Get a WDT tool. This only distributes the top third of your basket. You’ll thank me later. I own one and it sits in my drawer now.

    • Ezebesta WDT Tool Coffee Grounds… https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09T6568Z9 I just got this wdt tool, pretty good.

    • +1

      Use a skewer.

      • also paper clip

      • This, much cheaper and does exactly the same thing.

        • +2

I used to think this and used that or a paperclip for years. Then I 3D printed one that uses acupuncture needles and it works way, way better. Like they're both the same for just mixing stuff up and removing clumps, but very narrow needles work noticeably better for the final distribution.

    • +1

I agree. This more or less only useful as leveller, but the tamp often doesnt reach deep enough

    • Cant I just use a toothpick?

      • Better than nothing (or the thing for sale here) not as good as something with really narrow needles.

    • Hi everyone, I am curious to know if anyone has used any dosing cups for the Barista Express and if they can share their experience using them.

This discussion has got me thinking maybe I should get a WDT tool instead (I've been using a toothpick this whole time).

My thinking is that with a dosing cup you can shake the grinds enough so there is no need to use a WDT tool as the clumps will break by shaking.

      Thanks

      • +3

WDT isn't only, or even mainly, about breaking the clumps, it's also using it to distribute (that's the D in WDT!). Take a look at what James Hoffman is doing here https://youtu.be/xb3IxAr4RCo?t=1172 he breaks the clumps but when he's done everything is evenly distributed.

  • Poke the bean

  • Extract juice

Thanks OP, I’ve been eyeing this for awhile.

  • +3

Bought one last week, once you get the settings right it's a great little tool.

  • +1

had one for a while on my bambino and its amazing. Good to get more constant extractions.

    • Now it's time for a bean distribution tool!

  • +1

    Ordered one, thanks op

I've had a barista express for about 4 years and never had an issue with levelling or inconsistent pressure , and I just using the tamper that comes with the machine. For me something like this takes away from the appeal of a manual machine. It's a bit like buying a manual car and then asking a mechanic to install an automatic gearbox :)

I wonder how many negative votes I'll get for this?

    • I'd love one of those automatic espresso machines. I love driving automatics too; the computer in the car can change gears faster than I ever could, and I can't play Doodle Jump and drive if my left hand is on the gearstick.

    • -2

      Good insights. Negged for snark.

    • Do you have a naked portafilter? If you don't how do you know you don't have an issue with levelling and distribution?

  • +2

The "distributor" part is a bit questionable, but the "tamper" part is quite good.
Once it's set up, I got fairly consistent tamping.

I use separate wdt tool as well, prior to distribute and tamp with this tool.

  • can anyone recommend a good naked portafilter for the Breville 920?

    • +1

      Normcore Bottomless Portafilter - 58mm - Breville

Works a treat on my Breville 920

    • Breville sells their own, which I bought (a gift) for my partner's 920:

      https://www.breville.com/us/en/parts-accessories/accessories…

Works well. Keeps the machine's original aesthetic, if that's important to you (it was for my partner).

Could do with a better basket, but that's not the portafilter's fault, more just that naked portafilters in general make basket imperfections more obvious.

One small thing to note, with naked portafilters on the 920, the two holes on the drip tray will no longer longer line up with the espresso stream because the original portafilter redirects the flow back towards the handle by a centimetre or so. Not a big deal, just something to be aware of when placing your cup down :)

      • +1

$109 for the normcore and $79 for the breville- is one better than the other or much to the muchness? Are different filter baskets needed if switching to a bottomless filter?

        • +1

https://www.breville.com/au/en/parts-accessories/accessories… Breville one is $99, the above link was US store :)

        • They'll be 100% the same as far as the espresso out is concerned. What will matter is the basket.

It looks like the normcore comes with a basket (I don't recall if the Breville did). But if, for example, you use the 920's original basket with both, then you'll get exactly the same results. Likewise, if you upgraded either/both to use some fancy IMS "competition" basket, then likely both will be the same. If you intend to use the basked that comes with the normcore, then I guess it depends on the quality of that basket. Personally, I'd choose the two (portafilta and basket) independently, but that's just a personal thing :)

          Cheers.

great timing after the delongi deal

now i need a proper grinder

    • +1

      different size i believe..

      • damn you are right

thank you for saving me $26

  • +1

oh I need the 58mm one

  • +1

just got a breville barista express, I keep reading that this is one of the first items everyone should get.

    • +1

They were my first purchases as well for the Barista Express 🙂

The tamp/distributor tool helps with getting a consistent tamp and distributing the grinds.

Also buying a digital scale will save you a lot of guess work when it comes to weighing the beans, and the extracted shots.

I can't believe it's still not common knowledge that these tamps are just AliBaba items being flipped on Amazon.

1 example of hundreds of variants and sellers on Ali Express..
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32989931185.html

Chances are you'll save at least $10 off this 'deal' and still get the same thing.

    • +1

I got mine from aliexpress along with other things and quite happy with it :) The only reason to get this is fast delivery. But aliexpress takes 1 month on average if one can wait.

      • -1

The link to Aliexpress doesn't have this exact item anyway. I's just the distributer end which isn't the reason why you would buy the Matow.

Also Aliexpress deliveries vary. Recently for me it's been 2 weeks.

        • +1

Oh there are plenty double headed distributors/tampers if you search. But that wasnt me who posted the link.

    • -1

      The item you linked to on AliExpress;
      Summary
Total item costs - AU $15.81
      Total shipping - AU $3.40
      Tax - AU $1.92
      TotalAU $21.12

You'd save $5.22 and wait at least 4 weeks for it to turn up.

I'd rather pay the extra $5 - have it tomorrow and know if there's issues (unlikely) I can easily return for a full refund.

      • -1

        Let me remind you…

        1) linked one random example out of hundreds, that one random example was cheaper even though I wasn't price hunting.
        2) There are hundreds more id this specific example isn't ideal.
        3) Ali Express doesn't have these as a deal, these are normal price which is even better, you don't need to wait for an Amazon deal which could take months.
        4) Recent deliveries are as quick as 2 weeks.
        5) Regardless of it simply being a single and random example it's still cheaper, and that's the point of OZ Bargain.

If you're a pay more for convenience / have it now person then you shouldn't be on here waiting for it to become available at a slight discount.

Also if you want to save yourself a lot of headaches and mess get this https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/breville-the-dosing-funnel-be…

I got this the other day for a Barista pro and it really works well and has cut down mess so much.

    • I bought this last week. I was using my WDT without it and man does this make a difference. So much easier to get in there without any grounds spilling. After I’m done I use the matow in this deal to distribute and tamp it. The distribution is probably not needed but I do it anyway out of habit.

Picked my dosing funnel for $14 off binglee’s ebay using the eBay plus monthly coupon

  • +1

Btw for those who also recently purchased a new machine (like me). Based on previous posts and comments I ended up getting a digital scale to help measure the beans (18g) + the extracted coffee (36g) following this awesome YouTube video from Lifestyle Lab

I bought 3 scales off Amazon and returned 2 that were not accurate (I weighted same item multiple times and it kept showing different amounts) or didn’t react well to weight changes (ie as the coffee is expressing it took too long to calculate weight or it freaked out trying to measure a fluctuating value).

This is the one I have kept, it was $15.50 and it is very small but fits well, it’s accurate and it shows quick values so works well when expressing. Only fault I have is that it turns off quickly to save battery. I would like to extend the “on time” as I’m using my eneloop anyway so battery usage doesn’t bother me with my eneloop stash haha!

    Hopefully this helps someone.

    • Which other two that you returned?
