Deliveroo is no more - who is next?

Deliveroo looks to be no more which is a shame as it was my go to option with the mastercard plus deal.

I've been much happier with them over UE and Menulog etc.

Who will be the next one to fall?

I still have credit with Deliveroo 😭. Damn you ShopBack with your 20% off… How many bought up those $100 vouchers for 25% off?

    • +1

I am also in the same boat. What do you think will happen? I have more than a few hundred dollars

Join the Proof of Debt queue and wait….

        • would bank chargeback work?

          • +4

@capslock janitor: Yes most of the time. So do it. The merchant may get upset with you* or some may voluntarily offer you one (Coles/Woolworths tend to do this eventually).

            * so withdraw everything from Shopback first and contemplate you may lose your pendings and have to get creative with your new account details

      • Message from the administrators. We're unsecured creditors… expecting single digit cents in the dollar from history unfortunately.

      $100 vouchers for 25% off

I wonder if that was an early sign on them being desperate and shrugging for cash.

      • +3

Totally, my mum always said if it’s too good to be true…

        • -4

I always told your mum she was too good to be true too!

      • +1

No, its obviously them trying to rip off their customers before closing their business for a cash infusion, otherwise it would not have been a sudden shutdown preventing people from using it in the first place.

    • +5

      It’s not ShopBacks fault

Deliveroo practice has fooled and scam
You can see from previous deals they been trying to get most out of customers before going bust

What would you food delivery users know about jogging? ;)

    In order of failure:

    Menulog;
    Doordash;
    Uber Eats

Still wouldn't hold any funds with either of those companies.

    • As the competition decreases, the remaining ones are going to put their prices up.
Also more drivers to take advantage of = less pay to drivers.

  • +4

Doordash is total garbage in my area. It’ll be a cold day in hell before I open up an account with them again.

    • +1

Doordash food always arrived cold to me anyway!

      • +1

OK provided it is a salad……

    • They are crap but they do have significantly larger financial backing than Menulog. I think Menulog would be the next large one here on the chopping block.

  • +7

    Deliveroo invested in FTX ?

    • Deliverzerooo…

  • +1

When I put in my address deliveroo said I was from a different suburb that's a good 5 minutes drive away. Had about 4 options to choose from that were crap. I couldn't even take advantage of the mastercard offer. I have stopped using all the delivery services since the service fees were added. I'll only bite if its a cash off voucher. I don't see how it's a sustainable business model.

    • Doordash is a pretty big worldwide company. and I think menulog are austrailian? So probably menulog. Their $ off vouchers weren't too bad. But they're not valid to use in WA anymore cause they're off eastern time. Service fees just kill it anyway. If im getting takeaway i'd rather just give cash to restaurants.

      • +4

Menulog was Australian and subsequently purchased by a global food company based in EU called Just Eat Takeaway.

In terms of market share, out of the big 3 players left, Uber is leading, DoorDash is growing really quick and likely 2nd and Menulog is last.

        • i read somewhere that doordash paid their drivers better out of them?

thats why i supported them first; but ubereats offers deals often

          • @capslock janitor: When DD started locally, they were paying drivers very well however as with any business, once you have enough supply (drivers), you ideally should lower pay in order to make more money. This is what is occurring now (comments on Doordash driver groups shows this).

As with all the delivery business under the current pressure on profits, their goal is to cut cost and the biggest cost is driver pay.

      • . If im getting takeaway i'd rather just give cash to restaurants.

i thought a bit about this too, but it's some more dollars for not driving there and waiting for the food to made VS sitting back in leisure and let a driver do all the legwork straight to your door.

        • my pizza shop delivers.

Menulog isn't sustainable with their advertising, I assume at some point they will close simply because the advertising hasn't given them the marketshare they wanted.

    • +10

I would guess the cost of advertising like the Katy Perry ad would be split amongst the countries that use the same ad but change the brand name:

      Just Eat
      Menulog
      Skip

      • Thats a very good point.

      • -2

You can really tell they designed the campaign for Menulog and just kinda hammered Just Eat and Skip in there..

        • +5

MenuLog has, by far, the lowest market share within the company that owns these services.

I doubt they're designing ads to cater to us first, especially when our market potential is also the lowest even if you disregard market share.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it just doesn't seem like that would be what's happening here.

        • +2

I always thought Just Eat was the head brand.

        • +1

          Don't get the negs..
          "Did somebody say ………. Skip?"
Yeah it definitely sounds like the campaign was designed for Skip hey

      • The others sound so bad lol

Last night we ordered Subway with Uber Eats. We only received half the order we paid for. Messaged Uber Eats with pictures and they flat out refused to refund what was missing. Maybe a sign they're in trouble also?

    • +3

      requested refunds before mate?

      • +1

Yes but only when the restaurant doesn't include everything paid for. Been a while though.

        • In that case you need to contact the restaurant directly.

    • +6

Do you have a long history of refunds or something? Usual uber eats are pretty good with customer service and refunds.

      • +1

I've never refunded anything on Uber eats but I did chat with them once. Their chat isn't really Live. You send a message and then they respond a few hours later. Is it Live Now?

        • -1

You send a message and then they respond a few hours later.

Oh, they use the same call centre as Telstra.

    • My KFC UE order arrived with partially missing items and they refunded a small amount, messaged them again and they refunded the whole thing

      • Similar with KFC via Menulog when they forgot a drink. Credited $2 back to bank a/c.

    • +1

You've reached your lifetime refund cap, happens on every platform… once you've reached that limit you won't get any refunds ever unless escalated to a supervisor who can authorise.

      • what's the cap?

        • +2

Not sure about UE but deliveroo and doordash its like 2 refunds

          • @umoddbro: Uh oh I’ve had two partial refunds with DD already

          • +3

@umoddbro: Then your story is … bullshit!

We've had plenty more refunds than that for missing items. Their automated system is really quite good for us.

            • @photonbuddy:

              Their

which service are you referring to?

              • @capslock janitor: Their refunds system. Tell it I had a problem and they issue credits. Most of the time, the refund is actually more than what's needed, so the occasional slightly less refund is acceptable.

Only had to go through to chat once, and it was handled quickly.

We've have very few bad experiences with Doordash.

The worst - and repeated - offence is when Maccas don't put coffee lids on properly, and it spills. That is partly the drivers fault sometimes, though.

      • Happens to me with Uber Eats as I've been using them for a few years now. The food literally didnt turn up at all and they said "oh sorry, we can't refund that this time". Replied back asking what the (profanity), got a supervisor saying "oh they didnt have access to the same tools, I've refunded you". Pretty bad when you have to push them for a refund when nothing turns up.

        • So don't do it.

          These companies are garbage.

      • would be good if they let customers know this in advance, although maybe its in there in the T&C's that most people don't read all of lol

    • -1

Nah man just you. Stop asking for refund 4-5x per week. Refunded few with them and never had a problem nor needing to upload evidences. So yeah, stop abusing the system.

      • It’s easy enough to say someone is abusing the system but I’ve ordered DoorDash probably 5 times in the past month and 3 times it was not what I had ordered, I was missing items, missing ingredients that I’d paid extra for etc.

I contact the store, they blame the drivers, I contact the drivers, they blame the store, i contact DoorDash and they refuse compensation because they believe you’re “abusing the system”. I’ve offered them proof but they just go back to saying “oh well it’s against our policies.”

        • +1

Replying with Uber Eats service. Not sure about DoorDash.

          • @Fredfloresjr: It was an example of how claiming someone is “abusing the system” is not always accurate. It’s not exclusive to one App. They all seem to want to crack down on people abusing the system but the harsh reality is, it’s either the drivers stealing food or the restaurant screwing up.

It shouldn’t fall back on the customer the wear those costs when they’re literally the only innocent party.

        • I contact the store, they blame the drivers, I contact the drivers, they blame the store, i contact DoorDash and they refuse compensation because they believe you’re “abusing the system”.

I've never contacted the store, or the driver. Always use the automated system to get refunds.

I have had to use it a few times when they haven't added the extras I'd paid for - like an extra beef patty on a Maccas burger. I just say I didn't get the burger I ordered, which is technically correct.

          Never been refused.

    • They are all in trouble. You can't make money out of delivering food. Volunteers do this for those who need help.

You can make food and deliver it and make a profit. You can't just be a taxi driver for food. It doesn't work.

The blame avoiding for wrong orders is just … wow.

      • You can't make money out of delivering food.

I just don't get why they can't. They sting the store 30%, sting the customer 10%, and still lose.

I get why Menulog might be struggling, given their high-powered advertising, but don't think I've ever seen a Doordash advert.

    • Same happened to me, just chargeback if it's via PayPal.

You'll win instantly, however you'll get a message on Uber/Eats saying "Oops, there was a problem with your last payment of $X.XX. We'll include it in your next payment." So don't use them again (rideshare or eats) or you'll just pay for it again.

    hello fresh.

    • Hello Fresh absolutely spam advertisements all over the Youtube videos I watch. They must be spending a fortune.

Is receiving a box of ingredients that you then have to cook really that popular? I would have thought the delivery costs would be a killer.

      • Is receiving a box of ingredients that you then have to cook really that popular?

I could be wrong here, but I'm sure I read they don't send cold items, like meat, so if you want to make the meals, you still have to go to the supermarket, and do 3 laps (what a stupid ad!!)

        • Nope they send cold items as well. Just few ingredients suchbas soy sauce, salt and pepper are what you need with you. rest is all packaged.

      • I used them for a fair bit and enjoyed. You get all the ingredients (save but oil, butter, salt and the like) and what's important is the recipe which you follow and get solid results. They tell you how to slice and/or cut, how long to cook etc.

So it's for people like - who want to cook but don't really know well how to and can't be bothered looking up recipes on the internet, roam around the shop to find every ingredient only to get something remotely what you were trying to cook.

I exclusively use Doordash for my food delivery needs and occasionally for grocery delivery as well as for Pickup in special situations as explained below.
Doordacht pickup is Life Hack in situations where there is a line outside restaurants. Restaurants where I've been able to skip long lines thanks to Doordash are Pancakes on the Rocks on a Vivid Night where the line was huge and Anita Gelato in Manly Corso on a random sunny weekend.

    • what did u do then after seeing the line.. placed order to the resto address while youre there, or go home?

Delivery Hero and Foodora, oh wait

  • +2

Pretty sure none of them are making a profit.

Uber's still never posted a profit to this day.

    • +1

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that food delivery will only be profitable as monopoly. I guess 1 down 2 to go.

    Did shopback knew about this?
There were aggressive discount on Deliveroo gift card even till 2-3 days back

All those gift cards are zero value now ?

    • thanks to your comment for consolidating my memory of having skin in that @$100 (+25bonus)

  • Well, all of them eventually. But I think next to go will be DoorDash, then Menulog, then finally Uber Eats.

  • +2

Wow while it doesn't surprise me wasn't expecting it to happen so suddenly. Only created an account to take advantage of the free Deliveroo Plus offer. Still have a bit of credits on my account though, have to assume it's all gone now 😑

    • Wow while it doesn't surprise me wasn't expecting it to happen so suddenly.

Same here :( I have $100 in GCs still unused

Sorry to hear buddy! 😟 Hopefully you can do a chargeback on your card?

Perhaps this is the one time I'm glad I don't have SB account otherwise would've been tempted to buy those discounted GC.

I should use up my UE credits sooner rather than later too…

        • I'll see what happens next :(

I'm rushing to use up my UE credits too

Your username is sadly a good indication of what you can expect back from that.

        • +2

And your username is what we can expect for food delivery companies!

  • +3

    BNPL next?? pls?

    • Why? They get paid with a credit card, so an extra month of interest free. Haven’t paid a cent in fees

      • +4

I do the same, but we're the exact customers that will send them bust as they have to spend money to service us without ever making a profit, not the other way around.

Their long term survival relies on people who pay late.

As soon as the financial regulator forces BNPL to play by the same rules as financial institutions; it'll be a ticking clock for the sector.

        • Enjoy it while we can
