Help with Finding a Hit and Run - Side Swiped My Car

My wife’s car was side swiped by a hit and run driver.

Got the entire incident on CCTV but cannot identify the Rego in the footage.

It was a Black Holden Cruze with mags.

I walked the local streets to try and find the car without success. I think it is a local resident.

Police and my insurance company not interested in tracking down the culprit – My insurance is more concerned about me paying the excess $900.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do next to find the offending car/driver?

  • Are you missing a bolt after the incident?

    • OP has exhausted all avenues
      other than….
      Claim on insurance

  • Police and my insurance company not interested in tracking down the culprit

How would they track it down?

Exactly like on tv. TV never lies.

I walked the local streets to try and find the car without success. I think it is a local resident.

How did you make that connection?
What do you intend to do if you locate the other car?

    • +2

How did you make that connection? It was an assumption as our street ends in a deadend.

What do you intend to do if you locate the other car? Give the rego to the Police.

It was an assumption as our street ends in a deadend.

So only people who live at deadends can drive down there? They could have been using it to turn around since, you know, it is a road.

Give the rego to the Police.

Even if the damage is severe enough to line up with the damage done to yours, and there was paint transfer, this still isn't enough for anything beyond a reasonable doubt, you're SOOL.

Pay the excess and move on.

Got the entire incident on CCTV but cannot identify the Rego in the footage.

Get a better CCTV. What's the point if it can't identify anything meaningful?

    • Are you suggesting there's no point in having CCTV cameras at home unless owners dig a trench to the front of their property so they can mount a camera on a tall pole facing oncoming traffic to capture number plates?

      • That's actually a good idea.

        • Yup, otherwise there's no point in having CCTV at home. At least according to some people. :)

Get the cops to record the incident and give you a reference number. This is just to ensure the incident adds to the statistics.
Not much you can do with insurance except to pay the excess.

    Pay excess.

Even if you find a similar looking car with damage…. How to prove its the one that did your damage?

    • +2

Op: it’s the uh vibe of it, your honor

    • I mean, they have the make, model, and colour of the car (With a non-factory extra), if they find OP's car's paint on the Cruze who can confirmably be in that street in that time (Like, they live there, or around the corner) then it's a pretty hard denial, right?

Although presumably there would still be some burden of proof, I guess.

      • "there would still be some burden of proof,"

er…yeh…just a LOT - like 'beyond a reasonable doubt' level

    File a police report,
    Give them the cctv footage.
    Get a claim number.

Pay excess and hope that the police may find something similar if the damage to their car is significant then claim.

Yes insurance is not free Afterall,

Just find a few quote on repairs, If your repair is actually worth $900. To be honest if your repair is like $1000 or more only then it makes sense to pay to pay the insurance company excess.
The hassle of insurance company dealing with all this is insane. Afterall insurance ONLY CARES IN SUCKING YOUR MONEY.
If your repairs are less then $1000, you may be better of just getting it repaired on yourself, and not have to deal with insurance headaches, and there increased premiums etc.

Police dont really give a crap, surely one day Police will realise the impact on their nonaction on PUBLIC CONFIDENCE IN POLICE

You will also need to factor in that your premium will go up the following year(s).

  • edit: i made boo boo

    • You can report your comment to get it removed if you want to

      • usually other people do that for me!!! cheers m8 lol :D

Post the video - an OzB sleuth may be able to decipher parts of the numberplate and then throw in similar combos into the rego status check website to see if it matches the make and model of the car you're looking for.

    • Yes post the video!

    • Surely, someone here can enhance the video!

    • How do you add video?

      • You have to post it somewhere like Youtube and then link it here. Or put the file in your google drive and share the public link here.

Does the cc tv have footage of the car coming and going that day?
Is it possible it was an Uber or food delivery? Could check with your neighbours

  • +1

but cannot identify the Rego in the footage.

    Then you're out of luck.

  • +1

Check if any of your neighbours have CCTV or dash cams, possibly walk the path you think the car went after exiting your street for a block or so if you don't have any luck on your street.
Since you know what the car looks like, as well as the time and date, you may get lucky .

possibly walk the path you think the car went after exiting your street for a block or so

Unless the wife's car is now undriveable why not use it to, you know, drive around a couple of blocks?
Maybe even at a couple of different times of day to have more chance of locating it if it is local.

      • +1

Could do, but I was referring to how far they could go to find a camera that may have picked up the offending car.
I was just thinking after a block or so there would be more directions the offending car could have gone so getting harder to find a CCTV or dashcam that may have picked it up.

Then again you gave me an idea, maybe print off the picture of the car and post it around the neighbourhood to see if any one knows of it, or post it to any social media pages used by locals.

Great Idea! I posted a picture of offending car on the Local Facebook Community page and got a bite. More info. to come soon…
