Bosch 5-Piece 18V Power Tool Kit (2.5Ah + 1.5Ah battery + Charger) $185.60 (was $232) + Delivery ($0 with OnePass) @ Catch

770

Important things to note!
- These are NOT brushless
- You probably won't impress your mates with these
- They're not designed for professional use, these are Bosch Green not Bosch Blue (Hint: Look at their colour)
- Delivery is extra, for me approx $10

Some good things to note:
- The value is exceptional, especially with 2 batteries (the 2.5Ah alone without charger best price I saw was $89). Even at $232 it's great value.
- Should be a great starter set with the impact driver and drill alone. The circ saw is handy especially if you have some extra digits you're not fond of and the sander with give that deep tissue massage you've been dying for.
- Torch will light up your life
- Has 3 year warranty if you register with Bosch (otherwise 2 years)

Now here's their blurb:

  • $232 already sounds crazy cheap for a 5pc kit. Are these things just junk?

    • +3

I have had a Bosch 18v drill for quite a while now, definitely not junk but I only use it occassionally. Agree that $232 is crazy cheap, if you were to price these up individually you would be $450+

You'll find reviews for the individual tools on youtube.

I was looking to get some new batteries as I have a whipper snipper, blower and the aforementioned drill with two 1.3 Ah batteries that don't last that long with the whipper snipper in particular.

This is cheap, yes they aren't the best but they are plenty good for the irregular (not professional) user.

Brushless isn't better, there are pros and cons to brushless motors, most non professionals would barely have ever had to replace brushes in a good quality tool and professionals shouldn't complain about maintenance that requires a couple go dollars and a couple of minutes to do.

I've got a blender at home I've used daily for years and recently checked the brushes out of curiosity, they look like they have another 5-10 years in them, if they require replacing, the armature would likely not last much longer and assuming other parts will break before the brushes are worn.

So don't get all hung up on brushless motors being a significant point of difference.

Well that's my dad's bday sorted.
FYI - Delivery to Adelaide ~$13

How are this green Bosch compared to Ozito, Ryobi?
    Thanks

    • +2

I can't comment on the quality per se, but I have the Ozito tools and I love them.
If I were considering this set, I'd wonder what other tools I'd want down the track. It may be harder to find the green bosch tools than just walking into bunnings.

      • +2

        This is totally valid.

Amazon do stock a whole range of the Bosch green and they frequently have discounts on them also (none as good as this IMO!). So if you were interested in further buy in to the Bosch green ecosystem it's quite accessible. As I mentioned above I have a whipper snipper, drill and blower - they were all purchased on special through Amazon.

        • +1

Further detail on the previous items I bought through Amazon
          - Drill PSR 18 LI (with charger and 2 x 1.3Ah batteries) $83 (2019)
          - Grass Trimmer (aka whipper snipper) Easy Cut 18 Skin only $95 (2020)
          - Garden Blower ALB 18 LI skin only $64 (2022)

Now add this in @$195 delivered and that's 8 tools (granted there is a double up on a drill - different model) 4 batteries (2.5Ah, 1.5Ah, 2 x 1.3Ah) and two chargers for $437. Not too shabby!

I've used the whipper snipper dozens of times (it's not the strongest but it's quiet and effectove on the type of grass I have - biggest complaint is that it doesn't last that long on 1.3Ah batteries). Comparing it to a Makita 18v the Makita is much better but at more than twice the price the Bosch is better value. The garden blower is not that strong have only used it a couple of times, but it has been effective. I'd imagine if the leaf litter was wet it wouldn't be as effective. The drill I've used at least half a dozen times all for small jobs. It wasn't able to remove some deep screws from hardwood, but that's a job for an impact driver and now I have one of them :)

    • +1

Better. Prob the top end of the cheaper entry level market.

If I was choosing, I'd go Ryobi or ozito purely because of the range and constant good deals I see here.

    • +3

I have an old (pre PXC) ozito drill and impact driver. Last week I helped build something with a friends Bosch green drill and impact driver. My personal experience was that the Bosch Green was fine, but it was bigger and heavier than the ozito I am used to, and the impact driver didn't feel like it had more power it actually felt like it had a bit less. That's my personal feeling about it anyway. Personally for you avg Joe just get an ozito, more convenient

Ozito stuff is fine for anyone, heaps of trades even use them because they are never more than 2km from a bunnings if they need it replaced.

      • Ozito stuff is fine for anyone, heaps of trades even use them because they are never more than 2km from a bunnings

Yeah the tradies I know use them because then they don't have to worry as much if they break or get stolen, just go buy a new one from Bunnings and keep going

    • +1

I have different tools from all three.

Probably equivalent to Ryobi (Ozito is shit tier but the occasional tool is quite decent)

This deal is amazing for someone someone after a cheap gear set for occasional use, and its a good selection of common tools a home handyman would use.

  • As a home gamer, I have the green drill (older shape, same battery tech) and I still use it regularly.

3 years ago, I used it to build some stud walls (pre drill and drive screws). On one drive it started to let the smoke out, I thought it was done for. But still going strong 3 years later.

I have since upgraded to Bosch blue brushless kit, but i still reach for this one for driving in, or removing, all smaller screws. It's very light and manoeuvrable, and the torque adjustment clutch is useful.

My blue one is very powerful, but also very heavy, so for driving screws, where the clutch is required, and you don't want to over tighten, you lose some feel with how heavy it is.

Only downside is mine only has a single speed, and is geared more towards driving than drilling. So drilling takes a bit longer.

    • +1

I probably have the same single speed drill (PSR 18 LI). The one in this 5 piece kit is a new two speed model - Universal Drill 18. The new model is lighter and more compact (shorter) and doesnt have the integrated light. Weight wise it feels great in the hand. The old one is made in China, new one Malaysia.

Any indication whether this is a random orbital sander?

Also, does anyone know whether the plate on the circular saw is steel or aluminium?

    • +1

Yes it's a random orbital sander. Advance Orbit 18 as seen here: Bosch 18 V Cordless 125mm Random Orbital Sander Polisher, Variable Speed, Includes Sandpaper Sheet and Paper Assistant, Without Battery (Advanced Orbit 18) https://amzn.asia/d/9124V4e

Each of the components are individually boxed inside the larger box except the drill with the 1.5 Ah battery, the charger and a drill bit. This is the circ saw which is apparently brushless.

Have the drill and driver since 2017? Used it alot and been thru one reno with it. The driver was handy and worked fine even screwing screws into hardwood. The drill was had abit of an issue when I was doing alot of drilling during reno but no issue after I took it abit easy the following day. :)

  • +3

I have a mix of green and blue and Ryobi.

Green is generally better than Ryobi.

Blue blows them both away, like using pro tools plugged into 240v.

    This is an awesome deal.

  • +2

Personally I’d pick Ozito & Ryobi over Bosch Green products. Same price range and better value. Otherwise go Bosch Blue / Milwaukee / DeWalt / Makita.

    • +2

Bosch green are, or used to be way better than Ozito & Ryobi

    • Any reason over Bosch green?

Legend! Got it for $153.68 delivered stacking student beans code, onepass trial and discounted gift card :)

    • Damn, saw this too late and missed the discounted gift cards, $167.04 for me.

  • The circ saw is handy especially if you have some extra digits you're not fond of

Sweet, I can finally channel my inner Tony Iommi!

  • +1

Today I learned Ozito has fans

    • +1

You become a fan of most things you buy to justify your purchase.

  • Was thinking of buying this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/730147

But the value here is insane

  • Nothing wrong with Bosch green for occasional or even light trade use ,
definitely better than ryobi junk .
    Buy now regret later !

PS. the battery will be a limiting factor for the more thisty tools like the circular saw and impact driver.
Probably equivalent to ryobi but with some longevity of tools .

  • My favorite drill is my Bosch green, its light and small and quite tough, not as much power as the dewalt but you dont need it.

    • +1

Mind you my Bosch green has a hammer function….

  • Would love to have a studentbean code…

  • +3

Drills and sander are great for the average homeowner, presume light would be good too - but the circular saw is junk… runs out of grunt on anything thicker than balsa wood. Always better with a cheap corded Ozito for the strenuous stuff in my experience.

  • If I didn't have a whole heap of ryobi tools, I would totally buy this on your description alone

  • +1

Shame Bosch Blue and Green batteries aren’t interchangeable
