  • So it's not free roaming for a phone call right?

    • +1

Right. As the title says, data roaming.

Edit: Looking at the flexiroam site it does says "International calls via internet so you can call hotel or taxi" on the page of info about the app.

    • Says data, but looking at the flexiroam app description in the App Store says : “NO LIMITS: call local landlines, international & mobile numbers in the app”

No idea if this is a different plan

  • +1

So does this mean that the boingo wifi is ending?

    • +17

Yeah, never got it to work so no loss there

      • +7

Ah bummer, on a handful of airlines including Scoot, EVA and Singapore airlines I was able to use the wifi for free!

Back when the promo first started for free boingo wifi it was good but wasn't that amazing given most airlines charged US$20-30 per flight for unlimited data. Now most have moved to a per MB basis but the boingo is still unlimited. On a recent scoot flight I managed about 1GB of data.

        • Guess it’s changed since I last tried few years ago now, pretty handy to use it during a flight

        • +6

I did 20gb on an Etihad flight, vpn and streamed Netflix & YouTube. About 2 weeks later they sent me an email to say I'd exceeded the fair use policy of 2.1GB and my account was suspended until the next month. Wasn't an issue as my next flight wasn't until then anyway.

          • @vodamerc: I'm so proud of you.

RIP Boingo free in-flight data, one of the best deals ever posted on here.

            • @Reveen:

RIP Boingo free in-flight data, one of the best deals ever posted on here.

I wonder if it got pulled because of high-volume users that the system was not designed for.

          • +1

@vodamerc: "I bypassed the throttling on aircraft wifi and ruined the experience for everyone else".

            You might be "TA".

            • +1

@Zorlin: There was no throttling, that took 2 weeks to happen. The vpn was for access restrictions. Originally all I needed to do was make some voip phone calls but soon after discovered Netflix worked just fine…

I was more considerate on my flight home after being informed of the acceptable use policy. However I wouldn’t call 2.1GB a month ‘unlimited’.

              • +1

@vodamerc: Fine, you bypassed access restrictions which you quite reasonably could have guessed were in place for a reason.

Which normally I'd be completely in favour of … were it not a shared scarce resource.

    • I'd like to know this too. Is this from an email that some members have received? Nothing received for me yet. What happens after you've used your 1 lot of 3GB / 15 days?

      • got email today from 28deg, guess more details how the 15day package works once it starts 1/1/23

        • +2

Seems to be you get 3GB/15 days each calendar year, looking at the FAQ.

A bit paltry in my opinion.

          • +2

@constipated: If that’s the case pretty crap, but would wait for more details from 28deg

      • This may help answer your question . Need to buy the data plan with 15% discount since it’s once per calendar year unless if you travel end of Dec and early January

Eligible Cardholders receive one complimentary data plan upon redemption.

Should You wish to purchase additional data plans, they will be subject to additional respective prices. Flexiroam shall provide a 15% discount on all data plans to all eligible Cardholders. The discount will be applied during payment with an eligible Card through the FLEXIROAM X App.

In the event where Flexiroam offers a higher discount in any of their direct In-House promotions, then the Cardholders shall be entitled to receive the higher value promotion of the two by entering a promotional code to be provided by Flexiroam.

  • Not compatible with pixel devices purchased in Australia

Any other way for pixel owners?

    • Sounds odd because I've used flexiroam before with a Pixel 3a purchased in Australia.

    • Use a physical sim. But not sure why a esim wouldn't work on a Pixel and just in Australia at that.

      • We just came back from an overseas trip and I can confirm we used flexiroam esim on both pixel 6 and pixel 6 pro.

  • +2

Prices are pretty expensive. You're probably better off with a travel eSIM.

    • +1

no cost for 28deg customers, 15 days 3gb free, not sure after 15days if you can start again, if not look at other options then

      • +1

Says in the FAQ: Cardholders are entitled to 1 redemption per eligible card, per calendar year.

    • +1

Isn't the deal a free 3gb data plan for 15 days, how is it expensive?

Also from the site, it doesn't look its exclusive to 28 degrees. Other mastercard holder can potentially get it as well.

  • 3GB free data. Global data valid for 15 days from your chosen start date.

Does this mean free 3GB/15 days maximum or free but have to reactivate every trip and only lasts 15 days?

    • +1

Its a free 15 day 3gb data plan for Mastercard holders. Subsequent plans are 15% off.

    • +2

      Once per calender year

  • cannot see S22 series as compatible with eSim option

  • -1

Free global warming I read lol

  • +1

Damn, I managed to use 20gb on a Etihad flight to Abu Dhabi streaming Netflix using free boingo wifi.
Going to suck having to pay for crap limits on board again :(

    • +1

Wouldn’t delete the app maybe you’ll still have access

      • +2

This is all very funny as I've got Boingo WiFi to work on my flight now. Currently on Cathay pacific and just choose roaming tab and hey prestro free inflight WiFi.

        • do they still make you wear masks in flight?

        • I know its been a long time but quick question, was the boingo wifi you used on a350 or 777? Cheers!

          • @vodamerc: I had all a350s on my trip. One wasn't working, but others were fine (4 legs)

    • It used to work on more than one device back in the day as well so I would be online via phone and tablet while everyone else was stuck watching lame in-flight entertainment.

      This change is terrible news.

  • +2

Will be missing boingo that I was able to use it on some airlines that supports it

  • The 28 degrees website make no mention of this yet and i haven't received an email about it:
The https://www.28degreescard.com.au/ site still refers to "Free Global Wi-Fi".
    Will wait and see…

  • +1

I know what a SIM card and eSim is but what is a microchip?

    • +2

Some sort of dual SIM hack by the sounds of it. The chip is on a sticker that attaches to the SIM card. Unlike your typical dual SIM dual standby phone you will need to select which SIM is enabled for calls and texts. I guess these things work for some people and are problematic for others.

  • 3GB free for 15 days once a year is quite a deal. 28 degrees finally making up for all the features they've withdrawn, and all the fees they've added, over the years?

  • +1

I usually travel for 3 weeks at a time. 15 days is a dealbreaker.

    • +3

Covers 15 days out of 21 days that you would've presumably otherwise had to find an alternative for anyway though?

    • +2

How can this be a deal breaker when it's free to begin with. lol

      • because i'll be buying 3-week sim regardless anyway. there's no 1-week sim

  • Good intentions, in practice a bit of a dog!

  • Thanks OP. Want to ask the users here if they still offer price protection on purchases?

    • +2

They do Only if you have it activated from the past

      • +1

        Thank you

  • How do we get the simcard.?

  • No more free data 😉

  • +5

For me this is a net negative. For anyone who travels a bit, the boingo access is a massive cost saving. Having fast free wifi inflight on many airlines is such a good benefit.

Flexiroam is ok, but it is extremely expensive compared to airalo. So much so that you’d never use it unless you got one of their 70 or 80% discounts that they regularly have. Even then it’s expensive. So the 15% discount they’re offering is a dog of an offer.

The free 3gb sounds great! Until you realise that it only applies once per year.

Sad to see the boingo go, but will take the 3gb esim anyway.

    • +1

Yeah, I have only ever bought Flexiroam local data, and only when it was on 70 to 80% discount, when it was usually US $1 to $2 per GB (depending on the country).

Example Flexiroam local data purchases from 2019:
      South Korea 1GB - 3 Days for $USD 1.92 - rate per GB: $1.92
      France 3GB - 8 Days - USD $3.60 - rate per GB: $1.20
      Italy 10GB - 24 Days - USD $8.64 - rate per GB: $0.86
      Germany 1GB - 8 Days - USD $2.40 - rate per GB: $2.40
      United Kingdom 3GB - 8 Days - USD $3.84 - rate per GB: $0.80
      United States 7GB - 24 Days - USD $12.48 - rate per GB: $1.78
      Hong Kong 1GB - 8 Days - USD $3.60 - rate per GB: $3.60

Honestly, Flexiroam should make their 70 to 80% off prices their standard prices, I think it would lead to far more sales.

Airalo's listed prices do seem roughly 50% higher than these prices, but it might be hard to compare pre-covid and current prices for travel-SIMS, and it looks like a reasonable standard price without any games playing with discount & codes.

Unfortunately Airalo are eSIM-only, which doesn't do me much good without an eSIM phone - there are hardly any china-droid phones on the list of supported devices: https://www.airalo.com/help/about-airalo/what-devices-suppor…

      • If your (Android) phone is compatible with the eSIM.me eUICC adapter (ignore the spurious phone model specific pages on their web site and check compatibility with their app) then you can provision eSIMs from any provider that provides a QR code for eSIM provisioning rather than doing through their own app, and doesn't restrict eSIMs to models they deem compatible. If your phone takes a custom ROM it might be possible to make it work from provider apps due to work on an open source alternative to Google's SIM manager but its an open question whether this would work with the eSIM.me card. For further information about that and the eSIM.me take a look at this article.

One interesting feature is that once the eUICC card is provisioned on one device the eSIM.me card can be transferred to another device just like a normal SIM.

BTW, I notice the eSIM.me is offering 3 adapters for the price of 2 for black friday.

Sadly, the app said my China-droid is missing the necessary API not that I was going to buy one until I needed one at the prices they charge,

  • +2

Losing 350 days a year is no deal.

  • +2

have added Boingo mastercard eligibility check to post, can check any Mastercard eligibility, suggest signing up if you are 28deg eligible before the 1st Jan, incase access is not revoked but you cant sign up after that date

    • +1

My Citibank prestige with 'World Elite' mark on it not eligible lol

  • is it 3 GB 15 days per year? is it a calendar year or a financial year or any 365 days before? It looks like no full terms and conditions any where.

  • +2

Is additional card eligible for the offer too ? Thinking one sim for me for first 15 days then the next 15 days for my wife

  • Don't forget to use referral code for additional 200MB for both

  • +1

As someone who travels a lot, I find buying local SIMs way cheaper and less hassle.

    • +1

It's definitely cheaper, but how is it less hassle? With Flexiroam (or airalo) you just open the app and buy the amount of data you need. The moment the plane touches down you're online.

With local sims you have to go to a kiosk or store, possibly wait in line if you're at an airport kiosk and everyone else wants a sim too, show your passport in some countries, and register the new eSIM or swap your physical SIM. That's a lot more hassle than just tapping a few buttons in an app.

    • buying local SIMs way cheaper and less hassle

How does this work in practice ?
Surely none of your SMS authentication codes come through (because you have a new number) and nobody can call you (because you have a new number) ?
I can't imagine travelling without roaming on my own phone number 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • If people know you are overseas, it often easier to call using whatsapp, viber, facetime, Google Duo etc

      • +1

Dual SIM phones or another phone are the way to receive SMSs. As for receiving calls a true OzBargainer just doesn't answer those to avoid paying roaming charges or at least has a roaming deal so cheap they don't need to worry about buying a local SIM.

  • +1

I can see hsbc hk also have offered similar 3gb for 10 days (shorter period)
    https://www.hsbc.com.hk/credit-cards/products/premier-master…
So if it’s available on other eligible mc cards, this can be claimed on the same flexiroam account as mentioned on the t&c

  • +1

I was able to use it just yesterday already while I was transiting in Singapore.

  • +1

Can confirm boingo works on china airlines flights (the taiwan airlines not china)

  • I applied the sim card almost straight away when I saw this and got one for free. Then I applied for another one using by registering another account and check the eligibility for my additional card, it was eligible but I need to pay for postage US $9.90. I whatsapp their customer service and advised that they are escalating the issue as it shouldn't charge the postage. Few days later I retried, and the card is now not eligible., thus I whatsapp them again. They said Australian Mastercard is not eligible for the program. WTF ?!? I gave them the screenshot from 28degrees email etc and ask them for explanation why I got one free one with my other card and why 5 days ago, it says my second card is eligible and now is not. They keep arguing that Australian one is not eligible, blah blah blah.
And finally they said they will investigate the issue and will get back to me within 1-2 days (don't think they will as past experience).

Does anyone has similar issue ?

    • +1

The 28deg offer doesn’t start until 1st Jan 223 lol

    • +1

No problems here, got mine setup and working currently in Honolulu. I used my 28 degrees card for this offer so it is definitely working.

      • The free version, not 15% off

        • +1

Yes, the flexiroam app is showing that I have 2.71GB and 4 days left on the 3GB 15 days plan.

  • Anyone know if your supplementary card holder can also get the Deal? Meaning that you could both have 3GB each? Or maybe its only once for the actual account?

    • +2

I've redeemed one on my card and one on my wife's supplementary card.

      • Me too

  • So, looks like the 3GB is available now? We don’t have to wait until 1 January?

    • I got them once it started the ads

  • My 28 Degrees card was showing as eligible a few days ago but now it's not. Not sure if it's something to do with the server.

  • +1

My supplementary card works few days ago, now trying to install on another phone with primary card, does not work… strange..

  • +1

Trying to check my card and my account number for eligibility. But none of it eligible.
Works on other 28 degrees benefits.

  • I am in the same boat. Both primary and additional holder cards worked a few days ago but none of them works now. Contacted 28 chat but they had no idea what I was telling.

  • Has anyone actually gotten this to work with 28 degrees? Just tried today and card still not eligible.

    • +2

Contacted Mastercard and they said the offer is valid from Jan 1 in UTC so give another go in two hours.

    • Just did an esim and loaded it up for trip, seems good

  • My 28 Degrees card is eligible on check, then get message offering me to redeem offer. If I do, does 15days start immediately, or do I then get choice of when to start?

    • Read the post till the end

    • U get to decide when it start

  • Hi everyone. I can’t see the mastercard banner on the flexiroam app. Can anyone help thanks

    • Try kill the app or try log out and log back in

    • You need to log in (or sign up) . You will see it then .

  • Good for short trips I suppose

  • Well I was trying to do the right thing and as it recommend if I only have single sim slot, I ordered the microchip starter pack. Now I just realised it’s a sim sticker on top of our regular local sim.
Anything for me to worry using this sticker?

    • Not really, I have it for the last 3 years. Works pretty well with the app

  • Anyone know if flexishare available on this plan?
Since me and my wife have 28 degrees and if this feature is available, I am thinking to activate each of our plan one at a time and use the flexishare
