  • Anyone knows what the colour of its LED display is? Is it like the blue colour on the silver model?

  • RDY4ME, you got a Costco membership?

  • +3

    Uncle Roger approves FUIYO

    • +8

      HAIYA, not enough discount

  • Was expecting more from Costco…

    • While I was hoping for lower, it is the cheapest price I've seen so far.

    • Same if it was more discounted would definitely have tried it… nothing wrong with the rice coming out of the current one, just not worth to see what is the fuss about.

  • +1

Has anyone noticed their rice coming out slightly grey?

    • no, mine seems fine

    • No… is it your water/ taps?
Also did you wash your rice beforehand?

      • +2

It's better to wash the rice in another bowl/container first.

Washing the rice in the bowls of these expensive rice cookers,
can end up damaging the coating of the bowl itself, and getting replacement bowl is not cheap!

      • +3

Doubt it's the taps since it was fine with the old rice cooker. My ancestors would curse me from the grave if I didn't wash the rice

        • +5

Not sure if this is true as I couldn't validate it - but saw this on an Amazon comment:

All rice cooked with pressure over 70kpa (10psi) appears to be a little grey. This has nothing to do with stainless steel or teflon cooking pot, or bleaching impurities from the pot. Under high powered microscope, the cooked rice has pin holes which make them appears a little grey.

    • the older the rice, the greyer it seems to become.

      • Maybe. We are running towards the later end of the bag.

    • Yes! I have no idea why. My wife doesn't notice it though.

      • I found one review on Amazon that said it might've something to do with the pressure cooking method

        • -1

Is it possible that the carbs in the rice caramelise a bit?

    • Yep. Returned it because it did this and all the other brands I’ve had didn’t. Was a terrible customer service experience (didn’t buy from Costco). They said something about the pressure or what not and blamed me for not cleaning it (it was new)

  • What time of day do these deals drop? it’s not at midnight.

    • +1

Shall be around 8am to 8:15am. Adelaide time.

  • +5

Got this for $469 in the last deal to replace a Tiger. Worth it for great rice - plus faster.

But annoying bit is the maintenance given its a pressure cooker - water tray and a bunch of other parts need to be removed washed at least fortnightly. Plus there is a seal around the lid that Cuckoo says needs to be replaced every 2 years.

  • +6

    Thought it's a radio clock.

  • This can make up to 10 cups.

Whilst this is good for restaurants or very large families, is it just as good pumping out 1 cup?

    • +1

Minimum is 2. We always cook a little bit more than we need and freeze the extra rice.

  • +1

Since this is a pressure cooker, how does the quality of rice compare to instant pot? The texture of rice does seem to differ between the instant pot and the pressurised rice cookers.

    • Personally, I think it's superior. Not sure if it relates to the pressure or the induction, but it's consistently cooked and fluffy and hot.

We eat a lot of rice and think this was worth every penny.

    • Always wondered that. Since I started using the instant pot to cook rice I've abandoned all other methods as really like it.

And so quick.I use a method I found on the web. Better than the rice setting. Full pressure, 3 minutes, natural steam release. Equal rice/water mix.

      • How do you go about it sticking to the stainless steel pot though?

  • +2

Once u go cuckoo u wont go back… unless it breaks down…

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

  • Does this make a sound when it’s done? I previously bought a rice cooker for my mom and This was the only reason why she didn’t use it.

    • It's pretty noisy. I don't know exactly what it is saying but it doesn't just beep when it's done. There is also the cuckoo sound as well.

Maybe you can turn it off? We haven't tried.

    • It chimes when complete and white led. Super fluffy rice when done cooking though I must add

  • There's another 10 x cup Cuckoo pressure rice cooker, which is cheaper :

      That one isn't induction heating

      • +1

        I completely missed that.

        Good pick-up !

      • what's the benefit of induction heating for a ricer cooker?

        • +1

It's supposed to be more even cooking, but I can't say for sure the effectiveness of it.

  • +1

Is there a 6 cup version? 10 is too much for us

  • +1

I've got the same unit, paid $200 more. So this price is great.
Beware my Battery had failed for clock after 17 months. Only 12 month warranty from cuckoo. Battery is solidered to board. Still works just need to set clock each time it's turned off. Costs $75 to fix at cuckoo and won't guarantee new battery time. Tiger battery lasted 8 years.

    • +1

If someone can inbox me receipt that's within 12 months I'll forever be in your ozbargain debt!!

      • If you bought from costco, they have warrantieid things beyond manufacturers warranty.

      • wouldn't they match serial numbers, with invoices ?

    • Can you use the cooker without setting the clock or it wont let you use the cooking function without first setting up the time, that looks like a pain to do everytime

      • You need to set clock with working battery its set and forget. Battery is spot welded so beyond my skill set to replace

        • Yeah, I mean do you need the clock set to use the rice cooker?

          • +1

@mahasona: Yes otherwise can't access functions.
Can hit enter it will display 12:00 as clock
Once its set will continue from the 12:00

        • I keep my cuckoo rice cooker in standby mode - that won't reset the time right if the battery dies?

          • @RADICALIST: I'm guessing the battery is a backup for when the device is unplugged - OP probably plugs it in whenever using, and the battery has probably died from cycling too many times (assuming it's rechargeable).

So yeah, if you leave it plugged in, you should be fine.

            • +1

@caprimulgus: Mine was pretty much plugged in 80% of the time. Seems to hold power save ok now with a dead battery and retaining the time. It used to cycle between power save and set function in a loop with a dead battery so I'd have to unplug it so it wouldn't repeat. Cuckoo support (au phone number) said it's common fault. Costco are great with warranty, you could push them for refund with no issues. Unfortunately got mine at Hello World.

Great unit. Chicken coongee via porridge mode is amazing. Just not enough for my family.

              • @SoTightEcoLPI: Oh wow, that sucks!

Yeah hopefully CostCo sort of the warranty! Thanks for the heads up!

    • First I've heard of this. Hopefully ours lasts a lot longer.

can anyone recommend a semi decent rice cooker for smaller amounts? Like 1 cup at a time?

    • +2

what about the xiaomi rice cookers? I haven't used them before but seems pretty good.

      • +1

        thanks, will have a look

edit….gonna grab this one for Xiaomi Rice Cooker 1.6L look small and simple and can be found for $70

    • +1

I second this request. Looking to treat the Mrs to one for Christmas, and upgrade from out $10 Kmart one. She works hard, so she definitely deserves it.

      • same as above, the xiaomi one looks decent

How about a Tatung Rice Cooker? It was invented in Taiwan in the 1960s and became so popular that virtually every household in Taiwan has one of those. They are made the "old fashioned" way and are reliable, usually lasting decades before needing replacement.

This particular model is the 6-cups version which means the maximum capacity is 6 cups of rice. The minimum capacity is 1-cup of rice and I used it to cook only 1-cup occasionally.

Ejoy is a physical Asian electronics store located in Sunnybank, Brisbane and I (since I am a local) walked past it occasionally.

      https://www.ejoy.com.au/products/tatung-tac-6gs-r-6-cup-rice…

      • +1

thanks, looks good. Think I'm gonna go for the Xiaomi Rice Cooker 1.6L. Really compact and can get it for $80 off of ebay. I'm after something because I am living remotely so is a back up to our bigger one at home. This looks great tho

      • We have a Tatung, red ten cup, that we brought back from Taiwan. MIssus uses it for cooking soups mainly or steaming various dishes. The rice that comes out of it doesn't get close to the quality of the cook we get from either of our two tigers, particularly the IH Tiger in 'Ultra' mode.

    • +1

I have used xiaomi rice cooker for over 3 years for rice, porridge etc. Consistently good

  • -3

Why should I buy this over Kmart $14 rice cooker?

    • +5

If you’re happy with the rice produced by a $14 rice cooker then don’t bother I guess. This is for those that care deeply about rice. Why should I buy a $5000 coffee machine over instant?

    • +2

It produces much better rice and the rice improves the quality of the meal significantly.

I have the Zojirushui with induction and fuzzy logic and I got it new for $550. I also have used Panasonic one with only fuzzy logic and it cost me 25 bucks. It costs $130 for a new one.

I'll be honest, the rice from Zojirushui is not significantly better than the Panasonic one.

My own theory is that the fuzzy logic itself produces high quality rice and personally, it's already better than the rice at your average Asian restaurants. A vacuumed rice cooker with fuzzy logic is more than enough to improve the quality of your rice and you could get used rice cooker with fuzzy logic easily on Facebook market.

Though the Zojirushi rice cooker is supposed to be of high quality and could last for years.

Why should I buy this over Kmart $14 rice cooker?

      never understand downvotes!
you ask a simple question looking for a simple answer. we can't be experts on everything

      • +1

people are mad because it gets asked every time an expensive rice cooker gets posted

        • +2

I get what you mean but I don't think this was an attack at expensive cookers. I have often considered this and asked friends who cook a lot of ricer for similar reasons.

Maybe this person hasn't read other posts

  • Would this also make pasta or one pot dishes ?

  • Just ordered one. Have been waiting for one to go on sale for ages.

  • what deals were on the previous two days?

  • So with this price just go with the Tiger right?

  • I went from a 10 year old tiger to this model and it is a big step up. Be aware there is not many cook menu recipes online for the chss1009fn so you are on your own. A lot of the cuckoo youtube channel is for slow cook function which this model does not have.

I use for rice and congee chicken. Also some gaba (brown rice), solid unit!

  • +2

I bought this for $469 during the last ebay deal and ended up reselling it. Wife wasn't too impressed by it.

    • It takes longer to cook 2 cups of rice than our Tefal 3-in-1. About 30 mins.
    • We were cooking jasmine rice and it came out a mushy mess. Tried using less water, nutritious rice setting, nothing fixed it. Didn't try basmati rice though.
    • Maybe not suitable for south asian household style cooking. Perhaps it would suit better for east asian / south east asian cooking.
    • It gets loud when cooking, seems like it releases pressure during the process.
    • Heavy and bulky. We tend to move the cooker in and out of the pantry as needed so this was a detriment.
    • Not much support online. Couldn't find many guides or opinions on how to use the cooker for the result we wanted.

Replaced with this one, much better: https://www.pbtech.com/au/product/COOPAN1011/Panasonic-CN-18…

Moral of the story is, don't always believe the ozbargain hype :)

  • some good rice recommendations would be great. Rice other than basmati is becoming increasinlgy difficult to find. I was at costco the other day and they only had basmati. I would love to try some high end rice brands.

    • +1

Do you like Thai jasmine rice?

Both Royal Umbrella Jasmine Rice, and Golden Wheel Thai Hom Mali Rice are great, cooks it in 1:1 ratio, I mean rice to water.

      • Hi may I ask if the jasmine rice come out fluffy or mushy? Thank you

        • Fluffy, if cooks by 1 part of water to 1 part of rice.

  • Received yesterday. Is it supposed to have a steam plate? It is in the manual instructions but not in the box I received.

    • +1

It's suppose to. Mine was in the pot itself.
