  • How would this compare to the ozbargain go to monitor the 34inch Xiaomi?

    • I'm unsure, but I'm curious as well.

    • +1

At a quick glance it looks like this monitor has HDR which the Xiaomi doesn't have, it's also a IPS screen which is considered better than VA.

One thing it doesn't mention is freesync, but it does talk about adaptive sync

I think it's best to ignore the HDR gimmick as the monitor's peak brightness is 300 nits which isn't effective at all for HDR.

Also: *U34G3X has been upgraded to AMD Freesync Premium version since June.1.2021 (manufactured date) (https://au.aoc.com/product/U34G3X)

Honestly, the biggest difference are the panels (IPS versus VA). Either one does some things better than the other. Best to research the difference against what you're using it for, or just get whatever's cheaper.

        Cheers.

    • the xiaomi's an ancient and now relatively slow panel. Go for the dell or kogan which have both come down in price.

      • Which is better to get….This or those monitors?

        • As erifyx said… it really comes down to whether you want IPS or VA, and flat or curved. IMO for the majority of people without specific media production needs, curved VA is the better choice at this size.

          • @xrailgun: "without specific media production needs"

Only current gen VA (literally just Samsung's G7 & up afaik) is considered decent for gaming though - the dark level smearing is rather distracting..

Even on the desktop too, if one chooses to use a really dark theme with smooth scrolling.

            • @eepykate: that's why I recommended the latest dell/kogan panels. I use the kogan myself and the dark smearing is the least I've ever seen from a VA, noticeably less than a Dell S2722DGM's, which is also rated for 165 hz.

              • @xrailgun: Not sure about the Kogan but the dell one does have notable smearing

For reference: this is what the g7's looks like

                • +1

@eepykate: The S2722DGM seems to have smearing closer to the g7's.

However, ozb brigade downvotes kogan without second thought. Dell's the local favourite. If I didn't mention both in the first reply, nobody would've cared.

                  • @xrailgun:

The S2722DGM seems to have smearing closer to the g7's.

Interesting, I could have sworn the images showed it to be notably worse - While the G7 is still better in those images, (mainly the stand of the 120hz images), it's not by much as I thought - even though they're both quite minor.
I would expect the differences to be more significant with a generally darker image (judging by the rise/fall times being half as bad) - for example apart from the dark mode smooth scrolling I mentioned, I find my S2722DGM's dark-level smearing super noticeable when looking at mushrooms in fortnite (especially at night in-game).

Edit: Just realized it's ambiguous, I do not have a G7 - mostly just operating on word of mouth.

Can't find any reviews and it's over a year old
