Is Tasmania Worth Visiting? - Taking 1 Week off Post Easter

So not working over Easter and going to try to get leave for an additional week. I'm in Adelaide and during Easter (Fri to Sun or Mon) will be visiting family at Mansfield. We are driving up in our new Ford Ranger. I'm trying to work out where to go afterwards. A lot of the Indonesian islands are a bit rainy so they're off. For flights we can leave the car at Mansfield and get a lift to Melbourne so no dramas there.

The alternate I was thinking was we could drive down and catch the Spirit of Tasmania and spend a week driving around Tasmania. The ferry return costs with car and room which we will get is like $1800 which is kind of ridiculous so it's not exactly cheap.

I have done 2 weeks drive in South Island NZ a few years ago in Feb and I'm just worried that Tasmania will be a bit underwhelming? This will be the longest trip we take in 2023 so I want to make sure it will be good.

Seriously though, has Tasmania got the wow factor or is it more just 'it's worth checking out'?

We have decided to go to Tassie x

  • not for one week

  • If you like reading, "The Potato Factory" by Bryce Courtenay is well worth a read before you go, just to get an idea of the history.

It's been said already, but MONA MONA MONA MONA MONA MONA.
    MONA MONA MONA MONA MONA!!!

    MONA

Honestly, it is that good. Frankly it's a destination - i.e. you're vising MONA and seeing the rest of Tasmania as a side trip.

    • Just for the contrarian view. MONA is very subjective. I know people who found it a total waste of time. I found it ok, but I wouldn't include it in a top 10 highlights list from a week and a bit in Tassie.

    • sorry but your taste is in your arts

  • Yes, it’s nicer than Australia:)

You will be disappointed. Mostly hype. You drive around your neighbourhood, and it will be not be much different from Tassie, other than that everything costs a lot more.

  • We did a lap of Australia last year and then went to Tassie at Easter this year. It was our least favourite place in Australia and we won’t go back . Most “attractions” wouldn’t be attractions in other places. The people didn’t make us feel welcome. The ferry home was probably the best part!

Tassie is a nice place to visit but if you've been to the NZ south island it might be underwhelming in comparison. I've been to Tassie once and South island twice and would go back to the south island again if I had to pick between the 2

We loved both to be fair. South Island is fantastic and the view we had from the place we rented in Queenstown was to die for.

  • I would go to Tassie first than NZ.

  • I like the twisty roads in Tasmania, gone back just for those.

  • Go and eat yourself silly in Hobart and make sure you visit Bruny island.

  • If you are driving up the east coast and like wineries - Check out Devil's Corner winery.

Best winery I've ever been to and nearby there are a few others as well.

  • Yes!
Would recommend a car to get around. Hire or bring your own.
The spirit of Tasmania is an experience, not to bad if you have company.

    Highly recommend Freycinet bay.

  • Yes I've just done 3 weeks and felt entertained the whole time there. We drove from Sydney and took the Spirit too. To hire a car for that length of time would have easily exceeded the cost of the Spirit. DM me if you want more information on anything specific.

    • 'felt entertained the whole time'

never took your hand off it then ?

  • Tassie is the bees knees. Second only to New Zealand. Both of which are much superior to mainland Aus.

  • YES mate only did it once but it tas worth it.

We went for a 5D/4N trip during Easter in 2021 - absolutely loved it. Flew to Hobart in the morning, got in the pre-rented car, drove through The Great Eastern Drive towards Launceston while visiting many places including Wineglass Bay trail. Next day went to Dove Lake (Cradle Mountains) which will take a whole day to cover even if it's just about 1.5-2hr drive away. Next day went hiking in Ben Lomond trail which was the best hike we have had to date. Came back to Hobart on the same day through the main Hwy and explored there for the next couple of days although unlike around Launceston I only recall the whiskey tasting we had at Sullivans Cove distillery lol.
Take note even Tuesday after Easter is a holiday in Tassie so parking was free. Not sure if this has changed though.
Weather was really nice not too cold nor warm. Light jackets were all we needed, except at Dove Lake (Cradle Mountains National Park) which is at a higher altitude making the temperature to drop by more than 10-12 degrees! Was so cold up there we had to buy gloves!
Tip: buy a parks pass for the vehicle which is valid at every park except at Cradle Mountains. Your cost of covered if you intend to visit at least two parks the pass is valid for.

PS: going back this Xmas holidays with a bunch of friends in Spirit of Tassie. Haven't been to NZ yet but I have heard Tassie can't match what NZ has to offer - so I'd lower my expectations a bit to avoid disappointment.

  • You should definately go. I've been to Tassie three times (I'm from Sydney) and would love to go again!
Just fly in, book accommodation and do day tours.
You can hire a car and drive all over as well.
Tassie has great food. Everything is fresh and the quality is high.
