age and they don't have much interest in colorful keycap sets and colorful fancy cables. I guess they dislike coiled cables in particular because it reminds them of older vintage keyboard cables, so in that sense maybe they see it as going backwards?

Anyway I don't think it's like a serious conflict or anything, the two different opinions just come from vastly different perspectives.

            • @Dogstar: Who spent that ridiculous amount of $1000 building a mechanical keyboard? Not me here.

        • Well built in cables are terrible if you have multiple keyboards (be fair, when that becomes more of a problem, I feel like you are heading into hobby territory). Even then, I will mention that I have a shitty normal usb c cable that I use as I don't find the look with aviator cables particularly attractive.

I did like coiled cables, but not something that I valued to a point where I would spend money on it (I have one that came with a keyboard I bought). Maybe I will buy this one, since it is priced reasonably compared to ones I've seen, maybe?

I think spending money for bit of satisfaction kinda is what a hobby is, isn't it? Be it for looks or whatever silly that you find "satisfaction" in.

          • @iridiumstem: I don't need multiple keyboards for each PC I own, and the built-in non-removable cable for my Corsair Strafe mechanical keyboard is still serving me well since 2016.

            • @edfoo: Hence why I said it would probably go into the hobby territory. If you have a keyboard that's plugged in all the time and don't change them around, I doubt it makes much of a difference whether the cable is removable or not.

I have few keyboards that I use, I swap them around, the fact that I can just unplug the keyboard and swap it without reaching back of the case is a feature that makes the entire process less annoying.

Do I need multiple keyboards? No.
Do I like having different keyboards? Yes.
Is it a waste of money? Eh, I got my enjoyments out of it.

            • @edfoo: Noone here is telling you what to buy. You can just skip this post and move on with your life you know?

              • @DeToxin: Noone here can tell me that I cannot post comments either.

            • @edfoo: "and the built-in non-removable cable for my Corsair Strafe mechanical keyboard is still serving me well since 2016."

Yeah I have read some resistance to "built in cables" with headphones as well. Some comments say stuff like "I am not buying it because it has a non removable cable" and "If the cable breaks I can't replace it so crappy design" etc.

I actually have a headphone with a non removable cable myself and similar to you it has served me well for years. So I don't really get what those comments are on about lol.

    • You could buy a dozen keyboards for $30 😁

  • I have a coiled/aviator cable and it's all just for a pretty display.

    Nothing useful about it. Nothing.

    • Yeah people jump on it mostly for looks.

Even the aviator connector is weird because it specifically has the ring that you screw to lock it which you have to unscrew if you want to unplug the aviator. Not really the best design for quickly switching between connection types.
They have quick release connectors for that like Lemo. Which I have, but I still don't use the switch quickly function lol. It's totally for looks.

But the one benefit of having the aviator connector over say one of those cheaper coiled cables which is just the single coiled cable, is the connector has some heft to it so if the connector sits on a deskmat it grips it a bit to stop the cable from pulling itself behind your desk and to keep the coil from becoming stretched out over time.

    • Maybe try connecting a keyboard to one end, then take the other end and connect it to your PC…

    • We do a lot of things for looks.

I had a Logitech G915 black. Then I got a G915 TKL wireless… because I liked the way it looked. Then I had to get a Microsoft numpad to keep on the side because I use it frequently (albeit I also game frequently).

A $30 cable for a bit of fancy is no big deal.

  • +1

Need a deal on keychrons q/v series

  • +4

I guess the audiophile marketing wank industry was getting too saturated. Had to find new rubes to sell to.

    • +3

It’s like taking an existing perfectly working ubiquitous standard cable and making it way more niche and way worse. It’s really hard to understand as a trend. (Like yeah sure have a coiled cable because it looks good. Wtf is aviator connector)

    • I'm still waiting on silver infused and gold plated keyboard cables that're blessed with holy water to really improve data management and jitter.

      • I hear there are premium uncoiled cables coming that reduce interference as a result of coils and reduce the distance your keystrokes have to travel, significantly improving input lag that can be evident in programs such as vim.

      • Razor have been selling gold plated USB connectors for years lmao, at least this post is a fashion item and not snake oil.

    • +2

      It's a bit different I think.
With audio bluetooth speakers is as far as I go. But from what I have read the audiophile marketing claims better sound and performance from using their cables.

While this keyboard cable doesn't really claim better keyboard function or lower latency or better accuracy etc. It's just a cable lol.

  • High Speed Charging & Sync: USB TypeC to USB-A Cable supports safe fast charging and the speed of data sync up. GunMjo coiled keyboard cable can be compatible with most USB C mechanical gaming keyboards.

??? So is it false advertising?

    • +1

I would not trust that in the description.

It's simple electronics. Long cable results in power losses especially USB cables which use very thin gauge wires inside. Over 2.5m+ of cable with thin wire inside is going to result in voltage and current loss at the end. e.g. This is just an estimate. But your power source can be outputting 5.3V/1A, but if you measure what the end of 2.5m+ is receiving will be 5V/0.6A. Even with thicker gauge wires inside there will be losses, just less so you might be getting 5.1V/0.8A at the end.

On top of that it is a power+data cable so they need to limit the gauge of the wires because both need to be separate. For something designed for connecting low power USB devices to a computer I really doubt they went the extra length to thicken the entire cable and use decent thick gauge power wires.

And going by the negative 1 star reviews, it's clear to me the wire can't supply enough power to a high powered keyboard. Which in terms of power consumption is on the low side compared to say a smart phone. My guess is the highest consumption of a keyboard won't be any higher than 5V/0.9A.

By the way a USB port on a computer can only output power between 0.5A max for USB2.0 and 0.9A max for USB3.0. So the power your device will get at the end of the cable will be less than that. And even less for a longer cable.

      • Yeh makes sense. I have bought many 3m USB c charging cables from AliExpress that provides high amp charging and the cable doesn't seem that thick, no thicker than my aviators I got from AliExpress for $20.

I've not tried aviator cables in anything other than my keyboard though.

        • Since I have not tried to make any custom cables myself, I am not an expert on how they are wired. But maybe there are methods that were developed when designing USB-PD (fast charging) that help to reduce the thickness of the cable needed.

Not sure what is fast charging for you though. For example most phone/tablet USB chargers these days are around 5V/2.4A (12watts) which is considered "slow" these days. Pretty sure USB3.1 standards regardless of connector type can achieve a max of 5V/3A (15watts), which is not much faster but some cables that support this charging speed are labelled "fast charge".
Then you have USB-C with USB-PD cables made to USB3.2 standards, with compatible devices they can achieve 9V/2A (18watts) as a starting point and I don't remember all the numbers but the most recent USB-PD specs can achieve 100watts (20V/5A) charging, but of course you need to use a cable made to the 100w specification otherwise you will run into slower charging rate or worst case scenario damage to charger and device if the cable is not made properly.

  • So I recomend these isntead,

I own 2 of these, and its very high quality

I have no issue with my m65b with all the lights on

    • Yeah that's a pretty good price. Probably because it's singles day sales now?

When I got mine from Aliexpress 12+ months ago I paid about the regular crossed out price of $37. But after GST and stuff it charged more than $44 to my paypal.

You would think GST is 10% extra but it always managed to charge more. Maybe paypal conversion fees+buyer protection.

      • I bought mine from this palce about 12 months ago, was the same price then

        • By the way the one I got was custom ordered. You could choose cable length, coil length, cable colour, extra sleeve colour and USB connector colour. Also I think I used a coupon, but it was not much discount because it only applied to $30 spend.
I know custom order shouldn't really add too much to total cost because basic materials is still the same, but worth mentioning.

Anyway I don't use coiled cable anymore I like straight braided cable now.

    • not bad, but this deal comes in tomorrow. aliexpress might make it for Christmas, lol.

  • I was today years old when I learnt these things exist

  • This can't charge my wireless keyboard?

    • Personally I would use the cable that came with the keyboard to charge it. Or if it didn't come with one I would use one that is rated at for higher power e.g. a phone charging cable.

It depends though, some bluetooth keyboards like Keychron's K series might charge slow. So power consumption might be low, like 500mA (0.5A). If you can find the keyboard charge power consumption in the specs it would help. If not personally I wouldn't risk it and just use a proper charging cable.

  • Would buy but have the keychronk2v2 that has the god awful usbc on the left instead of the top. Its been annoying me for over a year and i cant find anything reasonable in black. If anyone has a solution, lmk pls.

    • +2

A right angle USB-C adapter of some sort may fix your problems and let you use a cable with a normal plug.

      • "A right angle USB-C adapter"

Yes this is the solution. There are a few with minor differences in design with some being too chunky to fit in the Keychron K series case's port opening.
So try to get the slimmest looking right angle adapter. Some have also needed to carefully sand away the plastic on the adapter to make it fit but I think this was for the chunkier ones.

        • I thought the same but the bit wfter the connector looks real tacky as it has to curve towards the desk. Its kinda defeating the purpose of a clean af look. This website called mechables had a real nice right angled one but its wayyyy too expensive. Im almost considering doing a warranty claim for my k2kv2 and get something else (lmk if anyone has reccomendations).

          • @curryking69: Yeah if it bothers you that much maybe look for a keyboard with the port on the back.
I don't think "the connector being on the side" is valid reason for warranty claim and refund though.

      • Looking for a coiled equivalent of something like that, I got one similar to your link and tried coiling it. Didnt really work well lol.

  • These used to be expensive, but I think China has started to mass produce them so the price has gone down heaps, you can get one for around $12 on aliexpress + the super slow shipping

    https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=S…

    • +1

They do vary in terms of quality though.
I have seen reviews on the cheapest ones they tend to come with a really loose or squished deformed coil. Some of the worst ones stop working quickly due to inferior overall quality.

I am thinking these ones from Amazon AU are a safe bet because to be fulfilled by Amazon AU they must have met some kind of standard in terms of quality otherwise Amazon would not have them taking up space in their warehouse.

  • It’s okay but I prefer Akko branded ones for cheaper and more colour choices.

    • I've seen those, from the pictures it looks like the coiled cable part is completely straight at the ends.

      https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/21UcbONzcAL.AC.jpg

While the GunMjo one I posted is the popular Z shaped coil that is quite trendy. I guess people like it when the coil is aligned with the keyboard and then the cable goes straight up out of the coil and behind the desk.

  • +1

I use one of these with my DROP CTRL, can confirm it doesn't like it. I need to use a powered USB hub for it to work - works fine after plugging in the 5v.

    • Not sure why the DROP CTRL has such high power draw because I have heard of a few other TKL keyboards with per key RGB that function fine with coiled cables.
Maybe it has to do with the CTRL having both per key RGB and underglow RGB? But I swear I read feedback from someone saying even turning all the RGB off they still had power issues with a coiled cable. Maybe it's just the way it's designed it just draws more power constantly.

But if you have it working with the powered hub I guess that's one way of managing it.

  • -4

How do these things cost more than $5, even that is a push.

    • You make one and I’ll give you $10.

  • -1

So… Can I charge my phone with this?

    • +2

I explicitly wrote a warning in the post to NOT charge your phone or any other device with this cable.

Ignore what it says about fast charging on the Amazon page. You will risk overheating and melting your charger possibly causing a fire if left unattended and also damaging your smartphone. Not a good idea to risk damaging your few hundred dollar smartphone with a $30 cable which is not made for charging.

      • Doesnt usb c have safety implementations to ensure only the tprequired amount is taken? This is the main reason I use my usb c cables interchangeably with my various devices for convenience.

        • +1

No definitely not. I read up about this a few months ago, but USB-C just refers to the connector it does not refer to a standard of how cables are made.

These USB-C keyboard cables are internally all wired to USB2.0 standards. You can get USB-C cables wired to USB3.0 or 3.1 standards, but this does not mean these cables support fast charge capability.
I think it was from cables wired to USB3.2 standards and after that have the ability to support Fast charging or what it's more commonly known as USB-PD or Power Delivery.

Sorry I don't have the time to look up all the numbers now but there are major differences in how they are wired inside and how many pins are used on the the USB connectors on each end (the part hidden inside the plastic part of the connector where the wires are soldered). This means there are important differences in many cables which use USB-C connectors and they are definitely not all made equally.

I use this to charge my phone and it charge faster

  • can i use on my razer blackwidow V3 pro? it is 5V - 2.0A

    • +1

it will work, but i would make an upgrade first. upgrade your keyboard and throw away your razer, lol.

      • +1

It was for free so I can't complain ;)

        • +1

awesome, so you will actually make a profit and your next keyboard is going to be cheaper. build a custom one: Keychron Q and V series are fantastic.

      • "upgrade your keyboard and throw away your razer, lol."

Honestly I don't get this mentality. Not just for keyboards but all things.

If it still works perfectly fine why throw it away?? I mean you can buy another keyboard, but you can also hold onto your old one if it still works.
If you really need to get rid of it for whatever reason take it to vinnies/the salvos.

        • Don't worry, I'm not throwing away a complete fine keyboard that cost $300

          • @luizmarin: Haha good. Also wow it costs so much more than I thought.

            • @harshbdmmaster718: razer is extremely overpriced, i believe it. A lot of people get a razer as there first upgraded board made famous by gamers. Then custom mechanical keyboards came on the seen with unlimited customisability and realise how garbage razer really is for the price you pay. I fell victim to this too as I also owned several razer keyboards, mouse, headset, etc….

No i have several custom keyboards with almost all available layouts. :( I did it early on with group buys and the prices were super expensive. Now is a great time to get into it, lots of budget options that are very similar to the old premium boards.

    • "it is 5V - 2.0A"

That's pretty high consumption for a keyboard.

I just looked it up yeah that's a full size with RGB, personally I don't think it will work with the Gunmjo cable.
Also heard for whatever reason RGB on Razer keyboards can get extra bright. That might be the reason it requires 2A of current.

  • Like some of the mentioned comments, I also got my coiled cable from aliexpress for around USD10. Been using it for half a year now, no problem.
