Is It Awkward to Check Prices and Leave Shop/Restaurant?

When going out to shops and for lunch, is It awkward to check the menu and then leave.

There's no price or pictures or anything outside except going in to have a look and then leave.

How do fellow OzBargainers check the menu/ price of shops without walking out awkwardly

    Google Maps photos.

    UberEats app menu.

    Official websites for restaurants.

Looking at dishes on other patrons tables.

Nothing wrong with looking at a menu and deciding it's not for you and/or doesn't suit your dietary requirements. Many lunch places put a menu near the front doors for that very reason.

    Which restaurant?

If you do not feel comfortable then leave, better than staying and regretting your terrible food.

Whenever I get that feeling of awkwardness, I remember that it's my hard earned money and I ain't giving it to nobody because I feel slightly awkward.

Dont walk in if there is no menu on display
Or if you walk in ask for a menu before being shown a seat.

Exactly, I’ve done it’s heaps of times

      Ask to see a menu
      Haven’t liked what I’ve seen
Said “thanks but I think we’ll go somewhere else” and left

      Never had an issue

It's only awkward if you think it is. If the shop wants to prevent this, they'll display the menu outside like many other restaurants do.

You - Hi, could I please have a look at a menu before I sit down, I have dietary requirements.
Staff - Oh that’s fine, here you go. What are your dietary requirements, I may be able to assist?
    You - I’m a tight arse.
Staff - Oh, you’re one of those OzBargainers.

    • You - Yeah, I'm Queenie Mapax, follow me more for tips.

Who cares. Why would I care what some random working at a restaurant thinks of me? I walk in and read the menu like a normal person, then walk out if I don't want it.

I would imagine 99% of hospo staff couldn't care less and this would happen regularly.
If I don't know what I want to eat, I'll wander in and out of half a dozen places looking at menus before deciding.

    No biggie.

  • It's not awkward to walk in just to check a menu.

I do this all the time. I like to order large coffees from cafes, if they only have smaller size cups I'll immediately walk out. Not awkward at all as I am unlikely to see any of them again and if someone asks me why I'd be happy to explain that their shitty selection of sizes was the reason.

One of the things that really bugs me is that a restaurant would have a Facebook page, but no menu or prices. Google maps also doesn't have the menu or it's outdated.

  • Me all the time. Don't worry, no one cares

Well if you think about it you're probably not the only one who does what you've mentioned as well as the fact that shop staff interact with many people in a day maybe even hundreds depending on the store and they will likely forget what you did in 5 minutes if they even care to observe and internalise what you did.

I do it all the time.
