  • Can anyone recommend if this deal is good for a couple travelling with a 4 month old baby?

    • +12

I travelled with a 4-month-old baby, I do not recommend it in any way shape or form.

      • Duly noted lol. Missus itching to go on a holiday overseas… Might need to hold off a little longer til the little one gets a bit older.

Ours is 5 now and it's finally simple and fun rather than traumatic haha. In saying that, that is just our experience. Maybe for some its simple and amazing!

@MrFizz: No, other people's kids maybe, but never your own

        • +2

it's not a holiday. you're just parenting in another country.

        • +1

Took our 4 mo son overseas for 2 months, including a 14 hr flight each way. He’s flown more than most adults this year as we also have family in SA. Seriously, if you plan it it’s no big deal.

          • @truemana: Highly subjective to the kid. I'd say its the exception to the norm.

@Xizor: sorta. Kids reflect the stress that their parents exhibit. We’ve got a good little one for sure, but I also think that a lot of parents create stressful situations by either setting impossible expectations or trying to project manage their kids.

For example, one friend of ours hates his kid getting messy. So he spends a load of time trying to prevent them from getting dirty while eating or playing. Constantly cleaning them.

Another friend had a laminated daily activities and sleep schedule for their kid at 6 weeks old.

Our brother in law and his wife do parenting in hard mode. Tend to the kid the second they cry, won’t use any helpful things like carriers or food devices (eg subo). Everything is trying to have a family today using things from 30 years ago.

Now imagine those people trying to go on a holiday and control everything every day. Of course it won’t feel like a holiday.

For the sake of everyone else, best to stay at home….

They're worse after about 6mths (or when they're mobile).

But find yourself somewhere nice in Australia, and the money saved on flights, passports, etc she missus can spend on pampering herself.

Not sure where you are, but find a nice quietish beach area (Coffs Harbour, Yamba, Kingscliff, Coolangatta, Caloundra, Airlie beach, Mission Beach, Port Douglas or even Freo), somewhere close to the beach (little kids love sand & splashing in the water), there's usually sheltered playgrounds on the foreshore.

Let mum sleep in, you take the youngster for a walk in the morning when they wake up for an hour or two. Play at the beach, the park, etc. Bring her back a coffee & breakfast. In the evening go for a family walk along the foreshore.

      • I'm thinking this is the way to go. Leading up to the birth of our bub, we did heaps of these types of 'getaways' and weekend trips by the beach, just between the two of us. I think she wanted to go overseas this time to experience other cultures etc. I don't think a few more beach-related/relaxing getaways is a bad idea.

  • Dont recommend taking the kids on a island off mainland fiji too many mozzies fort he poor baby to be eaten alive lol

5k+ to take the family for 5nights… Fiji doesnt seem like a great option.

with flights and all meals and resort stay? not sure how you calculate your value

      • So back to resort for every meal… no thanks.

Considering flights have been ~$500 return lately i'm not seeing value for an extra 3k for 5 nights accommodation and meals…

        • Especially when kids "stay free"

        • Fiji is not cheap holiday destination unless you stay near Nadi… which half defeats the point. And a lot of the better islands/resorts have very limited options outside the resort to eat.
