Deliveroo is no more - who is next?

Deliveroo looks to be no more which is a shame as it was my go to option with the mastercard plus deal.

I've been much happier with them over UE and Menulog etc.

Who will be the next one to fall?

  • Merged from All hail the demise of Deliveroo - now bring on the end of delivery culture

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, all hail the end of this overpriced service filled with fees that only serve an overhead that adds nothing to consumer interests.

Hopefully more will fall soon and it will address the blatant price gouging that us OzBargainers will always rally against.

    • I hope they stick around so we have the system in place when robot cars can do the deliveries. Restaurants that only sell on Uber Eats, yeah they pay 30% more, but they save on not having to rent a dining room in a prime location, they don't need to hire wait staff, they don't need to wash dishes, they save on a bunch of overheads. The system now doesn't work, even Uber Eats is hardly making money, but soon we will want the system in place when the biggest overhead of all, the human driver, is removed from the equation.

    • Some people rely on making deliveries as their livelihood. So they will be hurt the most by the fall out.

I personally prefer to go out for my meals or takeaway in store to ensure the restaurants are directly benefiting from my business. But i understand some people cant, so if all delivery companies fail, there are less options in the market. And less options is a bad thing.

"some people rely on x for a living" is not a valid argument, particularly if it's a company that hasn't even existed for a decade. Plenty of jobs out there in the 'covid-normal' world, particularly in hospitality which they are somewhat trained in.

You cant deny the fact that it did create a whole new employment opportunity segment. There are people who have bad knees cant stand all day in typical hospitality jobs. So they prefer making deliveries using their cars. Some people because of family reasons need certain flexibility and delivering food gives them the opportunity to work at certain times of the day. It did transform the hospitality industry.

Who are you to say that this service adds nothing to consumer interests? If you don't use the service, you don't have to. The fact that millions of people do means that it does add to their interests.

Case in point, my grandparents who are elderly and cannot drive can now order meals on a delivery app and have it dropped off at their place.

      • Apologies to your grandparents for getting gauged in their wiser years. My grandparents use(d) meals on wheels.

Which, surprise surprise, is a food delivery service.

I'm not getting into the semantics, but the idea that you or I could say that an industry should or should not exist reeks of entitlement and arrogance.

There is no morality in this - a service is provided for a fee, end users decide whether that fee is "worth it" for the service provided. Those who do will buy, those who do not will pass. It may well be that food delivery is not a viable business, or it may well be that it is.

@p1 ama: Call me a cynic but I don't think anything good has come from these middle-people. The less obstacles between my bowels and a local hamburger the better.

            • @King Steuart: I'm glad that you have no obstacles in getting down to a burger joint to get your local hamburger. The fact that you can't get your head around others needing delivery services astounds me.

To those that complained they didn't know early warning signs for Deliveroo, I wouldn't be buying Menulog GCs
Forced redundancies for cost cutting is never a good sign.

    • So good

    • Read this on my google feed today too. I don't have specific Menulog GC (don't think they exist?) but have a few Ultimate Eats cards, better dispose of them sooner rather than later…
