  • and as usual SCA never price beats online, thus Autobarn takes the lead

    • You can call to price beat. They give a coupon to obtain the match online.

      • tried calling their 1300 number number of times, not a single time they said they can price beat it. You probably got an insider dude issuing coupons I reckon?

  • Great price for a highly underrated motor oil

  • Trying to figure out if I can use this in a VW Mk7 1.4TSI 92kw? Great price - as the Nulon or Castrol stuff for this spec is as dear as poison.

    • +1

You should be able to, but note it's slightly thicker than the normal oil VW use in Australia (5w30).

Personally, I'll stick with 5w30 unless you're burning oil.

      • But perfect for a summer oil.

If you're burning oil then you want a 10Wxx

        • +6

It's the other way round.. 5W30 and 5W40 behave the same when cold.

5W40 is thicker when hot, so less likely to burn.

10Wxx won't lubricate as well when cold, so definitely a no-no.

          • +1

@JimB: Short version: Motor oil gets thinner as it’s heated, but to prevent it from getting too thin at higher temperatures, additives (viscosity modifiers) are used so that it behaves like a thicker grade oil at higher temps.

            • @Levene: When I said 5w40 is thicker, I should have said thicker than 5w30 when hot.

Trying to figure out if I can use this in a VW Mk7 1.4TSI 92kw?

      It will be fine

    • +1

Volkswagen specify VW 502 00 for your car, so you'll be fine using this oil, or if you are on a long life scheme it is VW 504 00
Gulf Western SYN-X 5000 5W-40 meets Volkswagen 502.00/505.00 specifications so you can safely use it in your car with no issues.
VW 504 00 specification oils typically SAE 0w30 and SAE 5w30 slightly increase fuel economy and are used for longer oil change intervals (they are very thin oils). 5W-40 will protect the engine better and as the engine ages keep valve train noise down.
VW 505 is typically recommended by VW for their diesel engines.
Originally Volkswagen made up these specifications to make you worry and get you to service your car at the dealer but now many oils brands show these specs on the bottle.. More importantly the API: SN/CF and ACEA: A3/B4 specifications of this oil far exceed the Volkswagen's requirements for oil anyway.

      • if you are on a long life scheme it is VW 504 00

Its actually called Variable Service Regime which is up to 30k km/2yrs. It isn't used in AU.

The advantage of 504.00 is that it is low SAPs which helps a bit with intake carbon.

  • How does this compare to Penrite HPR5 5w40?

    • +1

price wise excellent you can buy like 3 bottles of this vs 1 bottle Penrite full price

performance wise negligible if you are already using 5w-40 full synthetic

    • Very similar, but bear in mind HPR5 is JASO MA certified for use in motorcycles with wet clutches, the gulf western is not, if that matters.

  • no CnC?

  • Got a x6m which is 4.4 twin turbo, can anyone recommend using this oil? Thanks in advance

    • +4

You have a N63 which is likely to implode at the best of time.

Don’t cheapen out on oil. Get the BMW M oil.

Likewise, don’t buy the cheapest 21inch Tyres like most 2nd and 3rd owners.

    • +2

Out of warranty S63's can run any quality 5W-30 or 5W-40 full synthetic, change every 7.5K KM's

If you are under warranty, use the BMW M (Castrol) oil

  • is there a way to check stock? mine's all greyed out

    • Think you would need to call your local store

    • All stores are currently showing stock …

      Just a reminder it's a limit of 2 per customer…

      • Your web team has pulled the product page for some reason

        • The system likes to turn itself off coz click and collect and delivery is turned off…
Manual process to turn it back on.

We just gotta keep an eye on it and fix when it does turn off :(

Just thought i'd share what all the numbers mean if anyone was interested:

SN/CF: This is the American Petroleum Institue ratings (API). SN is the catergory for gasoline engines, designed for 2020 and older engines. SP is the most current category. CF is the diesel category, not suitable for diesel engines made after 2009. CK-4 is the most current category for diesel.

ACEA A3/B3/B4: This is the European equivalent of API. A3/B3/B4 is intended for high performance petrol and diesel engines, and can be used on some diesel direct injection.

MB-Approval 229.5: This is a Mercedes Benz specific approval rating for oil. Think how motherboard manufacturers will state what ram will work with their specfic motherboard. Similar thing.

RN 700/710: This is a Renault specific rating. RN 0720 is the latest rating, which is designed for the latest generation diesels, RN 700/710 is most current for petrol engines.

VW 502/505: This is a Volkswagen specific rating. I had to double check this, but this is not the latest ratings for VW oil. They go up to 504 for petrol and 507/508/509 for diesels. Essentially VW have some long service intervals (30,000km) and some high performance engines (V10 and R5 engines) that they like to give their own catergory.

PSA B71 2300: Yep you guessed it, Peugot has their own as well. Once again I had to check, but this rating matches A3/B4. B71 2313 is their latest rating, but just like VW, it is mostly used for their BlueHDi diesel engines which are pretty complicated to meet euro certification.

TL:DR: This is a decent synthetic oil, certainly up to all the important modern standards. Unless you have a 2016 plus diesel, or a V10, just double check the viscosity for your engine, and buy away.

Source: Mechanical engineer in another life.

      Legendary

    • You forgot the ACEA A1/B1, A2/B2 standards

      • A1/B1 was removed back in 2016 and is now obselete, A2/B2 was made obselete back in 2001 (i think, long time ago). Neither are listed on the product so they were ignored.

There is literally 1000's of oil standards just for cars I could copy and paste, but the point is kinda to show people that most modern oils sold in shops meet all but the most stringent of quality testing, so try not to get tricked cause the SN oil is $20, but the SP oil is $120 and think it is infinitely better.

I just bought an A2/B2 oil like last year for $6 from Repco. They still in circulation just very hard to find.

    • I've got a Peugeot 208 GTI (2015). When I enter this into SuperCheap for this oil (and just about every other type) it advises "not suitable".

I've checked my 352 page manual and there is nothing as to the requirements. To date I've been using the Synthetic from Costco without issue.

My son is now getting the 2014 version of the 208 GTI from a mate and he's advised it uses a little oil so thinking this oil would be more suitable. In my car I've only used 5W-30 but it also uses no oil.

      • You can only use (very) low SAPS oil in the Pug EP6 engines - Penrite C3 is a good option, and you can find 10L for $100 fairly regularly.

If you don't do this, your carbon build-up will happen more quickly and then you'll get a $1500 bill for an intake de-carbon… You probably want to delay this as long as possible !

        • Thanks mate
