  • How does a cable determine how fast you can charge?

    • +5

USB C cables need to know what protocol to charge at, so theres IC chips inside that detect the voltage and then use an ammeter to find current… P = V x I

      • still need the right charger though

        • Are these always accurate? I bought one and was surprised to see very low watts of 9-17W for my Pixel 6 Pro with a fast charger (Baseus with PD, 100W). I know the phone changes its draw for battery health, but it did make me wonder how reliable the readings are on this.

  • oops missed

    • same here

      • Same. Damn, that'll teach me to work late!

Would've seen this at on one of my many routine Ozb checks at exactly 5:35 (SA time) on a weekday.

If it makes you feel any better, the BOGOF doesn't work.

  • Best quality USB-C (to USB-C) cables I've bought on Amazon are the Unitek brand ones. Cheap and reliable.

I have both the A-to-C and C-to-C versions. Note that the A-to-C versions will always have the display lit, even when nothing is plugged into it. The C-to-C version only lights up when something is drawing power through it.

They are quite bright so probably not great to use it in the bedroom while sleeping.

  • missed, got any similar aliexpress deals?

  • This doesn't fit into my Pixel 6 Pro with the Peak Design case on.

I bought a few of the USB-C to USB-C versions of these cables (not these USB-A to USB-C ones) for my devices and they ended up working fine only for a few months or so.

1 of my 6 or so cables decided to stop charging my phone and the LED lights stopped working. The cable started heating up rapidly to the point of smoking and eventually melted part of my plastic phone case and possibly even damaged my USB-C port. The cable end, my phone's USB-C port, and my phone case all still smell like burnt plastic to this day.

My other cables still work fine, but I decided to throw them out because of how dangerous they are. Make sure to read the one-star reviews on amazon for these cables as plenty of other reviewers have experienced the same problem.

What I found especially dodgy was how the product page for the cables was taken down for a while and then later put back up with the reviews reset.
